TRUSTEES’ REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 5TH APRIL 2025

The trustees submit their annual report and the financial statements for the year ending 5th April 2025.

The History of SAFE:

Founded by Alison Stratford in 2014, SAFE (Saving Abandoned Fly-Grazing Equines) emerged following the rescue of 26 abandoned and neglected horses in Binfield, Berkshire.. Some could not be saved, but many were successfully rehabilitated and rehomed. Since its inception, SAFE has continued to support abandoned and fly-grazed horses, establishing itself as a well-known and respected small charity.

Objectives & Activities: SAFE exists to support landowners, to legally rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned, neglected horses and ponies. SAFE also undertakes rescues under the Animal Welfare Act, involving the Police. Our mission is centred on the 3 R’s > “Rescue, Rehabilitate and Rehome”. This applies to every equine we take in, and we offer lifetime security to ensure they never face neglect again. As a charity we also offer support in the below areas: ● Work with the Police, RSPCA, local authorities, equine bailiffs, and members of the public to rescue 7 abandoned, neglected, and abused horses. a ● Advance the education in the proper care and treatment of equines ● Help to tackle the ever-increasing rise in cruelty to animals by working with other organisations, to ensure neglected equines receive treatment.

● Remain a leading and recognised local charity. Ensuring that rescued horses receive a secure and bright future. ae: on

Structure, Management, and Governance Arrangements :

Saving Abandoned Fly-Grazing Equines became a CIO in April 2017 (started as a rescue in 2014), and is governed by Trustees. The Charity registration number, names of trustees and other information are detailed on page 2

All Trustees hold office until they resign, retire, or are removed. They can be replaced during a general meeting. The individuals responsible for the day-to-day running of the charity are Alison Stratford and Kirsty Mackie.

As a charity, we work collaboratively with equine and animal welfare organisations, local authorities, Saving Abandoned Fly-Grazing Equines Police, veterinarians and rescues, to ensure strong welfare outcomes. The Trustees feel that the main risk to the charity is funding. Economic instability increases competition for donations, and we remain reliant on supporter generosity.

Achievements and Performance:

As a small charity, we have established a professional yet discreet relationship with landowners, such as local authorities and development companies as well as many private landowners. Most are unaware of their rights to detain horses that have been either dumped or illegally fly-grazed on their land. Most often these horses are in poor health and end up in our care.

We have good working relationships with the Police who now regularly seek our advice on the welfare of horses and request our help with serious neglect cases, as well as loose horses on the highways.

SAFE are frequently contacted by members of the public raising concerns about horses that are either fly-grazed or abandoned. This now occurs nationally. Even where we cannot take a horse in, we offer advice and work with trusted organisations to secure the best outcome.

The Trustees remain confident in knowing that SAFE’s objectives are being met.

Within the timeline of this report, we can confirm the following statistics

SAFE Equine Annual Tracker Total Number
Horses Rescued 36
Horses sent to Professional Rehabilitation 14
Horses Fostered 11
Horses Rehomed 35
Horses Returned 3
Horses PTS* due to irrecoverable illness 1
Total number of horses in SAFE’s care in that period 61

*Put To Sleep

Once rescued, all horses are rehabilitated and rehomed, unless they have conditions making them unsuitable for rehoming. These horses remain permanently in our static herd of seven.

Horses join this herd during their decompression period before progressing to rehoming.

Many of the horses we rescue are very unwell or unhandled, and rehabilitation is long and increasingly costly, with more horses requiring hospitalisation or professional rehabilitation. Horses receive microchips, passports, vaccinations and consistent handling before rehoming. Our team of volunteers, vets, farriers, nutritionists and practitioners supports each horse’s welfare needs.

Review of Objectives:

● Help to fight cruelty:

We receive regular alerts from the public, allowing us to intervene promptly. This is a daily part of SAFE’s work .

SAFE continues to collaborate widely to support at-risk horses.

● Remain a leading and recognised local charity:

We continue to be a first point of contact for welfare concerns and remain committed to full rehabilitation and lifelong security for each horse. Website: Our website remains functional but requires an update, which has been delayed due to competing priorities and limited resources. The Rescues: We continue to be inundated by concerned members of the public. Cruelty and neglect remain high, with 7 many colts (young males) removed from their mothers too young and abandoned. Thankfully we are a often able to respond quickly, thanks to members of the public, regarding SAFE as a charity who will get involved.

We continue with Iain McKenzie Equine Practice as primary vets with Donnington Equine Hospital for ae: on hospitalisation. Using a professional rehabilitation establishment has significantly improved outcomes for severely compromised horses.

We have a close relationship with our farrier and remedial trimmer. SAFE uses natural feeds and supplements tailored to horses’ needs

Volunteer Induction and Training:

Every new volunteer undergoes a comprehensive induction before joining a shift at our yards. Health and Safety procedures are thoroughly explained and demonstrated. Each shift is led by an experienced Shift Lead who has undergone extensive training. Under 18s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian; Saving Abandoned Fly-Grazing Equines under-10s are not accepted.

This year saw a consistent volunteer base, with new recruits joining through word of mouth and local Facebook groups. Several have progressed to Shift Lead roles.

Feed and Supplements:

We remain steadfast in our approach to feed quality. We use Agrobs and Simple System products tailored to each horse. Supplements are used to address individual needs, e.g. milk thistle for liver issues, with nutritionist input. Suppliers remain EquiNatural and Global Herbs.

Finances:

Income increased this year, with a corresponding rise in expenditure due to horse numbers and use of professional rehabilitation.

Our fundraising team and supporters remain vital. We are especially grateful to Hilda Florence Holmes Trust Charity for ongoing support covering land rental and feed costs.

Trustees carefully monitor expenditure and work to increase income through donations, grants and fundraising events, including tack sales. Looking Ahead: Trustees agree an annual plan covering rescue operations, land management, horse care, fundraising and rehoming. Summary: if oN The trustees are confident that SAFE continues to meet its mission and remains committed to ongoing improvement and strong rescue outcomes for every horse in our care. All Trustees continue to agree an ena. annual plan of improvements covering all aspects of the charity, from rescue, maintenance and restructure of land management, daily care of horses to fundraising and rehoming horses. ae: LS
