1. Vicar’s Report

Rev’d Paul Neville, Vicar’s Report to the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) Sunday 25th April 2021

Following Jesus, Serving our Community.

Welcome to Holy Trinity with St Mark APCM, and thank you to those joining us here today and those following online.

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting - (APCM) is a legal requirement when the PCC present financial accounts and reports from all departments of our Church, and where we are reminded of our purpose and calling as the Church in this community that is…

The Church is called to be pastoral – to look after the individual people; to be evangelistic – to tell people the Good News and invite them to accept it; to be social – to help the poorer members of society, and those suffering from racial, economic and other forms of injustice; and to be ecumenical – to encourage good relations with other Christian denominations.

This year’s report will stand out like no other we have ever had to produce. However, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect together as we look back over the past year, which has been unprecedented for the church, our country and the world. The Covid -19 pandemic forced us to change almost every aspect of our lives and put restrictions on our liberties that have not been seen since the Second World War. In March 2020 a lockdown was imposed on our country, schools, hotels, restaurants, and just about everywhere else people gather including the church.

Church-life has a momentum that gathers over many years, with the input and work of many people. Those people are the servants of the church, making that momentum nourishing and also vital for the wider community to thrive. Our mission here at Holy Trinity is to ‘Follow Jesus and serve our community’. When the deadly Covid19 impacted on our lives, which took some of our loved ones, we all found ourselves having to stay at home to protect each other and ourselves. No-one could have guessed a year ago that we would still be doing it.

1

During the past year, despite the threat of infection and the closing of the church, we managed to do several important things in response.

Firstly, we needed to find a way of being in regular communication with the whole church family. We did this through email, news letters delivered by team members and the setting up of a What’s App church group, which attracted around 90 church members.

Holy Trinity with St Mark

It was remarkable to see so many of our church members tackling the challenges of online meetings, such as Zoom, Facebook and What’s App and the new challenge of online worship and prayer. I must mention at this point my gratitude to both Margaret Blake and David Patterson who have relentlessly provided music each Sunday for our online worship. I have been so blessed to see the determination of you all in getting to grips with social media and IT devices. In addition, the clear deepening of faith and of relationships was an unexpected blessing. The unity in the spirit, under restricted movement somehow has enabled our love for one another to deepen. I feel that we have learnt afresh what the church is for and what we mean to each other. Every time I made an appeal for help in the delivery of flowers, cakes, Advent goody bags, notice sheets or anything else, we had an amazing response. We have truly pulled together, and continue to do so. We have learned that what we had before March 2020 was precious, possibly took it for granted. We have now a newfound appreciation for each other, our faith and life itself.

We have lost some from our church family during this difficult time, I can’t mention them here but we all know who they are.

I want to thank our churchwardens – Barbara Porritt and Gemma Robson, supported by Barry Winter and Ivor Cassell, for everything they have done in helping me to adjust and enable the church to function in a new way under Covid regulations.

Thank you to Doreen Crinson for her role as PCC secretary, and for Sue Gordon and the way that she has continued to keep our church administration running.

Many of you will already know that the Pandemic has made a devastating impact on church finances. I have shared this very serious matter with those of you who join me online and What’s App. The annual accounts, which you can see, speak for themselves. The overall annual income of 2020 is down by

approximately 60%. We had to draw monies from our reserves to pay our financial commitments; those reserves are now no longer available to us. I made a number of appeals to the wider church family for a review of giving, which has improved somewhat but not significantly so. I have had the blessing of working closely with Mike Blake and Sue Gordon who have almost worked miracles in managing to reduce our outgoings to help ease the pressure.

The diocesan board of finance agreed to our request to reduce our parish share giving to enable us to make ends meet. I am deeply grateful for the support of the Archdeacon and the deanery clergy.

This aspect has been a very heavy burden, one which I have shared with you all as much as I can because this is our church, you’re part of it and you cherish it and what being the church means to us. We are a long way from turning the corner financially, even though we may be seeing the corner turning where the Coronavirus is concerned. It may take years to get to a less vulnerable place. It is in this regard that I appeal yet again to those who may not have had the chance to review their giving to do so as soon as is practicable, and I include myself in this with you.

