## **Chair’s Report**

Another year of growth and development. 2023-24 was another successful year in which Brixton Wings continued to grow and to reach out to more children, young people, and families. We achieved very positive outcomes, albeit in an environment that remained challenging, both from a funding and resources perspective. However, our heartfelt thanks must go to our funders for the year, without whom we would not be able to provide the high-quality classes and activities we present, not least to Lambeth and the DfE for funding our Holiday Activities (HAP), to the National Grid for funding our Saturday School STEM and chess club, to the Leather-sellers Foundation for supporting our weekly coding and music classes. We thank our long-time and fully supportive partners, most especially Lambeth Sports, Lambeth Sounds and LMS, London Youth Rowing and Leebra productions, and most especially we thank all our supporters, session teachers, volunteers, donors, and others who have contributed so much. The need for our services and after School support has never been higher and the nature of those needs, we are seeing are ever more complex.

As ever, our dedicated team of trustees, teachers, inspiring volunteers, and parents are fully committed to ensuring we provide the best possible learning and skills development environment for disadvantaged and underrepresented young people living in the Angell Town and surrounding estates in Brixton. Through their support we continue to provide resources and facilities for Early Intervention and prevention Programs, including weekly after-School group music lessons, a comprehensive Saturday school, and an array of weekly and mid-term sports and digital technology VR and AR activities.

Since becoming a registered grassroots charity in 2016, our focus remains in the delivery of individual and group learning and development activities from our Brixton Wings Centre, along with partnering with other organizations such as London Youth Rowing (LYR), Ebony Horse Club, School Ground Sound Sounds (Grounded Sounds), the National Theatre, Lambeth Sounds, Electechlabs, and Millennium Community Solutions. Our centre is specifically designed to facilitate group classroom activities with an array of musical instruments, from two classical baby-grand piano, three electric baby-grands, a host of electric keyboards/guitars, acoustic guitars, amps, and drums, to music workbooks and music production equipment.

Our Saturday School continues to flourish and supports students in their pathway from primary to Secondary School or in preparation for their GCSE or A level exams. This year also introduced the start of our Assistant Teachers mentoring programs, where accredited students who participated in our music or rowing classes graduated to becoming assistant teachers for our After School music, coding or rowing sessions. We are particularly proud of those who won sports medals or music awards this year, most especially our Indoor Rowing London Youth Games, gold medalist, Duvar, who was presented an award for Lambeth’s Individual sports person of the year 2024, by the mayor of Lambeth. We are equally so proud of our ABRSM grade 5 music graduates, Natalie and Meso, who now share their skills and experiences in the classroom with the younger children, so they too can aspire to setting and achieving their own goals and learning pathways.

This year we worked closely with other local community groups and between us, set up Angell Town Collective (AT Collective). A collective of local groups and individual activists whose aim and objective is to increase local community resilience by way of increased access to assets and resources. We have continued to work closely with Lambeth VCS Asset management and hope that over the coming year we can collectively ensure a greater focus is placed on supporting up and coming individuals and groups who wish to run projects and events in a ‘meanwhile’ dedicated space for local people and the wider community.

We are also working and collaborating within First5Lambeth, a consortium of local groups whose aim over the coming year is to advance opportunities and provisions for the Under 5-Year-olds and their families in Lambeth.

We continue to seek funding to sustain both our projects and our organization – and have been successful in 2023/24 to have been awarded funding by the following funders, for whom we are immensely grateful, including Lambeth Council, Leather-sellers, National Grid, and our ongoing partners.

The Chair and trustees wish to acknowledge and thank all of the above funders and partners without whom we would not be able to continue to provide the resources and facilities we do.

Thank you!

Lil Sullivan,

Chair, Brixton Wings
