The reports were received for information. 3 ## 5. Elections of Parochial Church Council Members There are three vacancies and two nominations were received. The following were elected to serve as members of the PCC: - 1) Yvonne Hellewell -Proposed by Judy Sutton and Seconded by Rita Morse - 2) Dan Fall - Proposed by Anne Walker and Seconded by Sue Watts There is one vacancy. ## 6. Appointment of Independent Examiner Proposed by Rita Morse and Seconded by Sylvia Graham that RNS Chartered Accountants Scunthorpe be appointed. AIF 7. Other Business PCC – Term of Office. In line with Church Representation Rule M16(7) (i.e. term of office), nobody who is a PCC member under Rule M15(1)(j) (i.e. elected members of the laity) may hold office for a continuous period which exceeds six years. Rev Canon Phil Batchford thanked everyone for their attendance and closed the meeting in prayer. ## **2.1 Minutes of the Special Church Meeting** ## Held at St Francis’ Church on Sunday 24[th] October 2021 at 11:30am **Present:** Rev Canon Phil Batchford, Area Dean, in the chair Alan Taylor, Joyce Taylor, Sylvia Graham, Chris Leverton, Irene Magill, Anne Walker, Graham Watts, Sue Watts and James Moore. Chris Leverton, as acting vice-chair of the PCC, took the chair with the consent of those present. James will serve until the next Annual Vestry meeting in 2022. ## **Parochial Church Meeting** Elections of Deanery Synod Representative. 4 A vacancy has arisen resulting in the election. Mrs Anne Walker proposed by James Moore and seconded by Sylvia Graham. AIF. Anne is therefore elected as Deanery Synod representative and will serve the remaining time of the original appointment. (Elected)|| The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. ## **3.2 Electoral Roll Officer’s Report May 2022** I hereby certify that the numbers of electors on the Church electoral roll of Bramley Parish as revised for the APCM on May 12[th] 2022 was _61._ I hereby certify that out of the number of electors shown above _43_ are resident within the parish. _Katy Dunigan - Electoral Roll Officer_ ## **3.3 Report on the proceedings of the PCC** ## **PCC Report for the APCM -12[th] May 2022** It has been another challenging year for St Francis’ church as the pandemic continued. The PCC met on 11 occasions since the last APCM. The first two meetings were held via Zoom and then from September 2021 we began meeting in person. During the year we welcomed Ven. Julie Bacon, Associate Archdeacon – Transition Enabler, to our September meeting. In February 2022 we welcomed Rev. Dr Sally Myers, Director of Focal Ministry in the Diocese of Sheffield to our meeting. In September 2021 there were four resignations, two as PCC members, one church warden and one deanery synod representative. A special APCM was held in October 2021 and James Moore was elected as churchwarden and Mrs Anne Walker was elected as deanery synod representative. Mrs Rita Morse stood down as vice-chair of the PCC and Chris Leverton was elected as acting vice-chair until such time that Rita felt able to continue as vice-chair. The PCC also took the decision, on the advice of Ven. Julie Bacon, to not renew the contract of our youth worker because of the impact the pandemic had on church finances. We said goodbye to Dan and Julia Fall at our service on Sunday 31[st] October 2021 when a presentation was made on behalf of the church by James Moore. On 11[th] November 2021 (Armistice Day) the church was open for a couple of hours for people to come in for quiet reflection. On Sunday 14th November the church hosted the Remembrance Day Service. This was very well attended and included children and young people from the local uniformed organisations as well as local schools. The congregation then processed to the Memorial Gardens in Cross Street for the observance of the Two Minutes’ Silence and the laying of wreaths. There was a very good turnout of the local community in Bramley. Refreshments were served in the church hall afterwards. The church hosted a Christingle service at the beginning of December and children from local schools came to church for their carol services. The church’s own carol service was held on Sunday 19[th] December. The Christmas Eve Holy Communion Service was held at 11:00pm and a family service was held on Christmas Day morning. 