## **Trustees’ Annual Report and Accounts** 

2023/2024 

The Trustees of **Change through Education in Africa** present their seventh annual report and accounts, covering the period between 1[st] May 2023 and the end of its financial year, 30[th] April 2024 (‘the period’). 

## **Reference and Administration Details** 

**Change through Education in Africa** , also known as ‘ **CEDA** ’, is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) which was registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales on 10[th] May 2017. The charity’s registration number is **1172971** . 

The charity does not have any formal offices or other premises within the UK. Our registered address during the period was: **5 Spruce Close, Leigh Sinton, Worcestershire, WR13 5FD.**

Emilie Larter and Hana Valúšková are founders of CEDA. Sheeba Khan and Joseph Waiswa reside in Uganda where the charitable projects take place, with Emilie Larter moving to join them in December 2023.  Emilie Larter is the charity’s chairperson and Hana Valúšková is the charity’s treasurer. 

Any new trustees will be appointed by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the current charity trustees. 

CEDA’s governing document is our Constitution which guides us in all our decision making as a charity. 



**Objectives and Activities** 

We established CEDA as a non-profit organisation with the aim of striving towards helping to end the cycle of poverty in Uganda. Our mission is to provide children with sustainable, quality education opportunities to break the cycle of poverty in their families once and for all. 

Our objectives, as set out in our constitution, remain unchanged: 

- _To relieve poverty by providing the funds and equipment for training and skill development for families in rural areas of the Busoga Kingdom, Uganda, to bring the quality of life of the beneficiaries to a reasonable standard._ 

- _To provide relief to those in need by reason of age, ill health and financial hardship by providing care facilities to children who are unable to be supported from their home._ 

During this period, CEDA continued its activities with a focus on providing education to children at CEDA Home School. Initially, for the first few months of the period, we continued our work as we had before, supporting both existing and new students who had joined the school. This included providing ongoing education and care for the children at CEDA Home School. 

However, in **January 2024** , we made a strategic shift in our approach. After careful reflection on our resources and the needs of the children, we decided to close some of the smaller projects we had been running. Instead, we focused on funding the education of the children we had been supporting, helping them attend local Ugandan-owned schools. This change allowed us to streamline our efforts and focus on 

providing sustainable education for these children within the existing educational framework in Uganda. 

All trustees continued to work on a volunteer basis. Waiswa Joseph remained in Uganda, overseeing projects, while Emilie Larter took charge of the main fundraising activities, both in the UK and alongside her involvement in Uganda from December 2023. 

We have considered the Charity Commission guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aims and objectives, as well as planning our future activities. The public benefit of CEDA lies in supporting vulnerable children from rural Uganda by providing an education where otherwise they would not receive one. The Trustees confirm that CEDA has complied with Section 17(5) of the Charities Act 2011 in regard to the public benefit requirement. 



**Achievements and Performance** 

The period saw a shift in our approach to supporting children in Uganda as we adapted to the changing circumstances of the year. We continued to build on our achievements while refining our focus to ensure that our efforts had a long-lasting impact. 

**Continued Support for Dan’s Health** : As always, we remained committed to Dan's well-being, ensuring he received monthly check-ups and daily medication for his kidney disease. This ongoing support is crucial to maintaining his health and enabling him to focus on his education. 

**Supporting Children in Transition** : With the closure of our CEDA Home School in early 2024, we assisted four children in returning to their families and transitioning to day schools. For the rest of our primary students, we took the time to carefully select a quality boarding school in Entebbe. We focused on finding an institution with a small teacher-to-student ratio, ensuring that our students would receive the attention and support necessary for their success. 

**Enabling Access to Quality Education** : We successfully supported eight primary school children to attend the selected boarding school in Entebbe, covering all their costs, including school fees, uniforms, transport and other essential requirements. These children now have the opportunity to thrive in an environment that promotes personal growth and academic achievement. 

**First Secondary School Placement** : We are incredibly proud to have supported our first student, Derrick, in attending a reputable secondary boarding school. After passing his Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) with excellent results, we provided the necessary resources to enable him to continue his education and pursue his dreams. 

**Visitation Day:** We organised for the families of the children we support, along with CEDA’s directors Emilie and Josh, their families and staff from the school, to attend the boarding school’s visitation days. This event brought everyone together, allowing families to visit their children, share food, and meet with teachers. It was a highly successful and morale-boosting event that helped encourage the children, reinforcing the strong relationships between their families, the school and the CEDA team. 

**CEDA Pups** : As part of our ongoing efforts to care for vulnerable animals, we continued to look after dogs at the boarding house. However, as we transitioned to a new phase with the children attending boarding school, we decided to make our dog rescue efforts a more distinct project under the name CEDA Pups. This new focus has 

allowed us to better support the dogs we care for and raise funds for their needs, including medical care, food and shelter. We took on several dogs that had been abused and mutilated by scam rescues, which are unfortunately common in Uganda. By sharing these stories, we hope to raise awareness and generate more support for these dogs and others in need. 

These achievements reflect our ongoing dedication to breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering positive change within the communities we serve. 



## **Financial Review** 

This year, we faced a period of transition, which saw a decrease in the overall funds raised compared to the previous year. While our focus shifted, we continued to find ways to engage donors and raise essential funds. 

In terms of fundraising platforms, we made the decision to step back from DonorSee, despite its success and the platform’s ability to provide meaningful updates through video campaigns. The platform required frequent updates and staff involvement, which became increasingly difficult as we scaled back our operations. As a result, we chose to discontinue its use and instead turned to Ko-fi, a new platform that offers a more streamlined approach for donors to set up recurring donations and access updates on the projects they are supporting. Through Ko-fi, we have continued to secure child sponsorships, fundraise for school fees, and initiate specific campaigns to support Dan's ongoing medical costs. 

We also used GoFundMe to raise money specifically for the CEDA Pups initiative, helping fund medical care and the well-being of the dogs in our care. This fundraising effort was vital for providing the necessary resources to support the rescue dogs, including those that had been mistreated by scam rescues. 

As a result, much of this income remained restricted, allocated directly to specific projects such as Dan’s medical expenses and child education costs. However, general donations during the earlier part of the year contributed to covering staff salaries and administrative costs before we closed some of our outreach and educational projects. 

Looking ahead, we aim to build a steady stream of monthly income on Ko-fi, allowing us to better manage ongoing commitments such as Dan’s medical care and the school fees for children we continue to support. 

Adhering to our **Reserves Policy** , we aim to build funds equivalent to six months’ worth of operating costs. While we have not yet reached this target at the end of this period, our shift towards campaign-based fundraising - such as raising school fees ahead of time rather than relying solely on monthly donors - is moving us closer to financial stability. As we continue to refine our approach and explore new fundraising avenues, we anticipate a stronger financial foundation that will support CEDA’s long-term sustainability.
