## OUR FOCUS FOR 2022 

One more year, it’s been so exciting to see our projects continue to grow and have such a positive impact on the Indian communities we work with. 

We started 2022 with a clear vision of what we wanted to achieve. Over the last few years, we had been testing different projects and, while they all reached their outcomes, the two that stood out in terms of reach and change have doubtlessly been our IT Centres and the Sponsorship Programme for female university students. 


Having worked closely with rural communities in South India, getting their views and feedback, having shared so many experiences and hopes, something that remains clear for all of us is that quality education for everyone should be at the core of all our efforts. 

We agree with our communities that education is not the challenge anymore; the real challenge is how to improve its standards, such as access to quality educational resources, online material and equal access to further education. So this is what we’ve continued to do this year. 



We have improved the standards of our IT facilities and increased the support to our university students so they can build on what they already have and make it better, increasing young people’s chances to succeed in life, in whatever it is they set off to do, because they are the ones who can truly change their own future, therefore the future of their communities. We are so proud of their achievements and so grateful to all those who have helped along the way.

## THEORY OF CHANGE 

We envisage a world where everyone has access to quality education. 

We have set out to bridge the gap between the urban and rural areas of South India, thus helping to create a fairer society with equal opportunities for everyone. 

**Rural schools have inadequate student to teacher ratios, insufficient teaching resources, and no IT facilities, meaning that children often fall behind in their learning and struggle when they start attending higher education.** 




We have set out to improve children’s digital skills and educational levels by creating 3 IT centres for students in the villages of Kanjanur, Thandarai Pettai and Chitiraikoodam in rural Tamil Nadu. 

**There are also high rates of female students dropping out from higher education, as parents will often prioritise their sons’ studies over their daughters’.** We support girls’ access to further education by providing a Student Sponsorship Programme for female students. The Programme covers course fees, transport to university and free access to a personal development and careers advice scheme.

## **ANNA, Founder** 

Indian Futures is the result of a never-ending hope and firm belief in the power of quality education and the work that charities do in India. 

I am thrilled to have opened the path to this exciting adventure to support such a special and magical place in the world, to which I will always be connected. 

## **GILLY, Trustee** 

For many years I have worked in different organisations supporting vulnerable people of all ages. I enjoy being a trustee for Indian Futures and love organising events and coming up with creative fundraising ideas - with help from my 13-year-old son Malachy. 


## **ALANNA, Trustee** 

I am retired but actively involved in my local community. I enjoy fundraising for Indian Futures as I believe in its values and aims and want more people know about our work. 

## **SUSHMA, Trustee** 

Indian Futures helps rural communities in South India become self-sufficient by enhancing educational facilities, building community centres and undertaking various outreach programmes. 

I particularly enjoy seeing how our female uni students are developing and becoming more confident over time. 




## **NAMRITA, Volunteer** 

I have always held it to be true that “education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world” (Nelson Mandela). So I feel all the more privileged to contribute to and be part of that vision through the valuable work of Indian Futures. 

## **KANE, Volunteer** 

I studied Geography and International Development at Sussex University. I understand my privileges which is why I hope to use them for good - Indian Futures is a great way for me to volunteer to help be a part of changing some peoples lives, through empowerment and education but with themselves in the driving seat. 


## **HANNA, Volunteer** 

Those who suffer marginalisation have always sparked my interest in the need for better development to ‘leave no one behind’. My experience working with the marginalised population led me to seek the causes of poverty and find sustainable solutions. 

## **HARRIET, Volunteer** 

I am a student at the University of Sussex studying International Development and Arabic. I started volunteering for Indian Futures in 2021, helping to develop and write their policies. Most recently, I’ve been involved in trust fundraising, writing proposals for funding. It has been very insightful to look into this new area and learn about how international development projects are planned and delivered. 



OUR TEAMS - TEAM SPAIN 


## **ROGER, Project Coordinator** 

In 2008 I joined Anna in Vedanthangal to work on the educational project as a volunteer for 6 months. This experience helped me reflect on and come to terms with deprivation, unfairness, a sense of resignation and the importance of education as a very good way to fight them all. 