6 The PCC agreed to the church taking part in an Epiphany course and then a Lent course which took place across the Silverwood Mission Area. The Ash Wednesday service and the services in Holy Week were also joint services across the Mission Area. St Francis hosted the Maundy Thursday service. As the year progressed the PCC kept Covid restrictions under review and continued to encourage people attending services to wear face masks, although no longer mandatory, as well as using hand sanitiser on arrival at church and the continued opening of windows to ensure ventilation. The back of the hall remained open to extend the Worship area to encourage social distancing, should people wish to do so. The hall was closed during the winter months as fewer people attended the Sunday service but re-opened again to provide more space in February 2022. Also in February, following further easing of covid restrictions, the PCC agreed to the simultaneous administration of Holy Communion by intinction of the wafer into either the alcoholic or nonalcoholic wine and communicants were able to move to the altar area to receive, rather than the president moving to the congregation to distribute the bread. Refreshments at the end of the Sunday service have now resumed. The year also saw the start of a new church group open to the wider community: Bramley Friendship Group, which has proved to be very popular. The PCC has been represented in the process to appoint a new oversight minister. The PCC has adopted a Complaints Policy and Procedure and updated the Health and Safety policies and has reviewed the fire procedures that are now in place. It has also reviewed the Safeguarding policies. St Francis has also hosted the Deanery’s ‘Living in Love and Faith’ course which ran from December to February; and also a meeting of the Deanery Synod which was held in church on Wednesday 16[th] February 2022. On Sunday 13[th] March Gill Haggie, the local Christian Aid organiser, was able to bring her FairTrade stall to church for the first time in two years. Although several people have left our church for various reasons, we have been delighted to welcome new members to our church family. As the Government has now lifted all Covid restrictions the PCC is committed to ensuring that St Francis continues to be a safe and welcoming church for all its church family and visitors. ## **3.4 CHURCH WARDEN’S REPORT JANUARY TO DECEMBER 2021** It has not been an easy year. With pandemic in its second year we started the year in Lockdown. Services were held on Zoom, and only one service could be done. Although this was not ideal it gave us the opportunity to worship God together and also a chance to learn some of the excellent new worship songs. The restrictions started to ease a little and we were able to gather together in Church for our Worship wearing masks and adhering to the social distancing rules. Holy Communion was introduced where the presiding minister came round and gave us bread, it was not possible to have wine. We had a special service on 31[st] . October to thank Dan Fall for his ministry as youth worker to the young people of the parish, and for his ministry to the second service playing the guitar and singing with his wife Julia. Their children Noah and Rachel were present. The sermon was presented by Dan. At the end of the service, I thanked him for the work he and Julia had done and 7 presented him with a card signed by the congregation and a cheque, money collected by the congregation. In Autumn we had the usual Remembrance Service for people who had lost relatives since the start of the Pandemic. On Remembrance Sunday in November we had a service in church followed by a parade, led by Bramley Brass to the Garden of Remembrance on Cross Street during which wreaths were laid. Both services were led by the Revd. John Hibberd. After the service tea / coffee was served in the church hall. In December the Advent wreath was placed on top of the font with the candles being lit each Sunday. The crib was placed in the sanctuary and the Christmas Tree decorated. We saw a return of our usual Christmas Services, Christingle Service, Carol Service, Midnight Communion on Christmas Eve and a morning service on Christmas Day. One evening we went along to the King Henry and sang carols. _**(See Schools)**_ Early in the New Year Terry Walker resigned as Church Warden, later in the year Alan Taylor resigned. Just before Christmas Terry said he was having a break from playing for services. I would like to thank Terry for the years of dedicated service he has given to the church here in Bramley, being church warden, church treasurer and playing the keyboard to accompany the songs at the second service. I also want to thank the worship leaders who sang at all the second services and led some of them. God bless you all and it would be nice to welcome you back With Bessie, our organist in a care home we had no one to play for the first service, Pam Jackson played the piano for us for a while and Liz Bentley played the organ for funerals and some of our services. With Terry withdrawing we are short of musicians now. Chris Leverton who plays the guitar has done a great job playing for many of the services Thank you Chris. We are blessed that Revd. John Hibberd, who has a position in the diocese, lives in our parish. He hosted the services and a course on Zoom. Revd. Judy Leverton and her husband Chris, who is a lay reader, came back to live in the parish after they retired. Judy and Chris were members of our congregation years ago when they both felt God calling them, Judy to the priesthood and Chris to be a lay reader. This means that we are able to have Holy Communion once a fortnight and Judy and Chris have taken responsibility for Baptism preparation and Services. A very sincere