Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Sheep Ahoy Animal Rescue has been a Registered Charity for six years and this trustee report covers the period 5[th ] April 2022 to 5[th] April 2023. The last financial year ended with charity outgoings being greater than its income but this year has been more positive with unreserved funds covering all costs. The charity also received a large donation of £56,000 towards its land purchase fund from a kind sponsor. Gift Aid of £14,000 was successfully claimed on the donation which allowed a total of £70,000 to be deposited and allocated as reserved funds for the charity to purchase land in the future.

The charity had been eligible for Gift Aid since becoming registered but the income from this had been minor until this year when Gift Aid claims were backdated and almost £6,000 was claimed. These backdated claims helped fund the ongoing costs of looking after the animals.

The other main income came from fundraising events which included two Open Days at Sheep Ahoy and four local events where charity volunteers ran stalls.

Dover District Council gave the charity £1685 as part of their Community Grant scheme. This money was gratefully received and has been allocated as reserved funds ready to purchase mobile toilet facilities to use at events and for visitors in general.

Fundraising via social media continues to be successful although the negative economic climate has affected the income generated by this kind of online event in general. The Bonus Ball fundraising initiative was discontinued as it unfortunately proved less popular as time went on and did not warrant the work involved in running it. It should be noted, that public events are not just to raise funds but to fulfil an objective of the charity which is to educate the public in the needs and welfare requirements of both sheep and goats. This is achieved in a relaxed environment which is enjoyed by both the visitors and the residents of Sheep Ahoy.

The expenses of the charity continued to rise this year with increases in rents paid for grazing and in feed costs once again. Veterinary fees and healthcare costs are unfortunately much higher than in the previous year. This is due to two main reasons, the first being a general increase in medicine costs and vet fees, and secondly due to the number of animals requiring veterinary care. There are always new sheep needing a place at the charity due to neglect or health issues but existing residents pass away too. Veterinary fees cover the cost of euthanising sheep who are at the end of their life and to relieve suffering but also cover the cost of any treatment new residents need to rehabilitate them in addition to any ongoing treatment required.

This year sanctuary places were given to Dobby, George, Lucy, and Billy, Janey and Jenny, the latter coming in as a group of 3 sheep who had been rescued by a kind couple from a life of neglect.

Unfortunately, Ruby and Bobby, May, Valentine and Toby all passed away during the year. Ruby, Bobby and May being old sheep but Valentine and Toby being young boys but with life affecting conditions.

Repairs and renewals were done as cheaply but effectively as possible and so this expense is less than usual.

The charity is receiving more calls than ever from the public who are concerned about the welfare of sheep they come across in fields. If the location is local to Sheep Ahoy a member of the team will attend with a view to assessing the condition of the sheep, and if necessary, to contact the relevant welfare organisation or government body. If the sheep are not local then a member of the team will advise the caller on what action to take and support them through the process.

The charity receives rehoming requests on a regular basis from sheep and goat owners who can no longer care for their animals. Sheep Ahoy has limited resources and if the animals involved are healthy the charity will work with the owners and a network of other people across the country to find suitable homes. This is called ‘Direct Rehoming’ as the animals do not physically come into the rescue but move from their original home to their new home with the help of the charity.

The charity continued to work with local Special Educational Needs schools whereby pupils are brought to meet the sheep accompanied by a member of school staff. The aim being to allow the pupils to engage with the sheep in a relaxed environment where they are away from everyday life. Pupils with high anxiety related issues find that their time with the sheep allows them to relax. The pupils can help with chores, feed the sheep or just sit with them in an outdoor environment and take in the fresh air. This has proved to be a positive experience for the SEN pupils and is something that the charity will continue to support and develop.
