## **3.3 Report on the proceedings of the PCC**

## **PCC Report for the APCM**

**PCC Meetings:** Several issues discussed by the PCC and decisions taken will be covered in other reports.

Yvonne Hellewell and Rita Morse were re-elected to the PCC, and there is a vacancy. In January 2025 Pauline Dodd resigned, resulting in two vacancies. We are grateful to Pauline for her service as a PCC member.

**Revd James Gould:** In June Rev James was ordained as deacon and appointed to serve his curacy at St Francis’ and St Leonard’s churches. A bring and share lunch was held on James’ first Sunday at St Francis’ to welcome him and his family.

**Church Services:** In May 2024 the Family service on the afternoon of the first Sunday of each month began. In December the Christingle service was held as part of the family orientated worship.

As in previous years the church hosted members of Bramley community to refreshments in church, following the annual Act of Remembrance organised by Bramley Parish Council. We welcomed representatives of the Parish Council, British Legion and the uniformed organizations to the church service preceding the Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial in Cross Street. The PCC agreed that the collection from this service should be donated to The Royal British Legion (national).

St Francis’ welcomed local schools to church for informal visits and, also to their Harvest and Carol services.

**Safeguarding:** Members of the PCC have undertaken further safeguarding training to ensure that our church is a safe environment for everyone who come to our services and church activities.

**Sound and Visual Systems:** Improving the sound system has been a priority for the PCC and we are indebted to Chris Leverton for his hard work in moving this forward. It is taking a long time, but the PCC recognised that it is important to get the right advice on equipment that is appropriate to meet our needs and is value for money.

**Painting of the Church and Church Hall:** Repainting of the church and hall has been completed and our grateful thanks to John Greaves who did so much of the painting in both church and hall. The ceilings were painted by a painting and decorating contractor.

At the time of preparing this report there are still some areas (back room, toilets etc) that need painting, but John is waiting for warmer weather for this to begin. Volunteers will be invited to join a working party to assist with the painting.

**Community Support:** Members of St Francis’ church have continued to support Sunnyside Supplies with regular non-perishable food gifts. The PCC agreed to let Friends in Harmony Community Choir hold a concert in church in June 2024 and proceeds from the concert were in aid of Sunnyside Supplies.

Thank you to all members of our church family who gave their time to provide refreshments, acted as parking stewards and attended the concert which was a great success. The PCC agreed to waive the fees for the hall.

The minutes of the PCC are displayed in the church hall for all members of the church to read once they have been approved by the PCC. Any member of the church can

6

request the PCC to consider any matter they wish to raise, by speaking to a member of the PCC.

## **Irene Magill PCC Secretary**

## **3.4 PRIEST** IN CHARGE REPORT

The past 12 months have given us much cause to be thankful, there are shoots of growth both new and from existing branches.

New shoots that have grown this year have been the monthly Family Service as well as Footprints Toddler Group, both of these have welcomed many new families that have never been to our church before. The Family Service has developed a regular pattern which allows families of all ages engage with the Bible teaching each time. Footprints has slowly built up a group of regular attendees and welcomes new families most weeks.

Alpha ran in the Summer which saw both new and longstanding members of church coming along; it was greatly appreciated and no matter what stage of faith there was still plenty to learn and reflect upon.

We have continued to run short courses which are always well attended and include those from across the Mission Area.

The relationship with primary schools in the parish have continued to develop over the last year, with increasing demand for engagement, particularly with Bramley Grange and Bramley Sunnyside Infant schools. There are many seeds being planted and we should be encouraged about the possibilities this could lead to.

A well-established team have been taking monthly services at Silverwood Residential home, this is much appreciated by the residents. On most occasions we give thanks for those who have died since our last visit, but this is balanced with welcoming new residents to our service and having the opportunity to worship, hear God’s Word and share in Holy Communion together.

In the Summer we welcomed Rev James Gould and his family (Gail, Jessica and Samuel) who joined us for his Curacy; this has been a great blessing to us across the Mission Area.

In the Autumn term we began a series on being Lights for Christ which helped us to think about receiving, walking in and reflecting the light of Christ. This then led on to a listening afternoon and a subsequent period of prayer, asking God for His plans and our part in them.

As a result of this we have discerned the priorities for St Francis need to be Growing in faith Deeper so that we can reach out Wider:

**Growing Deeper** through services, home groups, regular prayer and personal time with God; nurturing new believers with short courses and groups (Receive and Walking in the Light)

**Reaching Wider** by welcoming not only those who come to church, but engaging with those in our communities who are on the margins and need to know the love of God in Jesus (Reflecting the Light)

7

There is much hope to be taken from Mission and Ministry in the last year which can certainly be built upon in the year to come as we seek God’s heart and follow Jesus in our daily lives.