thanks to all three of you. I feel the quality of worship at the service on Sundays is very good and I would like to thank all who have taken part in the services. I very much appreciate the help of Sylvia Graham who opens the church and puts the heating on each Sunday and keeps a record of those who attend. The set up of the Diocese is changing and a document, ‘A Guide to Focal Ministry’, has been produced by the Diocese. The P.C.C. has discussed the document and are hoping to get Dr. Sally Miles to come to a meeting in the new year to give more details. We will not be taking action until an Oversight Minister has been appointed. The congregation will be involved when we start work on the new set up. Towards the end of the year our church treasurer and chair of the PCC Rita Morse needed to go into hospital for an operation. Sylvia Graham and our Administrator, Katy were appointed to look after the accounts during Rita’s absence and did an excellent job. Christ Leverton was elected chair of the PCC. 8 Rita was soon home again and taking up the accounts. Thank you Rita for all that you do. Thank you:- Alan Taylor for being a church warden and after resigning carrying on with some of the jobs. Irene Magill the Magazine editor and secretary of the PCC Sue Watts our lay reader for the many jobs she does. To all leaders of the fellowship groups. It is always a pleasure to come into a well cared for church. Peter Jackson our gardener – the grounds give the first impression of our church. To all the members of the PCC for the support they have given to me as church warden. To all the congregation for their financial support of the church A reminder that God has given all of us talents to use to his glory. Everyone of us using those talents is so important and will be even more important in the years to come. We are the Body of Christ in Bramley and however small we may consider our talent to be it is important that we use it. **The Terrier** – a list of the land belonging to the church. **Inventory** - a list of the items belonging to the church which are checked each year. I have been through this and have listed the items under the place where they are. E.g. Kneelers in the Sanctuary etc. This will make the checking each year must easier and can then be related back to the Inventory. **Log book** – is a detailed record of all alterations, actions and repairs to the church and its contents. Sylva Graham keeps this up to date. A big Thank You to Carol and David Bowser for the time spent and work they did refurbishing the kitchen. We now have a dishwasher and later in the year when the fridge broke down Chris Leverton got a new one fitted. During the year work was done:Levelling the area at the top of the steps to the main entrance to church; Repair to various heaters in the church and a broken socket on the electrics in the office; Repair to the ladies toilet. Work in hand for 2022 The Portable Appliance Test (PAT) is being arranged. An update of the Health and Safety Policy to be printed. The fire precautions are under review and due to be updated. We are also working on a Complaints procedure document. First Aid certificates need renewing. Items from category B in the Quinquennial report needing attention. In conclusion we look forward to the appointment of our Oversight Minister and our moving into the future with faith, hope and love. Prayer: May the blessing of God Almighty, The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Rest upon us 9 And upon all our work and worship done in His Name. May He give us Light to guide us, Courage to support us, Love to unite us, Now and evermore. Amen. James Moore Church Warden ## **3.5 Deanery Synod Report** ## **Deanery Synod Report for APCM 2022** There were three Deanery Synod meetings in 2021; two of which were held on Zoom. During the summer of 2021, Annette Walker resigned as a Deanery Synod representative for St Francis, Bramley. Ann Walker was voted in as her replacement to join Sue Watts. The first meeting which was held on Zoom took place on the 15[th] February. The main focus of the meeting was “God’s Creation: Our Vision and Mission.” The Diocesan Environment Officer, Cathy Rhodes, gave a presentation which highlighted the global challenges of climate change and the ecological emergency. Cathy told us that a concerted effort is needed for the diocese to work together to reduce the carbon footprint of churches, clergy housing, church schools, Church House and work-related travel. All parishes in Rotherham deanery are being encouraged to register as Eco- Churches. The second Deanery Synod meeting was held on Zoom on the 15[th] June. The main item was introduced by the Area Dean, Phil Batchford: “Living in Love and Faith – Issues for Discussion in the Parishes.” A course entitled “Living in Love and Faith” for the deaneries of Laughton and Rotherham has been delivered over five sessions at St Francis Church, Bramley. The third Deanery Synod meeting on the 17[th] November was held at St Mary’s Church, Greasbrough. Sally Myers, the Diocesan Director