The Trustees of Change through Education in Africa present their sixth annual report and accounts, covering the period between 1[st] May 2022 and the end of its financial year, 30[th] April 2023 (‘the period’).

Structure, Governance and Management
During the period, there was no change with the charity trustees. Emilie Larter and Hana Valúšková are founders of CEDA. Sheeba Khan and Joseph Waiswa reside in Uganda where the charitable projects take place. Emilie Larter is the charity’s chairperson and Hana Valúšková is the charity’s treasurer.
Any new trustees will be appointed by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the current charity trustees.
CEDA’s governing document is our Constitution which guides us in all our decision making as a charity.
Objectives and Activities

Our objectives, as set out in our constitution, remain unchanged:

To relieve poverty by providing the funds and equipment for training and skill development for families in rural areas of the Busoga Kingdom, Uganda, to bring the quality of life of the beneficiaries to a reasonable standard.

During the reporting period from 1st May 2022 to 30th April 2023, our activities and work in Uganda evolved due to the changed circumstances. This marked the first full academic year since the reopening of schools after the prolonged closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The children were at school for the entire year, allowing us to intensify our efforts in providing quality education and extending our focus to the wider community children as well.
All trustees continued to work on a volunteer-basis. Waiswa Joseph remained in Uganda, overseeing projects, while Emilie Larter took charge of the main fundraising activities in the UK.

The public benefit of CEDA lies in supporting vulnerable children from rural Uganda by providing an education where otherwise they would not receive one. The Trustees confirm that CEDA has complied with Section 17(5) of the Charities Act 2011 in regard to the public benefit requirement.
Achievements and Performance
fundraising platform DonorSee. Through compelling video-based campaigns, we successfully raised over $20,000, a substantial portion of our funds for the year. This financial support empowered us to undertake various impactful initiatives:
Expansion of CEDA Home School: With the funds raised, we were able to welcome 10 new day students to CEDA Home School, furthering our commitment to providing quality education.
Community Outreach: quadruplet toddlers needing school fees and uniforms, to teenagers facing challenges in returning to school after COVID-19 closures. Unfortunately, many of these children had lost their parents due to various reasons, including some to COVID-19. Others encountered financial hardships when their parents' businesses collapsed during lockdown.
Uniform Distribution: All our students, including the new day students, received brand new uniforms, ensuring a sense of equality and pride among them.
Holistic Community Support: Beyond education, we extended our assistance to the broader community by providing essential items such as food, clothing, beds, and support for starting small businesses. A notable case was George William, a previously successful blacksmith who unexpectedly inherited the care of his three nieces and nephews when his brother tragically passed away during the lockdown. This responsibility arose during challenging times, exacerbating the difficulties faced by many. George, having used up all his capital to provide for the children, found himself in financial hardship, and his business went under. Recognising the exceptional circumstances and the deserving nature of his case, we provided support to help him restart his blacksmith business by supplying the necessary materials.
Christmas Presents: Through the generosity of donors, we were able to provide Christmas presents to the children we fundraised for, creating joyous moments for them during the festive season.
Continued Support for Dan's Health: Our commitment to Dan's well-being continued, ensuring he receives monthly check-ups and daily medication for his kidney disease. This support aims to maintain his health and focus on his education.
Emergency Fundraising for CEDA Home School Property: During the period, we faced the imminent seizure of our rental property for CEDA Home School and boarding house. Responding swiftly, we launched a targeted fundraiser on DonorSee. The raised funds allowed us to start essential construction work on our owned land, which included building a perimeter wall, acquiring timbers, and making a significant deposit for the roofing of the boarding house. Additionally, we obtained temporary solar panels to ensure sufficient lighting.

Financial Review

Child sponsorship remained a vital and personal avenue for acquiring funds, enabling donors to establish meaningful connections with individual children. Sponsors actively contribute to covering the daily needs of these children, encompassing school-related expenses for attending CEDA Home School, as well as essentials such as food, toiletries, and other necessities. In instances where full sponsorship was not achieved, shortfalls were effectively addressed through fundraising on DonorSee.
General donations, constituting our unrestricted income, covered our staff salaries in Uganda, administrative, and overhead costs. They also played a pivotal role in covering Dan's medical expenses. Despite having sponsors, his unique condition incurs significantly higher costs. Our unrestricted funds are earmarked for what we deem most important, and ensuring Dan's health

Adhering to our Reserves Policy, our aim is to maintain unrestricted funds equivalent to six months' worth of running costs, ensuring stability for our charitable activities and creating a buffer against potential income reductions. However, during this period, reaching the intended reserve
level was challenging as our unrestricted income was allocated to necessary costs not covered by restricted funds. The majority of our income, coming from restricted sources like DonorSee fundraising campaigns and child sponsorship, could not be held as reserves. Despite this challenge, as our charity grows and anticipates increased unrestricted income, we remain committed to building and maintaining this crucial reserve.
