ELKOLET’S September 2022 – 2023 Annual Impact Report (3)

Before Paula and Bryan met, they were as individuals passionate about helping people, active in equipping them to help themselves and lead fulfilled lives. Together their passion, vision and energy are doubled on their journey facilitating Young People, families and communities.

## A message from the Founders

## “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

1 Timothy 4:12

Bryan and Paula Knowles, along with their two children, lived in The Bahamas until they decided to move to the UK to provide care for Paula’s mother who suffered a stroke whilst battling cancer in 2008. As the children became settled in their new UK schools, the family decided to remain in the UK.

Bryan and Paula had dedicated their lives to the development of young people and having moved to the UK, they continued that pathway. Paula (qualified teacher) began to teach at Weydon secondary School, whilst Bryan became a Governor at Wootey’s primary School and a support staff worker at Amery Hill Academy. They also became involved with the youth work and events provided by Harvest Church and started their own youth group called Berserk.

They soon realised that there was a need amongst the young people and that the schools required alternative solutions closer to Alton. Many of the projects, programmes and services which Jesus gave Bryan and Paula as part of ELKOLET’S vision for The Bahamas would address these identified needs.

In February 2013, my wife (Jolanta) and I met the Knowles family at Harvest Church and after hearing the vision God had given them for the young people, starting in Alton, we both were moved that Jesus had called us to share in this vision.

At the heart of ELKOLET’S vision it has always been ALL about the Young People – not just those who may require an alternative pathway through their educational journey; nor just those who are struggling to cope with life’s adversities and its pressures and neither just for those who find themselves unable to secure a job placement. No, although ELKOLET takes reactive measures to help with those types of situations, ELKOLET’S true focus is on ‘Prevention’!

“Prevention is better than cure” (Desiderius Erasmus 1466-1536) and ELKOLET and ELKOLET Benevolent Foundation heads up its preventative programmes and services aimed at as many Young People that can be reached.

## **Overview**

We have always believed Young People should have alternatives to education because education is not a one hat that fits all. Through ELKOLET we have been able to achieve this belief and serve students from Schools across Hampshire, England. ELKOLET’S “The King’s Way ( **TKW** )” is the “Alternative Education Provision” giving students other hats and pegs to hang their education, life skills and social awareness on. Since 2012 Paula & I, ELKOLET, ELKOLET Benevolent Foundation and ELKOLET Humanitarian Developers Limited have focused on the reactive Secondary School year groups Years 7 to Years 11 students via Schools’ referral only, family support and local community initiatives.

**TKW** provide core subjects: Maths, English Lang and Lit, Biology and Geography. GCSE students do not need to return to their registered School to sit their exams. TKW provides exam conditions which takes away the tremendous anxiety surrounding exams and returning to their School.

There are more young people struggling with their academia due to many circumstances surrounding social issues and not always education struggles at all. For ELKOLET, there is still a light at the end of each young person and their family’s tunnel if they continue to engage with ELKOLET and its initiatives.

## **Purpose & Objective**

ELKOLET and ELKOLET Benevolent Foundation are to advance the education and personal development of the public in particular young people, whom have been or on the edge of being disengaged from mainstream schools; provide safe and conducive centres for young people who, due to personal circumstances, find it difficult to cope in mainstream education; provide and facilitate family support initiatives for parents and guardians needing family support during the young person’s educational journey during difficult circumstances.

## **(“The King’s Way” “TKW”)**

TKW provide to Schools for Year 7 to Year 11 Learners during difficult circumstances respite breaks, preventative, and reactive interventions. During anyone of these interventions the Learner continues with their education alongside five (5) experienced members of staff who deliver English Language & Literature, Maths, Biology and either Art or Geography approved subjects. Also, three (days) a week a counsellor and mentor is on staff. The members of staff provides support for transiting over into College and will continue this support for past Learners who have engaged with College who find that journey difficult and facilitate those Learners that have not engaged with College at all. TKW always come alongside all agencies connected with the Young Person and their family during their difficult circumstances. Another pleasing accomplishment is reintegration for the Young Person back into mainstream School.

## **Main Activities**

## **Bolt-On (Work Experience and Apprenticeship)**

TKW provide for Year 7 to Year 11 during difficult circumstances respite breaks, preventative, and reactive interventions. TKW offers Bolt-On work experience in hairdressing during anyone of these interventions alongside their education with experienced staff who deliver English Language & Literature, Maths, Biology and either Art or Geography approved subjects. TKW’s work experience also includes life skills using two (2) automobiles onsite enabling the young person to understand changing and checking tyre pressure, checking fluids, changing a windscreen wiper and dangers in operating a vehicle. ## Achievements & Performance

ELKOLET has had a very good year with the turnover of the Year 11 students. All Year 11 students entered and attended their exams.

This for ELKOLET has seen a greater involvement of parents for the alternative education facilities. Schools have also continued their visiting support for their students commissioned with ELKOLET. ELKOLET’S partnering with the schools, parents and agencies have strengthen successfully over this year. The cohort enrolment have increased alongside additional staff members. The start of the 2022/2023 academic year, have welcomed students’ years 7 and 8 for alternative intervention.

An addition introduced has been with Alton’s sport cent “Everyone Active” program which ELKOLET books two sessions on a Wednesday for all students to enjoy. This is also 100% funded by ELKOLET.

(16) ELKOLET’S September 2022 – 2023 Annual Impact Report

_cont’d Section (D)_

**Achievements** – Each student with ELKOLET includes support for their family. There are Teams meetings, telephone and email communication with all parents during their child’s placement with TKW. On several occasions this has happened after midnight where parents have contacted for support.

**Performance** - ELKOLET’S Family Support goes beyond the norm by house and garden clean-ups, transportations to-andfrom food store. Always being available for agency’s conferences, school meetings and in some instances with the police.

**Achievements** – With the hairdressing salon and restaurant the work experience students had a chance to witness personal service to others. What this means to a customer expecting value for their payment. Again, all year groups have improved communication, time management and problem-solving skills which wove its way back into the alternative learning environment, too.

**Performance** - This year the whole cohort have in some way benefited from the hairdressing, restaurant, vehicle and bike workshop Bolt-On initiative.

## **Family Support Services**

## **Work Experience & Apprenticeship**

## **Youth Today Food Kits**

**Achievements** – As a private organization with a Christian grounding we are very pleased that many families benefited from this programme.

**Performance** - With support from community and church volunteers and partnering with the local Schools many families were reached and supported.