of Focal Ministry, gave a video presentation about Focal Ministry Teams in Firbeck, Penistone and Kimberworth Park who have taken part in a pilot project. Sally is available to speak to PCC’s and congregations about the role of a Focal Ministry Team. She spoke to Bramley church PCC on the 3[rd] February this year. Sue Watts Deanery Synod Representative 10 ## **3.6 Treasurer’s Report and Financial Statements** TREASURERS REPORT TO THE APCM Another very challenging year as our assets have dwindled considerably as we have had to withdraw £35,000 from reserves just to keep paying our bills. However, at the end of December 2021 we are now able to just balance our incomings and outgoings. Our monthly income is now average of £3688 which fortunately just about covers our Utility bills and the employment of an Administrator, Cleaner and Gardener. I advised the PCC in January 2021 that we could not keep making the same level of payment to the Diocese for the Common fund. The PCC chose to ignore my advice, hence the very big shortfall in 2021. . In July I prepared a PowerPoint presentation to the PCC of our financial position and again advised that we could no longer afford to keep paying the amount we did to the Diocese. I also warned that going forward we could no longer afford to employ a Youth worker. The PCC came to the very difficult decision in September not to renew our Youth Worker’s contract which ended in October and which would have cost the church around £16,000 per annum going forward. Fortunately, in November the PCC agreed to reduce the amount of Common fund payments by more than half which will help considerably going forward I am hopeful that our finances will recover in 2022 – we are getting more income in hall lettings for Slimming World, no longer have such a high Common Fund to pay and no longer have to meet the salary of a Youth Worker. Again I am extremely grateful to all our congregation for your faithful giving to the church week by week and month by month. Thankyou so much. Ministry Reports** A selection of some of the ministries that we are involved in. ## **4.1 Baptism Ministry** During the past year we have had the great privilege of coming alongside a total of fourteen families, three of which were adult Baptism. All the families and godparents have participated in baptism preparation which has taken place in St Francis Church for two hours on a Saturday morning. During this interactive preparation, parents explore the meaning of Christianity, Jesus, Baptism, sin, forgiveness, faith and the 11 importance of church. This is essential for people to be able to say their vows and promises made in baptism service, with integrity and a degree of understanding of their commitments. We have also carried out baptism preparation in the homes of parents and godparents who have been unable to attend the Saturday preparation. The baptism services tend to be family orientated and have been well received by parents families and friends, the feedback has been good. We would like to say a huge thank you to our Baptism preparation team, Sylvia, Anne, Yvonne and Rita. They have worked tirelessly and with real faithfulness and commitment to this aspect of the church’s ministry. We couldn’t have managed without them. God bless you all richly Judy and Chris Leverton ## **4.2 Fellowship group report** We restarted our fellowship group in September. It has been a little bit hit and miss and is quite embryonic but we are now settling into a Bible study and mutual support model. We did try to engage with LLF material but concluded that since the deanery was running sessions at St Francis church, that was perhaps a better forum. There are six regular members at present, and we derive a great deal of joy in our sharing and study as well as growing in faith together. We are currently studying the book of Romans and enjoying wrestling with the challenges that St Paul poses in this letter. Love Chris and Judy ## **4.3 Footprints** Footprints did not run in 2021 ## **4.4 St Francis Players** .We have not met for two years and during this time we lost two of our leaders, Geoff and Maureen, who have left the district. Being soloists they were very important when we produced the Roger Jones Musicals. We lost Ivy Fisher who took part in all productions. If we open up again, we have lost our pianist Bessie, depends on someone playing for us and people wanting to gather again. James and Maureen 12 ## **4.5 Schools** We have not been able to go into schools because of the Pandemic but things eased during the Autumn Term. On 19[th] . October in the afternoon we had a Harvest Service in church for Bramley Sunnyside Junior School Year 3. The Children presented work they had done on the harvest, Judy and Chris led the service and gave the talk. There were 87 children and 67 adults present. After the service I went to the school to collect the harvest produce donated by the families and I took it to Rotherham Food Bank. The boot and back of the car were full. The Parish Council always invite children from Bramley Sunnyside Junior School to the Garden of Remembrance on Cross Street on November 11[th. .] At 11 a.m. we had the last post and reveille played by Alan Taylor and we observed two minutes silence. The children read some of the work they had done. This year our M.P. John Healey joined us. The Chairman of the Parish Council, Malcolm Brown, gave a short talk followed by prayers and the blessing. 