3.3 Report on the proceedings of the PCC

PCC Report for the APCM -30[th] April 2023

As the Covid restrictions were finally lifted in 2022, it felt that life for the church was getting back to normal. The PCC followed the advice of the Church of England and social distancing was relaxed but the extension into the hall has remained open for people wishing to socially isolate and hand gel is readily available and people are encouraged to use them. At first the distribution of Holy Communion, offering the bread only,

meant we remained seated while the celebrant distributed Holy Communion. This has now been relaxed and people receiving Communion can now go forward to the Altar and receive the bread only, if preferred, or together with the wine. The PCC has appointed new Communion Assistants and we are grateful to all who have served in this ministry but have now stood down for various reasons. We thank all who now serve in this ministry.

The PCC has considered the Focal Ministry model for St Francis and were delighted to welcome Rev Dr Sally Myers, Diocesan Director of Focal Ministry, to the PCC meeting in February 2022 and the PCC were pleased that a lot of Focal Ministry is already being implemented on an informal basis. This is to be considered in more detail in 2023.

Sally accepted an invitation to preach at a Sunday morning Service last summer and said she was delighted to have the opportunity to preach on a theme other than Focal Ministry.

The PCC submitted an application to be recognised as an eco-church and St Francis was awarded Eco Status by A. Rocha Ltd, which is a Christian organisation supporting churches to become more eco-friendly and environmentally aware and protect God’s creation. Our application scored in 4 categories, with one gold, two silver and one bronze rating. Thank you to Sue Watts and Rita Morse who prepared the application on behalf of the PCC.

In April we welcomed the community choir Friends in Harmony to their new permanent rehearsal home in the church hall. The choir performed

6

a concert in church in December called ‘Songs for a December Evening’,

in aid of church funds and over £600 was raised.

On 20 th May the church hosted a concert in church to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth ll. This was organised by Bramley

Parish Council and included music from every decade of the Queen’s reign and was provided by Bramley Brass Band.

This was followed by a service of Celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee on Sunday 5 th June of the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

The PCC encouraged church members to support Operation Christmas Child. This was in response to the presentation by local representatives of Samaritan’s Purse at the Mothers’ Union Strawberries and Cream Tea event and the response to the annual appeal was very good.

The PCC has sent a donation to Sunnyside Supplies because of the difficulties in maintaining donations to the food bank. Members of the church family have continued to bring food gifts to church for Sunnyside Supplies.

The undoubted highlight of the year was the appointment of Rev Helen Terry as the Curate in Charge of St Francis and also St Leonard’s Church, Thrybergh. After the commissioning service by Bishop Pete Wilcox, Bishop of Sheffield, St Francis hosted a bring and share lunch for visitors from St Leonard’s and Helen’s previous Church, at Whaley Bridge as well as her family and friends. The PCC was represented in the appointment process, and we are delighted that Helen has accepted the opportunity to serve in the two parishes.

The PCC decided to hold a tabletop sale in October and the Christmas Fair for the first time since 2019. Both events were opportunities to invite people from the wider community back into church and raise funds for the church.

The PCC has overseen the services for Easter and Christmas and hosted the Christingle Service in December. The PCC also hosted the annual Service of Remembrance and Steve Trotter played the church organ for the service. The church welcomed representatives from Bramley Parish Council, the Royal British Legion, the uniformed organisations, and Bramley Brass Band which played music in church and led the procession to the Memorial Gardens in Cross Street. The service was well attended by the people of Bramley and the church provided refreshments at the end of the Act of Remembrance. It was with great sadness that the church learnt of the deaths of three members of our Church family, Bessie Penlington, who was our organist

7

for many years, Pearl Longden and Maureen Moore. Their individual

contributions to our church ministry are incalculable and we miss them all and send our sympathies to the family and friends.

We were sorry to say goodbye to the three asylum seekers who are Christians from Iran and attended regularly at St Francis. They were relocated from Bramley and were not able to travel to St Francis to worship. Some members of our congregation have been able to stay in touch with them.

We have welcomed new members to our church family and others who have returned to St Francis.

The minutes of the PCC are displayed in the church hall for all members of the church to read once they have been approved by the PCC. Any member of the church can request the PCC to consider any matter they wish to raise, by speaking to a member of the PCC.

3.4 CHURCH WARDEN’S REPORT JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2022

During the year the safeguarding rules introduced during the pandemic were eased.. The two metre rule ended, wearing masks became optional and we could sit next to each other. In communion we started to receive the bread dipped in the wine and at the end of the year we were back to normal and could take to wine from the chalice.

During the pandemic when we could not gather in church we used Zoom for the morning service. We could only have one morning service and we tried to make that service user friendly to people from both services. Most of the people who normally came to the second service did not join us on Zoom and when we opened again, due to lack of musicians, we could only have one service and found that most of the people who had come to the second service before the pandemic did not return, some having moved on to pastures new. Thank you to all who supported us during those very difficult times.