I want to thank those of you that responded so quickly and generously to the appeal for more giving; bless you, and I know that God will bless you too.

Holy Trinity with St Mark

In May 2020 our Youth Leader Madi was furloughed; like so many people she couldn’t fulfil her ministry to our young people. In August Madi resigned her post for a new post in Stokesley. Thank you Madi for all that you did whilst you were here with us. I. like you, have been acutely aware of the impact this has had on our children and young people, but they have blessed us all in the way they have shared their home worship, birthday celebrations and just being part of us. Well done, you are all amazing.

Boomerang was deeply impacted by Covid restrictions too, like so many organisations. Many of our staff were either partly or fully furloughed, depending on how the virus figures were reported. It has been another example of tenacity, faith and commitment from Jo and our lovely staff that has enabled Boomerang to survive so far. Our numbers dropped to an impossible figure that prevented us from opening even when we could. Jo and the team, with the support from the management team, Barbara Burns, Barry Winter, Jo Ford-Leadbeater and me, have done everything we could to navigate through these unknown waters.

So, we must continue in faith and hope towards a Covid-free future now that a vaccine is being rolled out across the world. Together we pray for the church to

re-emerge with a new sense of purpose in mission, prayer, worship and in service. As a church we can sense the real and true blessing of learning just how precious being the church is in the first instance.

We have re-discovered a new and real sense of appreciation for each other and a deepened love of God. This is what we must not lose, we have indeed been in a kind of exile, but we must keep hold of all that God has taught us, shown us and enabled in us as we move forward into a new normal life together.

Thank you to our wonderful church family who have supported each other through the most difficult time we have ever seen.

We were reminded last Christmas that ‘God is with us’ - Immanuel. That has proven to be true for each and every one of us.

Throughout the pandemic I have constantly reminded myself of Psalm 46:10 which says…. “ Be Still and Know that I Am God!”

Thank you all once again for being a blessing to me and to Christine, during the never forgotten year, which was 2020.

Peace and Joy

Annual Parochial Church Meeting (APCM) 25th October 2020

Minutes of the Annual Parochial Church Meeting - held on 31[st] March 2019 were approved and signed.

Rev’d Paul thanked the PCC, also Jo Ford-Leadbeater Manager of Boomerang Child Care and her Team. Rev’d Paul also thanked Sue Gordon, our Parish Administrator for all her hard work over the past year and to all involved in the smooth running of the Church. Madi Whaley our Youth Pastor, has moved to a new job in Stokesley, and we wish her continued success. The GDPR Policy was implemented in 2018.

Thanks go to Rev’d John Hearn for his assistance throughout the year.

Claire Himsworth is Chair of Governors of Holy Trinity School. We normally operate a 3 year rotation of the PCC but this year has been very different with Covid-19 putting a stop to our usual live meetings and continuing with on line Zoom Meetings. This means our current PCC will stay in place and next year we will continue with the 3 year rotation.

Eb and Kelly Adekunle expressed an interest in joining the PCC, therefore it was decided to elect them at this meeting.

The PCC are in need of a Safeguarding Officer since Michelle Hill has resigned due to work commitments. Kelly Adekunle indicated she would be interested in doing the Safeguarding Officers job. Christine Neville offered to help Kelly if she needed any help with Safeguarding.

It was proposed by Gemma Robson, seconded by Barry Winter that Kelly Adekunle be the Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO).

All were in favour.

Kelly will need to do safeguarding training, Beth Miller will be contacted to arrange for Kelly to complete the required training.

Election of Deanery Synod Representatives :- Ivor Cassell and Tony Stewart have confirmed they would like to continue on Deanery Synod. There have been no Deanery Synod meetings since early 2020.

Presentation of Accounts: - The PCC ratified the accounts at their PCC meeting for them to be presented to the APCM. At present the finances are not going in the right direction, with the present restrictions in place at this time.

