All Trustees have agreed to serve for a second term until 31 May 2023.

## **Objectives and activities**

Streets4Christ aims to promote awareness and combat hunger, poverty, and suffering amongst the homeless and low waged community, by working with others to empower individuals and communities to effect change in the distribution of food and resources.

The relief of poverty of persons who are in conditions of need, hardship and distress, in particular but not exclusively by:

- 1) The provision of food, other nourishment, clothing and other items

- 2) The provision of information, advice and assistance to empower them to address their circumstances.

- 3) Working with other organisations and charities providing similar services and support.

## **- Word from Paul Traynor Co founder/CEO**

_Over the last ten years Streets4Christ outreach programme has evolved from dealing primarily with street sleepers, low waged & homelessness in Nottingham to supporting anyone in need who comes across our path._

_During this year, due to social and economic issues such as the pandemic, Brexit and rising living costs we’ve become so much more to a lot of people. As the cost of living crisis continues to increase, we’ve increased our work within the community that we serve: giving out food parcels, providing furniture (where possible, from donations) to people getting accommodation for the first time and we now dealing on a daily basis with the effects of poverty in various ways, including the effect on physical and mental health._

_We continue to provide food, clothing, bedding, toiletries as well as advice & support with benefits, job applications & housing referrals - the list goes on & on. If we can’t do it or provide it we try and find someone who can, and we are continually & consistently looking for ways to not only assist our service users, but to try to tackle the root problems & issues to prevent people falling into poverty & homelessness – it’s amazing what a 5 minute conversation about why a person may be ‘begging’ can do with a person who has no comprehension of struggling to find their next meal or that 5 minute conversation with someone street sleeping can uncover a myrid of issues that if supported may not have resulted in sleeping out in the cold_

_Unfortunately, the cost of living crisis is directly affecting the support & donations we receive which does have an effect on what will can provide, we are still coming to terms with the 100% rise in weekly building rental cost and have seen a hike in prices on other items used regularly_

_I know I’m bias but I feel Streets4Christ are making a significant difference in our community for the better. People continually return to us assistance and I’m so happy and proud that we even have people who having used the service are now in a position to want to volunteer to help others._

## **Charitable activities in the past year**

It has been business as usual for Streets4Christ, we continue to support the homeless and low-waged community. It was helpful that restrictions were eventually lifted so we were able to access the building. In the first few months we continued to restrict services to just take away meals and clothing, but gradually we have gone back to a sit down service, but still mindful of social distancing and the use of PPE.

It has been hard during this pandemic, we know our service users only come to us because of the need for a meal, warm clothes and temporary shelter. But often it’s much more than that. It’s interaction with people who will not judge them based on their circumstances. Having the shelter aspect restricted we have noticed some deterioration of peoples mental and physical health. We have even learned that a few of our regular attended have died. Our service continues to be an essential service without which many would be without basic essentials such as food and warmth, and while we are still unable to provide accommodation we provide bedding and food that could be eaten without needing the use of a cooker. Access to the building once a week is, for some users, their only access to washing facilities as they use the men’s/ladies toilets to wash in.

As with most services our fund raising efforts are still over shadowed by the knock on effect the pandemic has had. Even though we are a registered charity and there was some local funding we still could not access, as for the application we were required to provide a local address for all beneficiaries, which for us is impossible because of the service user status. Paul has

however done a number of radio interviews and this has generated some interest and funds for the charity. We still however are solely reliant on donations. Again due to the pandemic and the growing economic crisis, these donations go towards the rent of the building which has raised dramatically and the cost of provisions, food containers and clothes.

**The Sanctuary** - Traditionally the sit-down service operates on a Mondays from 6.30pm until the food is finished. We are still offering a 3 course meal and/or take away meal, clothing, food parcels and bedding. However, in line with government directions, access to the church building that is used by the project for its weekly has been restricted for a large portion of this financial year. Clothing, toiletries and bedding have continued to be distributed, because although some street sleepers were picked up and accommodated through local government short term initiatives people were still street

sleeping.

Outreach Distribution – Our bi-weekly outreach on the streets of Nottinghamshire continues. Distributing food, clothing and bedding. As restrictions were lifted the numbers of street sleepers increased due to local special lockdown ‘shelter’ measures being withdrawn and we found the need for ensuring we had enough ‘to go round’. We try to ensure we have relevant and up-to-date information about the other Food Banks, Soup Kitchens, Shelters and places where resources and information is relevant to the client group. Knowing where you can get a free haircut or a new warm jumper is of great importance.

As the City opened up more we were able to reduce our street visits and have currently returned to one on-street outreach session during the warmer months. However, foot traffic in the City still has not grown to

what it was, many more people are still working remotely, and also have their own reservation about crowds, public spaces and interaction with unknown people so street sleepers will again feel notice a reduction in the amount donated to them.

## **Impact on service users**

During the pandemic we’ve witnessed people returning again and again on a Monday night as they are guaranteed food without judgement. People congregate in places in the City Centre that we regular visit. Its been difficult at times as some people are not interested in social distancing they just want food, clothing and grateful to speak to someone.

## **Supporters/Volunteers**

Streets4Christ have continued to work in partnership with other local organisations, charities, churches and businesses. Paull (CEO) has very close links with The Haven in Stapleford & Bulwell Baptiste Church and The Haven have also donated food from their food bank program.

We now have a dedicated team of volunteers as well as the support of regular volunteers from local churches.

_I'm 49yrs young & I started using Streets4Christ's services 10yrs ago. At first it was for food & clothing etc. But over the years I've been given help & support with a range of issues including mental health & money management. Approximately 4yrs ago I was given the opportunity to volunteer on a weekly basis. Volunteering has been very beneficial for my mental wellbeing on many levels & gives me a great sense of purpose & belonging. We are like one big family. I believe this service to be invaluable in our community –_ _**Mark Trory**_

_I started this originally as a favour that was about 4 or 5 years ago. Since then I actually look forward to doing it on a weekly basis, my reason being is that I feel we shouldn't judge people based on the predicament that they're in and if I'm_

_able to help them by just giving them 'my time' then why wouldn't I? It cost nothing but my time which is free._

_Nobody knows what one day holds to the next any one of us might find ourselves in the same or similar predicament and all that is required to help is someone that cares, nothing more nothing less. We are all people at the end of the day regardless of your situation and we all require the same thing - somebody to care -_ _**Hayley**_

## **Future Plans and Changes**

We are always on the lookout for funding and ways we can generate income to further the work of Streets 4 Christ. We are committed to working with others who also strife to help others. While we have no major changes planned we have learnt over the past two years because of events beyond our control, that we need to be flexible and interchangeable in our delivery .i.e. food distribution in the car park.

We are thankful for all of the support, whether it from Fareshare, Nando’s, Tesco, Adsa, Greggs, the local shops, churches, the weekly volunteers, the back-up volunteers and the people who donation to the project.
