As I sat down last night to prepare my statement, I thought I’d look back into the news archive on our web site just to recall what we’ve done over the past year. I quite literally sat there in complete amazement when I was reminded of everything that we’ve achieved. Clearly, we got off to a bad start with the move out of Alford but as usual we just got on with it and lived to fight another day. The generosity of Origin Packaging, Nick and Patrick White and the Thorpe family have enabled us to keep the collection reasonably safe and secure and at very little cost to us. Clearly there has been some deterioration, but nothing that can’t be put right in the future. We have added two more vehicles to the collection whilst we said goodbye to the F109 and an IBEX. The acquisition of the 45 monitor must be one of our greatest accomplishments as a group. Saving this unique piece of RAF Fire Service history was only possible thanks to the generosity of the Museum Volunteers and some external donations. Although complete and presentable, we will need to do some work to bring it up to full display standard, but it has already turned heads at Lincs Fest and the IBCC. We attended some shows, but clearly this year saw more COVID restrictions that prevented some shows going ahead but we were still able to get the Museum name out and about.
We have managed to stay positive throughout the year, even though we don’t have a museum at present. Work has continued with a steady turnout of volunteers on most weekends. I have been worried about morale and motivation but that said, we still have a healthy number of volunteers on our books. I know it’s not very exciting doing the inventory, but it is an essential task that needs to be completed if we hope to gain accreditation on day. Several smaller restoration projects have been undertaken including the strip down of the Bedford OY, the Hose Cart restoration and the restoration of the Scammell Wheelbarrow Pump.
Our involvement with Scampton Holdings hopefully holds the key to our future and hopefully, we may see the establishment of a permanent home for the museum back at Scampton this year. Clearly this is not a foregone conclusion and there is a long way to go yet, but I do firmly believe this is our best chance to finally realise our dream.
Having been elected as the Chairman of the RAF & Defence Fire Services Association in November last year I hope to build a closer working relationship between the two organisations which will
hopefully generate more opportunities to promote, expand and secure the future of the museum. We need to build even better links between the past, present and indeed the future of the MOD fire services.
In conclusion I would like to thank you all for your continued hard work and support and lets hope that 2022 sees a return to the new normal and hopefully a year where we don’t suddenly have to react to a crisis once again.
