## **st - 1 Whitton Report (2023 24)** The Aim of 1st Whitton Scout Group is to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. We provide exciting and adventurous activities alongside a progressive training and award scheme. All are encouraged to participate to the best of their ability. Steve has decided to stand down, therefore we are now asking for a volunteer to continue the good work. Group Lead report: As Group lead, my primary role continues to be offering support to the Leadership teams ensuring that they have opportunities for training and giving them the right facilities to carry out their roles. It is also my responsibility, with the help of the trustees, leaders and supporters, to ensure that our youngsters are kept safe while they are in our care. As seven of the Scouts moved on to District Explorers, at the beginning of this year, our Group youth numbers were down, compared to 2023. However, we have seen a steady growth during the last two terms. Although Magellan Explorers come under the District team, we are pleased to consider them part of the 1[st] Whitton family. Since the last report in October 23, we have managed to fit in several more camps alongside the badge days, air rifle competitions and St George’s Day parade, not forgetting of course our Pantomime visit. A team of parents and youngsters spent a few hours planting out the eighty plus saplings, which were donated by the Woodland Trust. There has been a record number of badges presented over the last two terms, which is a good indication of the active section programmes. We are grateful to the District team who continue to support the Group through their guidance, training opportunities and the generation of District based activities. ## **Assets and Premises.** To remain compliant with Ofsted we had to fit a hand basin into the stainless-steel worktop in the kitchen. The raised flower bed was finally finished, complete with plants. Two trees were pollarded. There was one major issue. Due to a combination of causes, including one area having collapsed, the sewers from the building started backing up. After pipe replacement, we had to enlist a drainage expert to jet the rest out. Within the main building, there have been the usual minor maintenance needs. Our chair stock is dwindling, which is largely due to the backs separating from the seats. Looking forward, we now have a leak in the main roof that appears during wet and windy days. Due to the material of the existing roof, we would like to replace it with something more eco-friendly. Although a major project, I am hoping that this year’s Trustee team can investigate the financing and implementation of it. We have now replaced the pioneering poles and ropes. However, we do need to build a shelter for them. The camping equipment is being replaced as necessary. We have bought a new website which we hope to have up and running very soon. ## **Finances** ## **Funding.** The rugby parking has not been as well attended this season. This is mainly due to the restructuring of the Eventbrite platform. We are working on ways to improve the uptake and, as ever, thank you to George for looking after this important fund-raising activity. Gift Aid continues to be a worthwhile exercise adding a minimum of £1000 annually to the Group’s funds. The Group receives income from Frejo After School Club, Kerswell Kids Day Nursery and Twickenham District Model Railway Club. This income is used for utility payments, insurance, and general upkeep of the facilities. Termly Subscriptions from parents are split between National Scouting headquarters, Greater London Southwest Scout County and Richmond upon Thames Scout District, through capitation at the beginning of the year. The surplus is used directly by the Group for badges, scarves and some craft materials. Most of the 1[st] Whitton camps and activities are subsidised through fund raising and donations. ## **Future** : After the success of last year’s Korea Camp, we are already looking forward to next year’s big district wide summer camp which is to have the theme of Birthdays. We will keep you informed and set up a payment schedule. Talking of Birthdays, did you know, 1[st] Whitton will celebrate its Centenary in 2027. That’s only three years away and I hope we can set up a sub team of parents to start bringing together our archive and planning a year of activities that the youngsters will remember. In addition to all of that, 2027 is the year of the next Jamboree, which is being held in Poland. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: - examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act; - to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5((b) of the 2011 Act; and - to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. ## **Basis of the independent examiner’s report** My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records.