## **ANGIE, Volunteer** 

I love the idea of organising different activities and events to raise money to help young girls from a rural area in South India to have education. It is a way of helping with simple actions that are close to everybody. During the last four years I have met amazing people and I have loved every second of this experience. 


## **CRISTIAN, Volunteer** 

I love to create activities, attractive themes, and to participate. I am very demanding in everything I do so I always make sure that everything runs smoothly. I am very happy to have joined the project because of the people I have met and the bonds have created with them. 

## **LUCÍA, Volunteer** 

I recently graduated from the University of Sussex studying International Relations and Development Studies. Working as a volunteer for Indian Futures has enabled me to put my new knowledge and skills to work by contributing to the formulation of their policies and helping write funding bids. I am very much looking forward to the work that lies ahead as part of the  team! 



OUR TEAMS - TEAM INDIA 


## **PRITHIVIRAJ, IT Teacher** 

I am the IT teacher of the two IT Centres run by Indian Futures in the area of Vedanthangal. I was a student at one of Laia Foundation’s after-school centres and, after studying Mechanical Engineering, I decided to develop a career as a teacher. I am most proud of being part of the Indian Futures project and thankful for this opportunity. 

## **KALPANA, Sponsorship Programme Coordinator** 

I was a student of Laia Foundation and, when I finished compulsory education, I studied Banking Management at university. Now I work as a part-time teacher for Laia Foundation and am the Sponsorship Programme Coordinator for Indian Futures. I very much enjoy helping young women have the same opportunities as me and supporting them in their university years. 


## **YUVARAJ, Laia Foundation Office Manager** 

I have been part of the Laia Foundation’s team very much since it was set up in 2005, first as a teacher in one of their centres then as a supervisor, and most recently as the office manager. In my job, I liaise weekly with Indian Futures staff and help deliver the projects in Vedanthangal. It has been so good to see all the changes thanks to the work we do. 



## OUR PROJECTS IN INDIA 

## The Student Sponsorship Programme 

In June 2022, we recruited our Sponsorship Coordinator, Kalpana, who has been crucial to the development of our sponsorship programme on the ground. She’s the go-to person for all the students we sponsor and also the one who keeps Indian Futures informed on the progress of the project. 

Kalpana is from Vinayaganallur (‘the Land of Ganesh’), a little village in the area of Vedanthangal. She has been working as an after-school teacher for many years. Her knowledge of the area and, most importantly, its people, and vast experience in the provision of quality education in rural Tamil Nadu, makes her a great asset for the organisation. 




## The Indian Futures - Accenture Partnership 

Since late 2021, Indian Futures has been in constant dialogue with Accenture Chennai. Through a number of online meetings, Anna, Founder of Indian Futures, and Geetha Radhakrishnan, Accenture Growth Market Pricing Architect Lead, exchanged their views on women's access to further education and some of the difficulties the women from our Sponsorship Programme were facing. 

**The Mentoring responds to the needs the students had highlighted and supports them in further development in order to gain additional skills whilst studying.** The programme is divided into 4 modules: Tactical English Speaking, Personal Development, IT and CV Writing, and Careers Advice. 




## The IT Community Centres 

Young students in India are eager to learn IT but unfortunately, many of them live in rural areas where IT access is not available. Without IT proficiency, none of these students will be able to find a job in the future. To help solve this issue, Indian Futures has created 3 IT Centres and provides IT training and mentoring to young students. 