7[th] . December - Bramley Sunnyside Junior School Year 4 came to church. The Service was led by Judy and Chris. 16[th] . December I went to Bramley Sunnyside Infants School where I was made very welcome. I took two assemblies one for the children in the foundation unit and then one for the rest of the school. 16[th] . December - Bramley Grange School had their service in School. We were made very welcome, the school performed a lovely Christmas play and Judy gave the talk. Katy sent a Christmas card to each school from the church. James. ## **4.6 Bramley Friendship Group ( Formerly Art, Craft, Social Group)** The fortnightly Art, Craft and Social Group started in November and is an opportunity for church members and members of the community to meet socially and do crafts, play board games or just chat. There was a regular attendance with some people from the community joining our church members. We aim to continue this in 2022. Alan Taylor ## **4.7 Mother’s Union** The Mothers’ Union had their last meeting in February 2020 and didn’t resume meetings until September 2021. During that time several of our members passed away and several others were no longer fit enough to attend meetings. So our numbers have dwindled somewhat. We have gone from 25 members in February 2020 to 19 at the present time. This is the lowest our membership has been for a long time, but we continue to meet and to raise funds for our MU charity A.F.I.A ( away from it all). We also support other branches in our Deanery in their fundraising events. All members of the congregation are welcome to come to our meetings which are held on the 2nd Monday of the month at 1.30pm. A welcome will also be extended to any members of the community who would like to attend, male or female, all are welcome. Anne Walker Branch Co Ordinator. 13 ## **4.8 Christian Aid** There were no Lent Lunches last year or door to door collections but Wickersley dropped off some envelopes and arranged collecting places and along with the proceeds from two quizzes raised £1,544. Our collection in Church was £262. The final total for Wickersley and Bramley after late donations was £2,036.15 which was excellent. Maureen Moore ## **4.9 Thursday Morning Prayer** An informal service of Morning Prayer has been held on zoom over the past year. This has allowed a regular group of up to 12 church members to participate despite covid-19 restrictions. Two church members have been able to host the service on zoom whilst on holiday in Ghana. Another church member has been able to join in the prayer service whilst on holiday in Spain. We pray about the confidential needs and circumstances of individuals and their families. We pray for persecuted Christians around the world, the UK government and for Fredrick and Reeba in India who are working to spread the gospel as well as providing food for their neighbours, the tailoring programme members and 200 pastors. We have prayed for several years for the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe so it was wonderful to hear about her recent release. We prayed for 18 months for 9 year old Jude Hawkridge from Thorpe Hesley to be recover from his devastating leukaemia. He finally left Manchester Children's Hospital on 6th December 2021. Last week he managed to go to the cinema which was another milestone as his strength returns following the gruelling months of CAR-T therapy. New people are always welcome to join our group. Sue Watts, Prayer Coordinator ## **4.10 The Pastoral Visitors' Team** The Pastoral Visitors' Team has had to change its focus during the last two years of the Covid-19 pandemic. Only essential visits were carried out to take shopping to older church members or to take them to booked medical appointments. Strict government guidelines were followed about the wearing of face masks, hand sanitising and fresh air flow in cars. Most of the pastoral support was given through telephone calls, text messages and emails. During the last twelve months several older church members have sadly passed away. The Pastoral Support Team Network which was set up at the start of the pandemic in March 2020, to prevent social isolation amongst church members, was gradually phased out as Covid-19 restrictions were eased. We expect to reassess the support we give to church members once an Oversight Minister is appointed. Sue Watts 14 ## **4.11 Homeless Café** Thank you to the wonderful generosity of Bramley St Francis we were able to contribute towards donating 124 shoeboxes to Lighthouse for men and Lighthouse for women for Christmas 2021.We also took donations of bedding and clothes. They were overjoyed and amazed at how kind people could be.