It was proposed the annual accounts be accepted, proposed by Gill Clark and

seconded by Tony Stewart. All were in agreement.

Church Report

It is hoped the APCM next will be held in April 2021. There have been a few challenges in 2020. In our church there is a great sense of team work.

Who would have thought in December 2019 that we would have to worship via Zoom and wear masks in 2020.

Rev. Paul is still concerned about the giving in church, our Parish Share has had to be reduced as we couldn’t meet our commitment. These are constant issues being dealt with to enable the church to continue to meet all commitments.

The children’s work is essential and we have lottery funding to help with that. The children are our church future.

9

Election of Treasurer & Secretary. Tony Stewart proposed Mike Blake for Treasurer, seconded by Malcolm Porritt. All were in favour.

Barbara Porritt proposed Doreen Crinson for Secretary, seconded by Kathryn Kennedy. All were in favour.

The meeting closed after prayers were said.

5. PCC Secretary’s Report

This year of 2020 has been a year with a difference, the first 3 months of the year we held live PCC Meetings. We followed with 5 PCC Meetings held via Zoom (on line),

with discussion on various subjects, mainly on Church Opening and Closing and how Covid19 has effected everyone.

We look forward to the time we can all meet together.

6. Church Warden’s Report

I was due to become church warden in April 2020 but due to Covid19 we closed the church and started to stream our services online.

We were saddened to close our doors but discovered a new way of communicating with each other. We started a What’s App group to connect as many people as we could, meaning we could share information and celebrate each other (and our gardens) lifting spirits and praying for each other.

We celebrated special occasions by giving our congregation gifts, flowers, cakes and Christmas treats on their doorsteps.

We briefly opened our doors again in October and welcomed 30 people to our Sunday services. It was a delight to be back inside the building and see some familiar faces. Although we couldn't sing together sharing communion and praying together felt precious. Unfortunately, due to further restrictions, we made the decision to close again before Christmas.

10

In November I finally got sworn in via zoom as church warden of our church and I am looking forward to fulfilling my role when church can finally open again safely with the support of Rev Paul, Barbara and Barry. Forever blessed.

7 Chair of Governor’s Report – Holy Trinity Rosehill C of E Primary School

2020 started with Mrs Whelerton, our Deputy Head Teacher, joining our school and leadership team. She has brought enthusiasm, passion and commitment to our school. As a result of the global pandemic, in March 2020 school had to close to all children apart from children of key workers and our vulnerable children. Our school remained open to these children throughout the Easter break and through to the May half term break. Leaders and staff worked incredibly hard to meet the needs of these children and to keep each other safe.

In June 2020 schools were asked to welcome back children in Nursery, Reception, Year One and Year Six, however this was not possible due to the high numbers of children of key workers and vulnerable children who were in school. September saw the full reopening of school and all children came back to school. Our two new assistant headteachers Mrs Atkinson and Mrs Thomas began their roles in September bringing additional strength to our existing leadership team. Throughout the autumn term only one bubble closed for 14 days and school closed for two days in November due to staff testing positive. Collective worship went online in 2020 and was delivered by staff, children and our friends from Stockton Baptist Church, the Salvation Army and the Methodist Church. Two of our children have joined the National Young Leaders group for the Church of England looking at the Church of England’s mission to grow younger.

11

2020 was a year like no other for everyone at Holy Trinity Rosehill Primary School. However throughout this time the commitment of staff, the understanding of parents and carers, the support of governors and the smiles of children have continued despite the challenging circumstances.

We have felt God’s presence during these incredibly challenging times and we continue to pray that he will be with us whatever the coming months bring.

9. Cafe Church Report

Cafe Church is an informal family service for all ages, usually held on the 1[st] Sunday of each month from 5pm to 6pm.

Last year in 2020 we only had 3 services due to the national lockdown, January to March and 2 families attended each service.

We begin by sharing food and a drink, and having a chat, so coming a little late is not a problem. We sing some hymns, (some with actions), listen to a story, then enjoy some craft activities and play games. We finish our service with some short prayers which the children love to read.

Thank you to all who come and help with the service.