Can I thank Judy and Chris Leverton for leading services, arranging baptism preparation time, leading the baptism services in church and taking funeral services. John Hibberd for leading services and taking courses during the year. Thank you members of the congregation who presented the sermon, led the intercessions, did the Bible readings, worked the computer, welcomed people as they arrived for the services and served refreshments after the service.

We were able to celebrate the feasts again. Each Sunday in Lent we placed symbols of our Lords Passion at the foot of the cross and on Easter Sunday the cross was covered in flowers to celebrate His victory over death. Services during Holy week were held in churches across the Mission Partnership.

The highlight of the year came in September when we welcomed back into the Christian fellowship at St. Francis the Rev. Helen Terry who became the Oversight Curate of Bramley and Thrybergh.

The Remembrance Service in November was very well attended. Bramley Brass led our parade to the Garden of Remembrance on Cross Street where the Roll of Honour was read, wreathes were placed on the memorial and a two minutes silence was observed. The gifts brought to church and Bramley-Sunnyside Junior School to celebrate Harvest were

8

donated to Sunnyside Supplies, who organise a Food Bank in the area. In church we have collected food over many years at the harvest and during the year to donate to charities, we now support Sunnyside Supplies.

Christmas: We put the Advent Wreathe in church and lit the candles each week. We went along to the King Henry to sing carols. We held our usual services. Christingle Service, Carol Service, Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve and a Family Service on Christmas morning. The Diocese and Deanery have used the church building during the year for a Deanery Synod meeting. For a day when clergy from outside the Diocese were invited to look at the Diocese and visit some of the churches. The Mothers’ Union for their Autumn Meeting. The local Council used the hall for a day for local Elections

During the year we had problems with some of our electric heaters in church. One needed a new socket. The folding doors between the church and the hall were adjusted. A handrail was fitted to the wall outside the fire exit from the back room. A grab rail fitted outside the kitchen door and a hold back hook on the door. A handrail was also fitted and a step repaird leading down to the cellar. Tiles in the porch repaired.

The Photo copier was dismantled and cleaned. One of the problems was due to damp copier paper.

Our electrical equipment was all found to be satisfactory when the Pat Test took place. We are in hoping to renew our First Aid certificates in the near future.

I very much appreciate the help I have had during the year from the administrator and members of the P.C.C.

As we move forward into the new year, 2023, with faith, hope and love. May the Father bless us, the Son lead us and the Spirit empower us to declare the Good News in our parish. James,

3.5 Deanery Synod Report

Deanery Synod Report for 2023 APCM

Anne Walker and Sue Watts are the elected Deanery Synod representatives for St Francis Church. Sue’s two terms of office expire in June 2023 but Anne has another three year term of office which will run from June 2023 to June 2026. Three Deanery Synod meetings were held across the Rotherham deanery in 2022.

The February Deanery Synod meeting was held at St Francis Church where Reverend Julie Bacon explained her new role. She is the Associate Archdeacon (Transition Enabler) in the Diocese of Sheffield. The post is for a 5 year period and is funded through Strategic Development Funding from the Church Commissioners. Julie sees her role as helping clergy and lay people to adopt new ways of fulfilling their vocation of being the whole people of God.

The June Deanery Synod meeting was hosted by St John’s Church at Kimberworth Park. The main item was a talk given by Tim Jensen on Mental Health Awareness. Tim has experience as a Mental Health Nurse, a Mental Health Chaplain and as a trainer who delivers a Mental Health First Aid Course to professional bodies. Tim set the context of mental health by reading Genesis chapter 2, verses 2 and 3. These verses refer to God resting from the work of Creation on the seventh day. He gently emphasised that we too, as God’s created human beings, need to rest from our labours regularly. Tim’s delivery was humorous and engaging. He highlighted that there are positive and negative levels of stress. Attendees were asked to share the different ways they use to de-stress.

9

The November Deanery Synod meeting was held at Rawmarsh church hall. Hannah Sandoval (Lights for Christ Enabler) gave a presentation on ‘Lights for Christ – Reflecting Afresh on our Callings’. She said that the Church is emerging from ‘Survival Mode’ and beginning to ask the questions ‘What do we do as a church now?’ and ‘What would it be helpful to stop doing?’ Hannah reminded us that we all have a common calling to be ‘Lights for Christ’. In both the Baptism Service and the Confirmation Service it states: ‘You have received the light of Christ, walk in this light all the days of your life’. Through the use of small picture cards attendees were asked to share what they believe their callings are.

3.6 Treasurer’s Report and Financial Statements

TREASURERS REPORT TO THE APCM

Treasurers report to APCM 2023

Attached you will see a copy of our Annual Accounts duly audited.

From these you will see our end of year funds are very healthy – we received a very generous bequest

of £50,000 which improved our figures tremendously. Notwithstanding that £50k our funds did improve

year on year.