## **3.5 Church Wardens report for the year 2024**

The year stared with a lot of gales and during one of them the fence between the car park and the grass play area was blown down. The upright posts had all rotten at the bottom. John Greaves my fellow Church Warden with help put in gravel boards and then wooden panels which were then painted – an excellent result.

The redecoration of the church and hall has started. It was decided that the ceilings be done by a professional decorator. John cleaned the wood panelling behind the altar, varnished the wooden window frames and painted the main door into church. He also cleaned the flat roof over the vestry. A small team under the direction of John then started to paint the walls inside. The work is ongoing.

The space between the car park and the bungalow wall has been tarmacked.

When we had the PAT testing done, the microwave was found to be faulty as were 2 extension leads. Thanks to Chris Leverton who dealt with replacements and at the same time purchased a new fridge. Chris and David Batty replaced the floor covering in the Vestry.

Storage space has always been a problem. Folding chairs for the hall have always been stored in the flower room. We thought there was a health and safety problem and purchased a trolley which the chairs would stack on. The stacking was not easy, some of it took place over shoulder height. Other possibilities are being examined.

We are exploring ways of improving the audio visual set up in church – swapping the central screen for large TVs providing a clearer picture, plus having a portable screen in the hall for times when church is full e.g. Remembrance Day service and for use independently.

We were pleased to welcome Revd. James Gould as curate to the two parishes – St Francis and St Leonard’s. He has settled in well and is an asset. We may only be approximately two miles apart but the needs and expectations of the two parishes are different.

The pattern of Sunday services has settled. On Sunday mornings we have Holy Communion on two Sundays and Service of the Word on two Sundays each month. Refreshments are served after the services. Provision for older children has been set up in the hall with the area for younger children remaining in the worship space. A Family service is held on the first Sunday of each month at 4pm.

When there are five Sundays in the month a joint service is held at Bramley and Thrybergh in turn. The attendance at this service has been good.

Arrangements for Baptisms and Weddings can be made in the church on the first Saturday of each month between 10am and 12 noon when we have Cuppa and Chat which is open to all.

Footprints our toddler group started in September each Thursday 9:30-11am.

John Greaves, resigned as Church Warden for personal reasons in February 2025. John worked very hard on the fabric. Thank you John. I am pleased you are still with us and know you are only willing to help in any way you can.

I want to thank you all for your prayers and support while I have been church warden. It has been a pleasure and an humbling experience to serve God and to serve you in

8

the Parish of St Francis. It was a real joy, during my time as warden to welcome Helen back as our shepherd and see her developing into her role as Parish Priest. We are truly blessed by her ministry.

A tale for telling:

Malcolm Brown who was chairman of the Bramley Parish Council, wanted to build bridges and get the community more involved by arranging more community events. One of the outreach events was Coffee mornings at Flash Lane youth building. They soon became a weekly event. A number of the church members supported this and as a result some of the friends they made have become members of St Francis. ‘ _**Evangelism?’**_

As we move forward with faith, hope and love, may the Father bless us, the Son lead us and the Spirit empower us to declare the good news in our Parish. Amen

## **3.6 Deanery Synod Report**

Deanery Synod Report for 2025 APCM

Rotherham Deanery Synod has met 3 times in the last 12 month, as well as holding a Deanery Day in July.

The following themes and items have been the subject of meetings:

In February we met at Holy Trinity, Thorpe Hesley with an opportunity to share Good news

stories from across the Deanery, updates on vacancies and information about opportunities

to work together.

In June we hosted the synod meeting here at Bramley. Rev’d Sally Myers spoke about Focal

Ministry and we had time to speak with Focal ministers from around the Diocese with different examples of how focal ministry teams work in various contexts.

Deanery Day – at the start of July, Bishop Pete and some of the Senior Staff Team spent the

day in Rotherham Deanery experiencing a wide variety or ministries and mission. From

visiting schools and community cafes, to a market stall in the town centre – an encouraging

time for all.

In November we again hosted a Twin Deanery meeting (joined by Laughton Deanery) in

which Alex Shilkoff presented information about the Diocesan Strategy Refresh and the bid

9

for funding from Central Church to support parish ministry.

Rev Helen Terry

## **3.7 Treasurer’s Report and Financial Statements**

You will see from the Audited Accounts on Page 4 that we are well in funds - £97,836.97.

Last year folks were again very generous in their giving and this was up by almost £8,000. I am very grateful for your support and the church runs on our income so thankyou.

Overall our income increased by over ten thousand pounds thanks also to moving our investments from Virgin Money to CCLA which gives a much better rate of interest. Hall lettings were up as we have increased the hall rent and have had various groups using the church on a regular basis.

