FRAZZLED CAFE MEETINGS PROVIDE A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE WHO ARE FEELING FRAZZLED CAN MEET TO TALK AND SHARE THEIR STORIES. OUR MEETINGS CREATE A SUPPORTIVE, ANONYMOUS, AND NON-JUDGEMENTAL ENVIRONMENT – A PLACE WHERE IT IS OK TO NOT BE OK.

**Frazzled Cafe really is invaluable - sometimes I literally have no one else to talk to or share my news with. It helps so much with my isolation. I'm very grateful it exists.**

BEFORE THE PANDEMIC HIT IN THE SPRING OF 2020, WE HELD IN-PERSON MEETINGS IN MARKS AND SPENCERS CAFES AND OTHER PARTNER VENUES ACROSS THE UK.

ONCE LOCKDOWN WAS IN PLACE, WE MOVED ALL OF OUR MEETINGS ONLINE, OFFERING VIRTUAL MEETINGS OVER ZOOM.

FRAZZLED CAFE MEETINGS ARE NOT ABOUT THERAPY OR OFFERING SOLUTIONS. THEY PROVIDE A SAFE AND CONFIDENTIAL SPACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN SPEAK OPENLY WITHOUT WORRYING ABOUT JUDGEMENT AMONGST A GROUP OF PEERS WHO UNDERSTAND HOW IT FEELS TO BE FRAZZLED.

**WHAT IS SAID IN THE MEETINGS STAYS IN THE MEETINGS.**

## **SUPPORT SERVICES**

PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC, THE MAJORITY OF FRAZZLED CAFE MEETINGS FOR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WERE HOSTED FORTNIGHTLY IN MARKS & SPENCER CAFES. THESE MEETINGS TYPICALLY TOOK PLACE AFTER HOURS WHEN THE CAFE WAS CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC, BUT THE MAIN STORE REMAINED OPEN.

EACH MEETING LASTED UP TO 90 MINUTES WITH A BREAK FOR TEA / COFFEE, AND WAS OVERSEEN BY A TRAINED FACILITATOR. UP TO 12 PEOPLE COULD ATTEND A MEETING AND ATTENDEES WERE TYPICALLY A DIVERSE MIX OF MEN AND WOMEN OF ALL AGES AND LIFE EXPERIENCES.

THE ARRIVAL OF COVID-19 IN THE SPRING OF 2020 MEANT WE COULD NO LONGER MEET FACE-TO-FACE SO WE MOVED ALL OF OUR MEETINGS ONLINE AND BROUGHT ON HOSTS TO COMPLEMENT THE SERVICES PROVIDED BY OUR PRE-EXISTING FACILITATORS.

BOTH TYPES OF MEETINGS START WITH SET GUIDELINES BEING READ OUT TO ESTABLISH GROUND RULES AND SET EXPECTATIONS FOR THE MEETING, AND THE MEETING IS BOOKENDED WITH A MINDFULNESS EXERCISE.

9.

## **SUPPORT SERVICES**

ACROSS 2023, WE HELD 592 MEETINGS FOR AN AVERAGE OF 293 ATTENDEES PER MONTH (3,510 ACROSS THE YEAR), WHO MADE 8,678 BOOKINGS ACROSS THE YEAR.

# **592 meetings 293 people per month**

**3,510 attendees 8,678 bookings**

## **SUPPORT SERVICES**

WE ALSO HAVE REGULAR MEETINGS HOSTED BY RUBY WAX. THESE MEETINGS ARE FAR LARGER THAN OUR DAY TO DAY FRAZZLED CAFE FACILITATOR MEETINGS AND AE FOR UP TO AROUND 100 PEOPLE.

**I am grateful for having Frazzled - it has really helped and supported me for a long time.**

WE DO NOT CHARGE PEOPLE TO ATTEND MEETINGS AND THEY ARE OPEN TO ANYONE OVER 18 YEARS OF AGE, ALTHOUGH WE DO SPECIFY THAT MEETINGS MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR INDIVIDUALS CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING SEVERE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AS THEY ARE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED AS AN EARLY INTERVENTION MODEL TO PROVIDE PEER SUPPORT, AND NOT THERAPY.