We have asked folks how the bequest should be spent and had many ideas – all of which will be discussed after the new PCC is elected.

During this year we have decided to move away from keeping the bulk of our funds in a Virgin Money

account as the interest there is minimal (only 0.5% pa) so are in the process of moving the funds to

CCLA into a Church of England Deposit fund – interest rate much better at more than 3% pa so we will

be getting much better interest going forward.

4. Ministry Reports

A selection of some of the ministries that we are involved in.

4.1 Baptism Ministry

Firstly I’d like to say thank you so much to our Baptism ministry team, Chris, Sylvia, Anne, Yvonne and Rita. I’m very grateful to their ongoing commitment and dedication to this key ministry.

Over the past year we have had the huge privilege of ministering to the many families that have been welcomed into St Francis church through the sacrament of Baptism.

In total we have had the joy of baptising 19 children / babies and 3 adults.

All parents and godparents participated in the preparation sessions either in church or in their homes.

During the preparation, parents, godparents and older children explored the meaning of Christianity, Jesus, Baptism, sin, forgiveness, faith and the importance of church. This is essential for people to be able to say their vows and promises made in baptism service, with integrity and a degree of understanding of their commitments.

The baptism services have generally been family orientated taking place either in the morning service or dedicated service in the afternoon. The feedback that we’ve had from families has been very positive and a few families have started to attend church on a regular basis.

We do hope that in the future we may be able to start a parent and toddler group to which we can introduce families and continue to walk with them and encourage them on their journeys of faith.

God bless you all richly

Judy Leverton

4.2 Homegroup ministry

Homegroups have changed dramatically since covid and we are currently in the process of re-establishing them as far as we are able. Currently there are three groups meeting on a regular basis.

We are keen to ensure that everyone in our church family is cared for and supported. It is our intention to update our home group records to form a clearer picture of who is currently attending a homegroup and receiving pastoral care within this ministry

Our hope that is in doing this we will ensure that there are opportunities for everyone to receive pastoral care and regular fellowship outside of the Sunday service.

In the near future we hope to identify and encourage more homegroup leaders. Judy Leverton

11

4.3 Bramley Friendship Group

During the year the group met each 1[st] and 3[rd] Thursday in the month providing a Warm Space for people to meet in the Church hall. Drinks were provided, themed afternoons were introduced and guests were invited to give demonstrations. A selection of board games were always available for anyone to use. We had an influx of numbers in the middle of the year but then numbers declined towards the end of the year.

Alan Taylor

4.4 Mother’s Union

Our Mothers’ Union membership numbers continue to fall due to the sad loss of Maureen Moore and Pearl Longden. Our membership numbers are at an all time low of 16.

We continue to meet every month, either at St. Francis or at other social gatherings. We have had a variety of speakers and of course in July we held our annual Strawberry Cream Tea, which in 2022 raised an amazing £600+. This was donated to MU Away From It All holiday scheme, for disadvantaged families who haven’t had a holiday in over four years and also to our Indoor Members Fund for members who because of age and ill health are unable to attend their meetings. We continue to support other MU branches in their fundraising just as they in turn support us. We would love to welcome new members to join us be they male or female, we have no discrimination in the MU. If you are interested in coming to a meeting, we meet on the 2[nd] Monday in the month at 1.30pm. Please come and join us in fellowship.

Branch Co-ordinator

4.5 Thursday Morning Prayer Service

An informal service of Morning Prayer has continued to be held on Zoom on Thursday mornings between 10 and 11 am. It is hosted by Dr.& Mrs Dotse and led by Sue Watts. When abroad in Ghana the Dotses still host the Zoom service. Another member joins us from Spain when on holiday - distance is no barrier. We follow an adapted Morning Prayer Service and a psalm is included. A group of up to 10 people regularly pray for approximately thirty five prayer requests. Updates are given about answers to prayer. We pray about the needs and circumstances of individuals and their families and also for persecuted Christians around the world, the UK government and for other countries. The prayer requests are confidential. New people are welcome to join the group. Sue has the log in details for joining the zoom session. Sue Watts Prayer Coordinator

12

4.6 Pastoral Ministry

Pastoral Ministry is provided in the following ways: Confidential Prayer Team

There is a core group of 10 volunteers who pray for emergency prayer requests and for ongoing confidential prayer requests. We pray for the latter each Thursday morning at the Zoom Morning Prayer Services. The confidential prayer requests are updated on a regular basis and new prayer lists are provided every couple of weeks.

Support is also given through phone calls, text messages, emails and informal chats at church and in the community.

At a recent meeting to discuss pastoral oversight with Reverend Helen Terry and Reverend Judy Leverton a decision was made by Reverend Judy that she would head up a new Pastoral Visitors’ Team. It was felt that this had become necessary as many of the previous Pastoral Visitors’ Team were now elderly and unable to continue to offer support in this way.
