GLOSSOP CONCERT SOCIETY LTD (INCORPORATING THE GLOSSOP MUSIC FESTIVAL)

Charity Number: 1173405 Registered Company Number: 10734395

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE 2022-2023 YEAR

This report relates to the year from 1 August 2022 to 31 July 2023. This corresponds to the Society's financial accounting year. Happily a "normal" year after all the privations and adverse impacts of the Covid pandemic etc.

As previously recorded the Society remains driven by a number of important principles. We strive to provide the very highest quality of classical music performance in the Glossopdale area; to do so at relatively modest and affordable cost; to ensure inspiration for young people while aspiring to encourage them either to play or sing music and enjoy what classical music brings; and to building new audiences.

Organisational changes

WE are brilliantly supported by an The Artistic Team consisting of four professional musicians: Claire Surman (soprano and Team leader), Rachel Whibley (bassoonist), Ben Powell (pianist and teacher at the RNCM) and Emma Dixon (cellist).

There were changes at trustee level with the retirements or resignations of Helen Bowdur Due to her having retired from her own professional career. Nevertheless she remains as a strong supporter of the Society.

The Board therefore comprises: Michael Bull, Simon Hurrell (Treasurer), Prof. Sam GriffithsJones, Rachel Whibley, Carl Raven and Andy Zuntz. As this report is written two new trustees are in the process of joining the Board to further strengthen the team.

The Artistic and performance programme

During the year the following events took place - with much joy and relief after the hideous intervention of the Covid pandemic.

10 December 2021. A recital given by Sophie Rosa, a brilliant young violinist, Amy Yule, outstanding flautist, and Ben Powell distinguished pianist and accompanist. They played a Bach Sonata for Flute and keyboard, Gaubert's Nocturne and Allegro, the beautiful Massenet Meditation from Thais and a Strauss' Violin Sonata, ending with a short Ibert aria with Claire Surman.

Our recitals though the Winter and Spring are not ticketed. They are free to attend. This is deliberate and a long running practice to enhance accessibility for all and to help towards building new audiences. Children come free to all our concerts except the special educational programme

which we simply cannot provide without assured income. We invite the audiences to donate what they can according to their means and generosity which they invariably do.

13 to 18 June 2022. The Summer Festival.

The Educational programme for Glossopdale schools. There was a stunning programme for young people in schools in association with Carrot Productions. This comprised a series of live and interactive events based around Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" and "The Bear and the Piano" written and illustrated by David Litchfield with music composed by Glossopian Daniel Whibley. Over 500 children from local schools and their teachers enjoyed the programme which we called "Musical Beasts". This began with visits to the schools by the musicians in preparation for the Schools Concerts. The schools also received resource packs, books, and learned a song about Peter complete with Makaton signing and all ahead of the concerts. Each school also had a alive Zoom session with the author and illustrator David Litchfield. The subsequent interactive concerts gave the children the chance to experience world class music live and close up with the ensemble of professional musicians in costume and to talk to them. It all felt very special after the previous two years when musical opportunities had been so restricted. The concert was repeated as a Family Concert so that parents and others could see and experience it. Frankly it was also enormous fun and to see so many children singing and signing the song they had learned was quite thrilling.

The Festival was, and is, very grateful to Carrot Productions and for the generous financial support from the Derbyshire Music Hub and Arts Council England. But also to our corporate sponsors CDL of Stockport, Davis Blank Furniss solicitors, and Capstone Financial Management who all made this possible.

A free informal "pop up" gig in the Pico Lounge, Glossop. This has proved very popular in the past and was repeated. It has the scope to introduce a random audience to classical music in the most informal atmosphere and contributes to both accessibility and potentially new audiences. It was noticeable that some came on from that evening to the later more formal events in the Glossop Parish Church.

A community Choral Workshop for amateur singers. This was a workshop run by the Choral Department of the Hallé with a variety of repertoire including classic choral pieces and contemporary songs. It had been done the previous year and was hugely appreciated by the 60 or so singers who took part. Has been described as "brilliant", "great fun", "really inspiring", "warm and friendly".

Three Concerts on the Friday and Saturday evenings in the Parish Church, Glossop. The first was a recital by piano with our own Vice-President and international soloist Viv McLean and a string octet. They played Richard Strauss (string sextet) and Faure (piano quartet). A delightful refection was from Eva Þórarinsdóttir who led the sextet and commented that of all the places she has played she thought that Glossop was the one she loved playing the most!

The second was a Late Night jazz recital of "Jazz Albums that Shook the World" by the group Triology with Dave Walsh percussionist. This was fascinating and drew a varied audience in which the musicians talked and told stories of musical experiences. Dave Walsh was particularly amusing talking about playing with great jazz artists.

Finally on the Saturday a full orchestral concert led by Eva (see above) and conducted by the extraordinary young French conductor Chloé van Soeterstède. Chloe had audience and players all

excited and admiring. They all produced wonderful performances of Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture, Beethoven's Triple Concerto and rounded off with a exciting performance of Schubert's Symphony No. 5. Afterwards several of the musicians commented that they had not played under Chloe before and eagerly hoped to do so again. She has been booked for 2023!!

Society finances

The financial sustainability of the Society and the Festival remains dependent on several crucial factors. Most of all we are grateful for strong commercial sponsorship and support. This has come through this year but also previously from the loyal commitment of CDL of Stockport (an industry IT giant providing software support to the international insurance industry), David Blank Furniss solicitors of Glossop, and Capstone Financial Management also of Glossop. That support is crucial.

But equally vital is the support the Society gets from the Friends of the Music Festival. So successful was the Festival that several additional Friends were recruited, and they are an enormous encouragement. We record our gratitude to them all for their generosity. They now contribute about £2,700 per annum which can be Gift Aided. We hope they realise that they are making an invaluable contribution to making Glossop and even better place to both live and work.

The Society also incorporated a couple of years ago. This was specifically to enable the Society to take advantage of the Orchestral Tax Relief scheme through which Corporation Tax credits can be claimed in respect of music concerts with an orchestra of more than twelve players which is another financial advantage to the organisation.

The Society has a basic reserve separately invested and kept for any unexpected and unwelcome liabilities and hence this sum is regarded as a prudent reserve not to be touched, ideally. However, the Society does not own any assets which might create such situations so we hope that is sensible level of protection.

The year started with a balance of working funds of £11,000 and finished with a balance of £12,000. The trustees feel they have sound foundations on which to build for the future and to support the ambitions of our Artistic Team. But we know we will need more financial support to develop further and more help would help us do more things. We are nevertheless hopeful of achieving that.

Conclusion

We believe the Festival is in a sound place driven by our guiding principles. We are proud to support professional musicians and provide performance opportunities while making a significant contribution to enhancing the cultural "offer" to Glossop and the surrounding area. We look forward with optimism and ambition.
