Para 1.20 | CREATIVE MENTORSHIP F4Wt had the new mentoring initiative ‘Pay It 4ward’ about to begin it’s 12 week program when the pandemic hit. Whilst F4Wt initially postponed the activity, by autumn 2020, and with ongoing uncertainty, we pulled the initial plan and began to develop the initiative to a shorter, digital offering. The ‘Pay It 4ward Masterclasses’ went live in early 2021 as a 3 month program of sessions with industry professionals focusing on areas of the industry necessary for the transition from aspiration to career. The masterclasses were open to all, albeit with a focus on those within Rushmoor, as being on a digital platform allowed us to widen our audience. The masterclasses were well attended and received enthusiastically, with some participants remaining under the F4Wt mentoring wing. Each session was recorded and made available on F4Wt’s YouTube channel to allow for increased accessibility and ongoing participation. The project was funded in part by Rushmoor Community Lottery. HARDSHIP 2020 was an unprecedented year for hardship amongst the music and arts community, with many of the professionals that offer their services to F4Wt finding themselves without income fromgigs and engagements.F4Wt core |
funds simply couldn’t stretch to meet this overwhelming need. However, throughout our ‘Lockdown Live’ sessions over the AprilAugust 2020 period, a digital tip jar was created for the audience to donate. This tip jar was then split between all those who performed as part of the series to complement the nominal performance fee F4Wt paid each artist. A project grant was awarded to Void_Null, a local audio-visual experimental outfit who create immersive av experiences, written as space specific performances, to pursue their project centred on and in the historic wind tunnels at Farnborough Airport. This funding was in part to Arts Council England funding for the project and will create opportunities for learning and performance within the community. Due to covid restrictions on sanitisation and sharing of equipment, the F4Wt Gear Exchange has been temporarily suspended. Future funding became a concern as the pandemic continued, with all shows suspended for an unknown period, a different approach was needed. In August 2020 F4WTees was launched with our partners Teemill. F4WTees is F4Wt’s shop front for official Mega City Four merchandise and other F4Wt designed and branded streetwear. This met a need by MC4 fans for quality, officially licensed products - there are many bootleggers on auction sites. F4Wt partnered with Teemill as a UK business with sustainability and environmental concerns at the core of their business. All merchandise is certified organic, Teemill itself is an energy neutral company and all merchandise is shipped in fully recyclable and compostable packaging. These credentials seemed essential to F4Wt, and further enhance our stance as a forward looking entity. F4WTees has created a steady income since its launch and is expected to earn around £2k of additional funding for F4Wt per annum. OUTREACH Keen to continue our outreach into the local music community, we paired with Waveform Ravedorm, a fledgling collaborative project by students and lecturers on the University of Creative Arts music tech course. Waveform Ravedorm meet each week as a digital platform for peer to peer support, sharing work and discussing ideas. F4Wt participation is intended to develop into a support structure in the near future. COMMUNITY
F4Wt continues to be approached in an advisory capacity to local government and organisations. The inaugural Rushmoor Arts Festival was cancelled due to the pandemic, but Rushmoor Borough Council continue to see the importance of promoting the arts to increase participation within the borough. Arts Council England and RBC are working together to develop a cultural strategy going forward, with F4Wt forming part of the advisory panel. CURATION Within a week of the first lockdown being announced in the UK, F4Wt reacted by programming four months of ‘Lockdown Livestream’ sessions each week via social media. A curated project that promoted new artists alongside more established acts became a successful focal point for the wider community in a time when isolation was adversely affecting mental health and social anxiety. The sessions became the unintentional hub of the local music loving community, and a way of supporting the artists we work with. The ‘Lockdown Live’ sessions culminated in a streamed club night as an afterparty to Aldershot’s West End Centre’s Westival. The afterparty was a live link up with regular F4Wt volunteers DJing from Berlin. This session was so well received F4Wt organised another as a Christmas celebration during the lockdown restrictions at the end of 2020. ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE F4Wt took the enforced quieter period of the pandemic lockdown’s to address further planning and organisational needs. F4Wt welcomed Dr James Armstrong and Liz Arnold as new trustees, whist discussing and developing plans and strategies to support the delivery of our core aims on a wider scale.