## **SUPPORT SERVICES**

AS PART OF OUR SAFEGUARDING MEASURES, WE HAVE ESTABLISHED A ROBUST VOLUNTEER FACILITATOR RECRUITMENT PROCESS AND TRAINING PROGRAM, AND IDENTIFIED THE TWO DAY MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID ENGLAND COURSE AS A CORE COMPONENT THAT OUR VOLUNTEER FACILITATORS ARE EXPECTED TO UNDERTAKE IF THEY DO NOT ALREADY HAVE EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE.

WE COMPLEMENT OUR OFFER OF FRAZZLED CAFE MEETINGS WITH ADDITIONAL EVENTS, FOCUSING ON MINDFULNESS, AND OUR WEBSITE WHICH CONTAINS INFORMATION & SIGNPOSTING TO FURTHER SERVICES FOR THOSE FEELING A BIT MORE THAN FRAZZLED.

## **FACE-TO-FACE MEETINGS**

WE HAVE RESUMED SOME FACE-TO-FACE MEETINGS AS PART OF OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HARPENDEN TRUST, A CHARITABLE TRUST OPERATING FOR THE GREATER GOOD OF THE RESIDENTS OF HARPENDEN. IN CONJUNCTION WITH THEM, WE HAVE DESIGNED A PROGRAM WHERE WE TRAIN AND SUPPORT PEOPLE LOCALLY TO BECOME FACILITATORS AND DELIVER THE MEETINGS FACE-TO-FACE FOR PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA.

THIS IS AN EXCITING PIECE OF WORK THAT WE HOPE WE CAN THEN REPLICATE IN OTHER PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, AS WELL AS CONTINUING TO OFFER OUR MEETINGS ONLINE FOR ANYONE TO ATTEND.

## **SUPPORT SERVICES**

THE HARPENDEN TRUST PARTNERED WITH FRAZZLED CAFÉ IN 2021 TO DELIVER WEEKLY FACE TO FACE MEETINGS. THE HARPENDEN TRUST IS A COMMUNITY TRUST SUPPORTING THEIR LOCAL AREA. FRAZZLED CAFÉ’S RUN WEEKLY ON MONDAYS 6:45 – 8:00PM, DELIVERED ON ROTATION BY FOUR TRAINED FACILITATORS. FACILITATORS ARE SUPPORTED BY ‘HOSTS’ WHO WELCOME ATTENDEES WITH DRINKS AND SUPPORT THEM TO SETTLE INTO THE MEETING.

HARPENDEN FRAZZLED CAFES ARE WELL ATTENDED WITH AN AVERAGE OF 8 ATTENDEES AT EACH MEETING. ATTENDEES HAVE BUILT ONGOING FRIENDSHIPS, ARRANGING COFFEE MORNINGS OUTSIDE OF MEETINGS AND SUPPORTING EACH OTHER THROUGH CHALLENGING TIMES. SOME HAVE BEEN ATTENDING SINCE THE FIRST MEETING, AND OTHERS ARE NEW FACES TO THE MEETINGS. ENSURING THAT THE SPACE REMAINS INCLUSIVE AND SUPPORTIVE FOR NEWCOMERS.

AFTER THE DEPARTURE OF ONE VOLUNTEER WHO HAS BEEN FACILITATING SESSIONS FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS, WE ARE NOW RECRUITING AND ONBOARDING A NEW FACILITATOR AND HOST IN COLLABORATION WITH THE HARPENDEN TRUST.

ON A RECENT SITE VISIT, AN ATTENDEE SHARED FEEDBACK WITH OUR TEAM **“** _**PLEASE FEEDBACK HOW THANKFUL I AM FOR FRAZZLED CAFE. IT IS A GREAT IDEA. THANK YOU FOR CREATING FRAZZLED CAFE.”**_

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

**2023 TOTAL INCOME £146,948**

**TOTAL EXPENDITURE £126,986**

**FREE RESERVES £154,577**

FREE RESERVES AS of 31ST DECEMBER 2023 ARE £154,577. THE TRUSTEES CONTINUE TO STRIVE TO BUILD A GENERAL LEVEL OF RESERVES SO THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE THE CURRENT ACTIVITIES OF THE CHARITY.

