The main activity will always be the day to day care of the sheep and goats that reside at the rescue.
Visits from Special Educational Needs schools continue and will be developed as applicable.
Other activities include:

Providing advice and guidance to both the public and third-party organisations on issues relating to sheep and goats;

Investigating welfare concerns reported to the charity;
Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

Reporting welfare issues to the relevant authorities, i.e. DEFRA, Environment Agency, Trading Standards;

Highlighting to the public the welfare issues that affect sheep and goats;

Educating the public on how sheep and goats should be cared for and kept;

Taking in sheep and goats that have been brought to the rescue needing urgent care;

Helping to rehome sheep and goats if the charity itself cannot take them;

Holding events where the public can interact with the animals and educating them on sheep and goat welfare issues. This also allows people to meet the animals when otherwise they would not get the opportunity;

Priority will always go to animals in need through neglect.
Fundraising is an essential activity as otherwise the charity could not run.

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Sheep Ahoy Animal Rescue has been a Registered Charity for seven years and this trustee report covers the period 5[th ] April 2023 to 5[th] April 2024.
This financial year ended with the charity outgoings being greater than its income and the reasons for this will be reported on. Monies from the deposit account were able to cover the deficit without affecting the primary objective of the savings which is to use the funds to purchase land.
The charity received two large donations towards its land purchase fund from two kind sponsors which added £25000 to the pot. Gift Aid of £6,250 was claimed on these donations which allowed a total of £31,250 to be deposited and allocated as reserved funds for the future.
The other main income came from fundraising events held at Sheep Ahoy and these included an Open Day, an Afternoon Tea, Yoga with the sheep and other local events where charity volunteers ran stalls. The overall funds raised from events is down on last year as only one actual Open Day was run at Sheep Ahoy due to a lack of available resources.
A grant of £1000 was received from the Tesco Groundworks scheme.
Fundraising via social media continues to be successful and supporters have responded positively to charity appeals for funds to pay for veterinary treatments for specific sheep.
It should be noted, that public events are not just to raise funds but to fulfil an objective of the charity which is to educate the public in the needs and welfare requirements of both sheep and goats. This is achieved in a relaxed environment which is enjoyed by both the visitors and the residents of Sheep Ahoy.
The overall expenses of the charity remained comparable to the previous year. There was an increase in field rental costs but a decrease in veterinary fees. The reason for the latter was due to the majority of the rehabilitation care needed for new sheep joining the rescue being undertaken by the Sheep Ahoy carers themselves and not by the vets. The sheep requiring considerable care was Angel who came into rescue with her two lambs Sooty and Sweep.
There are always new sheep needing a place at the charity due to neglect or health issues but existing residents pass away too. Veterinary fees also cover the cost of euthanising sheep who are at the end of their life and to relieve suffering as well as the cost of any treatment new residents need to rehabilitate them in addition to any ongoing treatment required.
This year sanctuary places were given to Biscuit, Missy, Larry, Noah, Angel, Sooty, Sweep … and Lucy, who had come into Sanctuary during the year, and went on to have two lambs Lily and Luca.
Unfortunately, our elderly Robyn, passed away during the year and we sadly lost Dobby after an ongoing battle to overcome his overshot jaw and his eating issues which became much worse as he grew.

with volunteers repairing shelters to keep them in use.
The aim of the charity has always been to secure a permanent location for the sheep and this has now been achieved with the support of a major donor. The donations from the donor has allowed the charity to purchase 5 acres of local land and this is why the deposit account balance has reduced and the charity is now recording an asset of £100,000. The high cost of land in the South East of England and the lack of available suitable grazing land to purchase means that the money spent was justifiable to allow the charity to put down permanent roots. The land is being prepared during 2024/2025 and will be home to a large number of the sheep ahoy family.
The charity is receiving more calls than ever from the public who are concerned about the welfare of sheep they come across in fields. If the location is local to Sheep Ahoy a member of the team will attend with a view to assessing the condition of the sheep, and if necessary, to contact the relevant welfare organisation or government body. If the sheep are not local then a member of the team will advise the caller on what action to take and support them through the process.
The charity receives rehoming requests on a regular basis from sheep and goat owners who can no longer care for their animals. Sheep Ahoy has limited resources and if the animals involved are healthy the charity will work with the owners and a network of other people across the country to find suitable homes. This is called ‘Direct Rehoming’ as the animals do not physically come into the rescue but move from their original home to their new home with the help of the charity.
The charity continued to work with local Special Educational Needs schools whereby pupils are brought to meet the sheep accompanied by a member of school staff. The aim being to allow the pupils to engage with the sheep in a relaxed environment where they are away from everyday life. Pupils with high anxiety related issues find that their time with the sheep allows them to relax. The pupils can help with chores, feed the sheep or just sit with them in an outdoor environment and take in the fresh air. This has proved to be a positive experience for the SEN pupils and is something that the charity will continue to support and develop.

The project the ‘Restricted Funds’ were allocated to was the purchase of land for the charity to set up as its main site and this was achieved in this financial year.
The balance of funds has been allocated to pay for the land to now be fenced.

No salaries are paid, all work is voluntary.
The charity investment policy is driven by a need to follow an ethical approach and, as such, the Co-Operative Bank continues to be used to fulfil both the banking and savings needs of the charity.

One of the achievements of the charity has been working with a local special educational needs school whereby pupils visit the sheep resulting in a positive benefit to the pupil’s mental health. The school have put this into context in the following feedback to the charity:
‘Pupils at Laleham Gap School who participate in the Sheep Ahoy programme benefit immensely from being in a relaxing natural environment, an experience they might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy.
This exposure is fantastic for our pupils’ mental health and well-being. It offers them the chance to learn about the care required for rescued animals, some of which have additional needs.
The program includes learning about a sheep’s diet, what to feed them, and what they should avoid eating. Pupils also learn to conduct field checks to ensure the sheep are healthy or identify if they need specialist care. This hands-on experience is excellent for building the pupils’ self-esteem and fostering their independence.
Learning about the life cycle of animals provides valuable educational insights and helps pupils develop a deeper understanding of nature and empathy for living creatures. Additionally, the various activities and responsibilities involved in caring for the sheep help build the pupils’ resilience by teaching them patience, responsibility, and problem-solving skills.
Our pupils often comment on how they love the gentle nature of the sheep and how interacting with them makes them feel good about themselves.’

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have examiner's statement come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