## **The goals of the IT Centres are to:** 

**Develop more varied and stimulating ways of learning, thus expanding quality education in the area** 

**Increase young people's chances to find a job in the future Reduce the digital gap between rural and urban** 

**areas** 




2 IT teachers from the local area were recruited and received training on how to deliver IT lessons. In order to reach out to more students, in the school year 2022/23, our IT teachers decided to create a 3-monthly programme which has tripled the number of students with access to IT tools per year. **We're now in the process of raising funds to be able to expand our IT Centres so more and more young people can confidently enter the job market. We would also like to open the IT Centres to the entire community, young and old.** 



## The Tailoring Project 



**The Tailoring Project started as a family enterprise. In order to increase the family’s income - that had been badly impacted by the pandemic - and help Indian Futures, the women of one of the local families came up with the idea of making bags and aprons that we would then sell in Spain and the UK.** Throughout 2022, the items were sold at markets and festivals in Barcelona and Brighton. The project provides economical independence to the women while also being self-sustainable i.e. with the funds raised from the sales, we cover the tailors' salaries, and material and funding for other Indian Futures' projects. 



## HOW WE'VE ACHIEVED THIS 

## Souter CT 

Souter Charitable Trust supports projects for the relief of human suffering in the UK and overseas. In March 2022, Souter CT confirmed a £2,849 donation to cover the entire expenses of running the IT Centres for one year. Thanks to this donation, we’ve been able to pay the teachers’ salaries, their training, the internet connection of the centres and some much needed computer repairs. From Indian Futures, we want to send a big thank you to the Trustees of Souter CT for their commitment towards the digitalisation of rural Tamil Nadu. 




## Brunswick Festival 

We were back at Brunswick Festival in Brighton to fundraise and spread the word of Indian Futures. The yearly festival is run by local volunteers and brings together local businesses and charities. We thoroughly enjoyed being part of the vibrant festival which offers a range of diverse stalls, live music and activities! 


Through sales of traditional Indian items, a lucky dip and a donations box, the Indian Futures stall raised a total of £300. 



## Raising Awareness in Schools and 

## Universities 


In October, Anna and Roger, Indian Futures Project Coordinator in Spain, attended Maristes La Immaculada School in Barcelona to speak to the Year 9 Students during their Solidarity Week, in which they choose a charity to collaborate with. 

**The presentation raised awareness on the difficulties women and children have accessing quality education in rural India and the projects Indian Futures runs to help improve the inequalities.** The students were very engaged and wanted to support Indian Futures through fundraising events, social media promotion and communication with students in India. 



## Christmas and Sant Jordi in Spain 

The Futuraula Committee, students at Euroaula University School of Tourism, has organised a number of great events over the last year to raise funds for the Sponsorship Programme. 


They rounded 2022 off with a Christmas Breakfast, one of several activities at the university to continue to raise funds for the Sponsorship Programme. The festivities ended with a raffle for 10 very exciting prizes, from a tattoo to sushi restaurant vouchers. 


For Sant Jordi, a big festival day in Catalonia, they made beautiful rose cupcakes to sell on a street market to passersby, along with items from the Tailoring Project and fresh roses. The students had lots of fun and their efforts raised a total of 955€.

## FUTURE GOALS 

**Our overall goal is to expand and improve our IT Community Centres and Sponsorship Programme** 

**What are the challenges ahead?** The costs of both projects are currently covered. However, if we want to expand, we are going to need extra funding. Besides, in order to succeed, we cannot focus solely on funding but we also need trained staff in the area and external advice so the projects can be run efficiently. 



**How are we going to overcome these challenges?** We are proud to count on the help of two trust fundraiser volunteers, Harriet and Lucía, who have been helping us since 2021. 

We are confident that, with their help, we will be able to tap into undiscovered pots of funding that can bring about the changes that we seek. 



Also, for this 2023, we have a number of fundraising events in store: another spoken word and music event (brought to us by our trustee and artist Alanna), the photography exhibition ‘Memories of an Indian Future’ (in collaboration with Brighton charity Bhopal Medical Appeal), summer festivals Patchfest and Brunswick and new activities at Manor Road Gym. 

In India, we are strengthening our links with Accenture Chennai’s staff who are currently providing support to our sponsored students. We believe that these links are paramount for our projects to continue to develop, in terms of guidance, recruitment, induction and training of the new staff. 


With their help and that of our fantastic staff on the ground and volunteers in the UK and Spain, our plans for growth in 2023 will become a reality and our projects will bring even greater impact to our communities.