10. Boomerang Report

Due to Corona Virus Boomerang was closed for 4 months reopening in the summer holidays ready for when the schools closed.

We reopened for everyone in September but was quickly hit by another lock down in November which we worked through then again in Jan 2021 where we had to close the before and afterschool sessions. Preschool remained open for all Early Years children as guided by the government.

Lots of things have changed over the past year for the children who attend Boomerang.

At present no parents or visitors are allowed into the setting which means drop off and pick up is done at the door. The children in the church hall are split into groups to maintain ‘bubbles’

We encourage personal hygiene before and after each activity and reinforce catch it, bin it, kill it, along with good hand washing techniques.

Our new cleaning procedures are very lengthy.

The outdoor space is used daily as normal but the children play outside in their small groups.

We have had to restrict the numbers we take for before and after school sessions.

But we are pleased to say the children have adapted to all these changes very well.

We have paid tribute to all the key workers making thank you cards and displaying posters the children had created and continued to make the children’s’ time with us as ‘normal’ and enriching as possible under very difficult circumstances.

On 16[th] October Ofsted carried out an interim visit. The focus of the visit was to check whether we had met the safeguarding and welfare actions raised at their last inspection. They found we had improved our knowledge and understanding of child protection procedures and now fully understand our responsibilities with regards to the changes to be notified to Ofsted, including changes to committee members. In addition, the promotion of children’s good behaviour is now consistently implemented into practice and as a result children are well behaved.

They were satisfied we had met the safeguarding and welfare actions raised. We are still registered with Ofsted.

13. Magazine Report

Last year was a strange one in many ways. We were able to get the January/February and March/April magazines out before lockdown, then none until in November I produced the January/February 2021 issue. I did this early so that after it was printed and delivered from the printers I could keep it for two weeks, keeping to the Covid guidelines. I counted them out for the schools a week before delivery to them all full of hope etc., but within a day the schools were closed again so the magazines only went out to a few children. However they were delivered by hand to all the electoral roll and many more. Thank you to all the ‘messengers’. Hopefully, later in the year we will be able to start again.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the magazine, remember it is only as good as the material received, SO keep writing those articles and sending them to me either in script or email. I don’t mind either because I do like to keep my fingers agile!

Last November Jean Story said she would like to step down from doing the advertisements and collecting receipts. She has been doing this for (I won’t say how many years) and has done sterling work. She gave me her notebook with the information in November and I thanked her myself but feel we should all say thank you for her hard work.

I have contacted all the advertisers and apart from two, they are all willing to support us again. We also have one new one. I will invoice them when the magazine is up and running again.

Thank you for your support.

14. Music Report

The Choir led the hymn singing during the services of January, February and the beginning of March 2020. The Music Group led worship on family Sundays. We have been unable to meet since that time. 16. Trinity Tots Report

We began after our Christmas break on the first Tuesday in January and had our normal sessions on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings until half term in February. We then managed three weeks in March until lockdown began.

Our Mums and childminders often stayed for lunch on Thursday bringing together the young and more senior customers at Generate together. I continued to make bacon "butties" to raise money for Kiera to go to Lesotho but as with everything else that too was not possible.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back when lockdown eases, though some of the children will have moved onto nursery or school.

Thank you team for your support and hopefully we'll be together again soon .

17. Youth Ministry

On a Friday evening it is a joy to welcome over 40 children to our youth club in church.

You can see the excitement on the faces of the children as they share some time together out of school with the responsibility of buying their own sweets.

Madi and Matt were there to play games, have fun and share the word of the Bible.

The children would leave feeling supported, tired and ready for the weekend.

Matt had a really short time with us in 2020 but he had time to shine for our children and tell them his stories and experiences.

Madi has been the most precious person to our children. Over the last 3 years she listened, played and preached with hundreds of our children through school, ignite and camp of champions. Unfortunately Madi left us this year to follow her calling with youth for Christ. She will be sadly missed and she has a place in all of our hearts.

We had to close in March in line with the Government guidelines but we look forward to the future when we can reopen ignite again and welcome our children back into church.