Expenditure increased by nearly ten thousand pounds – large repair bills and also increased wages in line with current rates for our office manager and cleaner.

Rita Morse Treasurer

## **3.8 Financial Statements 31 December 2024**

## **4. Ministry Reports**

A selection of some of the ministries that we are involved in.

## **4.1 Homegroup ministry**

## **Homegroup Ministry 2024-2025**

St Francis church currently has seven homegroups meeting on different days midweek, generally during the afternoon or in an evening, in and around the parish. Most people enjoy the hospitality of people's homes but we have one group that enjoys meeting in our church building.

We do hope to be starting another group in the future so that we can accommodate other members of the congregation who do not yet have the joy of belonging to a group.

10

There’s now a total of around fifty people from our congregation who attend a homegroup, we do encourage everyone to be part of one. We feel that it’s important that everyone in the church family is discipled and cared for and just as importantly, to be growing in faith together as we study God's word and worship him.

Each group has their own individual style and follows it’s own pattern of meeting and studying of scripture etc relevant to each group. There is often a time of worship, prayer, reading and studying of the bible and time to socialise over refreshments that often involves cake!

Most groups enjoy occasions where they have a social evening either at home or in the wider community and beyond!

Belonging to a Home group is a real blessing, it's a place where relationships grow deeper and friendships develop. It's the place where we can share in confidence our thoughts and feelings, our joys and sorrows. It's a place where we can minister to each other and encourage one another as we journey together in faith.

If you don’t belong to a Homegroup and would like to explore this wonderful aspect of being church, please do come and speak to me about joining one. If you would like to host a group at your home with someone else leading the group, do let me know.

God bless you all as you grow together in love and fellowship and shine as lights for Christ.

Rev Judy Leverton

## Alan and Joyce Taylors Homegroup

Our evenings consist of fellowship over refreshments followed by bible study and prayer

We meet freely together in fellowship, seeking to know Jesus more, become more like Him and to grow in faith and be inspired to spread the Good News.

Alan Taylor

## **Sue’s House Group**

Sue’s House Group met fortnightly in 2024 on the first and third Monday of each month from February to the beginning of December with a summer break in August. We finished the Lumo series on the Gospel of Luke, watched Season 3 of “The Chosen” and also watched and discussed the teaching DVD series by Christopher Hill entitled “ Christ Our Passover” and “Peter the Man and His Message.” The group enjoyed two films.(i) “The Case for Christ” which is based on the book by journalist Lee Strobel who tried unsuccessfully to disprove the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and (ii) “God’s Not Dead which showed the pressure that young people face in higher education if they acknowledge a belief in Jesus Christ as the risen Son of God.

## **Audreys Homegroup**

**We used to call our group WAGS because we meet on alternate Wednesday afternoons . ( Incidentally several members loved football) Core members have been meeting since Lyn was our vicar and so we are a GG group now ie Gently Geriatric !**

## **4.2 Bramley Friendship Group**

During the year the group met each 1st and 3rd Thursday in the month providing a Warm Space for people to meet in the Church hall. ## **MOTHERS’ UNION REPORT FOR 2024**

At the end of 2024 the Mothers' Union membership stands at 13 active members and 3 indoor members ( members who are not able to attend meetings because of ill health or other incapacity). The latest of which is our dear friend Wyn Hibberd, who had a couple of serious falls at the back end of 2024, as a result of which she is now a resident of Silverwood Care Home.

12

We continue with a full programme of speakers, our annual lunch (due to take place on 14[th] April, an outing to Epworth for afternoon tea in June, our main fundraising event in July ( Bramley's legendary Strawberry Cream Tea ) and of course Mary Sumner Day service in the Cathedral on the 9[th] August.

## **4.4 Report on Zoom Morning Prayer Services (APCM 2025)**

An informal service of Morning Prayer is held on Zoom on Tuesday mornings between 10 and 11o’clock. The group agreed to change from Thursday mornings to Tuesday mornings to facilitate members of the prayer group who wanted to help out at the “Foot Prints” group. Dr. and Mrs. Dotse host the meeting which is led by Sue Watts. The use of Zoom has helped members of the group to access the service whilst they have been away on holidays abroad. It has also made the service accessible with help for a long standing member of the group to participate from a care home. We follow an adapted Morning Prayer Service and a psalm from the church lectionary is always included.

A group of up to 10 people regularly pray for over 30 prayer requests. Updates are given about answers to prayer. We pray about the needs and circumstances of local individuals and their families and also for persecuted Christians around the world, the UK government and for other countries. Many of the prayer requests are confidential. Anyone wishing to join the group is asked to talk to Sue who has the zoom log in details.