THE TOTAL INCOME FOR THE YEAR WAS £146,948, OF WHICH £157 WAS GENERATED FROM TRADING ACTIVITIES SUCH AS TICKET, SALES AND MERCHANDISE, AND £146,791 FROM DONATIONS AND FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

TOTAL EXPENDITURE WAS £126,986 OF WHICH £126,986 WAS EXPENDED ON DIRECT CHARITABLE ACTIVITIES.

THE BALANCE Of TOTAL FUNDS AT THE YEAR END WAS £154,577 OF WHICH £154,577 WERE GENERAL UNRESTRICTED FUNDS.

THE TRUSTEES CONSIDER IT PRUDENT TO HOLD MONIES IN RESERVE IN THE EVENT THAT UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD LEAD TO FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES, WHICH MIGHT PUT THE FUTURE OF ITS EMPLOYMENT CAPACITY, USERS’ WELL-BEING, AND GENERAL CHARITABLE WORK IN JEOPARDY.

THIS HAS NEVER BEEN MORE NEEDED WHEN THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 MEANT THAT MANY CHARITIES FOUND THEMSELVES IN DIRE SITUATIONS.

IN THIS UNFORESEEN CONTEXT, FRAZZLED CAFE HAS BEEN ABLE TO CONTINUE TO OFFER OUR RANGE OF SERVICES, ALBEIT IN AN ALTERED FORMAT AND REMAIN FINANCIALLY SECURE.

## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2023**

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2023. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015).

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Objectives and aims**

Support Services: Frazzled Café Meetings provide a place where people who are feeling frazzled can meet to talk and share their stories.

Our meetings create a supportive anonymous and non-judgmental environment, a place where its ok not to be ok.

Before the coronavirus situation hit in the Spring of 2020. We held in-person meetings in Marks and Spencer and other partner venues across the UK. Once lockdown was in place, we moved all of our meetings online, offering virtual meetings over Zoom.

Frazzled Café meetings are not about therapy or offering solutions, they provide a safe and confidential space where people can speak openly without worrying about judgment amongst a group of peers who understand how it feels to be frazzled. What is said in the meetings stays in the meetings.

Prior to the pandemic, the majority of Frazzled Café meetings for members of the public were hosted fortnightly in Marks and Spencer Cafes. These meetings typically took place after hours when the cafe was closed to the public, but the main store remained open, each meeting lasted up to 90 minutes with a break for tea/coffee and was overseen by a trained facilitator. Up to 12 people could attend a meeting and attendees were typically a diverse mix of men and women of all ages and life experiences.

The arrival of COVID-19 in the spring of 2020 meant we could no longer meet face-to-face, so we moved all of our meetings online and brought on hosts to complement the services provided by our pre-existing facilitators. Facilitator meetings last for an hour and are for up to 17 people.

Our meetings start with set guidelines being read out to establish ground rules and set expectations for the meeting and are book-ended with mindfulness exercises.

## **Public benefit**

A key factor in helping to overcome feelings of stress and anxiety is knowing that we are not alone and this is most powerfully felt when meeting with others and connecting. Contact with others has been proven to stimulate production of Oxytocin; believed to underpin the link between social contact and healthy hearts. Research has also shown that peersupport groups yield improvements in psychiatric symptoms resulting in enhanced self-esteem and social functioning.

National research findings also indicate that the best way to beat stress is to share our feelings, and sharing with someone in the same situation typically yields the best results. The opportunity to do this is often lacking in our society where the pressure to live a life crammed to the hilt is considered a success story and yet many people struggle with the pressures and are afraid to admit it.

Frazzled Cafe meetings provide a platform to address this by giving people the opportunity to connect and share their personal stories in a safe and nonjudgmental environment, with people experiencing similar challenges. By providing a relaxed and welcoming forum for people to be open about their mental wellbeing we also hope to help reduce the stigma that many people still feel exists around discussing their mental health.

The Trustees have paid due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit in deciding the activities undertaken during the year.

## **ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities**

Across 2023, we held 592 meetings for an average of 293 attendees per month (3,510 across the year), who made 8,678 bookings across the year.

We also have regular meetings hosted by Ruby Wax, these are far larger than our day to day Frazzled Café facilitator meetings.
