Summary of the purposes of Para 1.17 The Objects of Art History Link-Up (AHLU) the charity as set out in its are the advancement of education for governing document the public benefit to provide and support the teaching of Art History in particular but not exclusively by: • the provision of teaching to young people in full-time education:  and/or • the provision of advice, guidance, training and consultancy to educational establishments; and/or • non-political campaigning through participation in national committees and working with other organisations; and/or such other charitable activities for the advancement of education for the public benefit as the charity trustees may decide. Summary of the main Para 1.17 and 1.19 During the year we continued to deliver our activities in relation to those main programme, “Art History for Everyone”. purposes for the public This delivers an Extended Project benefit, in particular, the Qualification (EPQ) in one year, and is activities, projects or services underpinned by delivery of the Art History A identified in the accounts. Demand was slightly reduced compared with the previous year, however the course was fully subscribed with students voluntarily choosing to attend classes on term-time Saturdays to study for additional qualifications. AHLU offers students weekly online homework clubs and individual EPQ and study support from AHLU’s Student Operations Officer plus individually assigned specialist EPQ mentors from across the sector. We also offer students support with university application, access to work 



experience, information about careers in the arts, and membership of our alumni organisation. 

In the academic year from September 2021, we recruited 80 students. Over 40% of this cohort of students were BAME, over 63% had Widening Participation indicators, and 29% were both BAME and WP. 

During the year we also piloted an ‘Introduction to Art History’ course, funded by the Band Trust, which saw over 50 students from state schools, aged between 13 and 15, learn about Art History at The Dulwich Picture Gallery, Courtauld Institute, National Gallery, and the Sir John Soane’s Museum. This pilot year was fully funded by a single grant and was successful, with high levels of engagement and completion.  We plan to further develop and expand the courses in the 2022-23 academic subject to funding. 

AHLU’s ongoing online delivery again allowed us to recruit over half of our students from outside Greater London. 55% of the 2021-2 student cohort came from across the UK, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A significant proportion of this cohort had Special Educational Needs, significant disabilities, with some Looked After Children / in Care. 

AHLU has become recognised as a sector leader in delivering Art History courses online, and in person, collaborating with partner organisations on events and programmes.

Art History Link-Up works with over 50 volunteers who act as mentors to students during their EPQ on the Art History for Para 1.38 Contribution made by Everyone course. ## **Achievements and Performance**

Since the Covid lockdown in March 2020, we continued to deliver our courses virtually, on Zoom. The charity’s principal sources The Art History for Everyone programme is of funds (including any Para 1.47 supported by a wide range of donors, fundraising) including trusts, foundations, commercial organisations and private individuals, with many others contributing support in kind. The charity undertook fundraising during year by approaching foundations and private individuals known for their funding of the arts and/or education-based charities. Our emphasis is on developing relationships with long-term funding partners to enable us to plan ahead and to expand the range of courses we offer. Core funding was provided by the Rothschild Foundation which has agreed a second threeyear commitment towards our core costs. Christie’s (the Auction House) also made a multi-year commitment to help fund the Charity’s teaching costs. Other funders are set out in the accounts.

The main risk to the charity is the loss of the founder and Chief Executive for whatever reason. Without her drive and commitment, it is unlikely that the charity could continue in its present form. 

Several actions have been put in place to mitigate this risk as follows: 

1. The Chief Executive was employed on a full time, but contracted, basis for the year to 31st August 2022, allowing her to forsake other roles and to focus all her efforts entirely on the charity during the year. 

2. Additional resources were devoted to providing great quality and quantity of administrative support for the Chief Executive during the year. 

3. Steps were put in place to move the Chief Executive into a salaried 



position, and this took effect from 1st of September 2022. 

**4.** The Chief Executive was enrolled in an employee pension scheme – effective from 6[th] September 2022.
