Appendix 2
The trustees of the Charity having had due regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit (including but not limited to the Commission's guidance on "Public benefit: the public benefit requirement" (PB1)) in the planning of the Charity's activities, the Charity has carried out the following key activities during the relevant period, in each case for the public benefit and towards the advancement of the Charity's charitable objects:
Free advisory support to "Hankyoreh" North Korean Saturday School
In the furtherance of the Charity's object to provide facilities and support for refugee and asylum seekers from North Korea who have need of such facilities due to their youth, financial hardship and/or social circumstances, the Charity is continuing to provide free advisory support to "Hankyoreh" North Korean Saturday School in order to help the Saturday School to apply to be a registered charity, so that the School can obtain third party funding more easily once it registers as a charity. This is continuing the work that the Charity has been focusing on during its previous financial year.
By way of background, the Saturday School seeks to provide North Korean children of all ages with the opportunity to improve their Korean skills, as many North Korean young people did not have the opportunity to receive proficient schooling and Korean language education when they were living under the North Korean regime. The Saturday School provides the opportunity for North Korean young people and their families to have a place in the community where they can meet regularly, learn together and socialise, and also encourages integration and communication with the local South Korean population as the Saturday School is open to anyone who wishes to attend, so a number of South Korean young people also attend the school. The young people attending the school are also given the opportunity to improve their confidence and enhance their sense of personal identity through developing their Korean skills. The Saturday School is entirely free to attend, and is run by volunteers, to ensure that financial circumstances do not deter any North Korean, South Korean or others to wish to learn from attending.
As Hankyoreh North Korean Saturday School has been able to locate other sources of funding, the Charity has not had to make any financial grants to support the activities of "Hankyoreh" North Korean Saturday School. As such, the Charity has focused its attention towards providing free advisory support
for the School to consider its future plans, particularly helping the School with progressing its application to become a registered charity in its own right, which will help to build the School’s profile and enable it to raise funding from third parties and other charitable organisations more easily.
