society as a whole.
The Frome Shed normally runs sessions for 50 weeks
(out of 52 weeks) across the year. Covid-19
restrictions meant that there were only 15 weeks
when we could open the Shed; 11 of these weeks we
were restricted to a maximum of six attendees, and
there were only 4 weeks when unrestricted access
was allowed by Government covid restrictions.
In all, the Men's Shed met for just 14 sessions, with an
average attendance of 8 Shedders .The Women's
Shed met for 8 sessions, with an average attendance
of 6 Shedders.
In addition to the sessions held in the Shed, there
were short (one hour) outdoor meetings held in
Victoria Park. These meetings were held in groups of
six, and socially distanced.
A total of 24 diferent members attended these Shed
Sessions across the period, with an assessed total of
over 150 Shedder hours spent in the Frome Shed.
With so few face-to-face sessions being possible, the
Frome Shed increased the number of newsletters to
members to every two weeks across the year. In
addition, there was 15 Zoom (virtual) video sessions
for members, including a Christmas Quiz.

A study of benefts (pre Covid) of some 62 Men’s
Sheds by Glasgow University recently reported
improvements in their overall health and wellbeing of
Shedders; this included:

An increased sense of happiness and contentment
in their lives.

Decreased feelings of depression and anxiety that
came from being isolated.

An increased sense of purpose and meaning in
their lives.

Increased feelings of confdence and self-worth.

An increased sense of belonging and inclusion.
This is echoed by feedback received from Frome
Shedders.
It isn’t only Shedders who have benefted from
attending the Shed – Some of the many projects
undertaken by the Shed during the period included
these items made or repaired for people and other
groups in the local area:

Swift nesting boxes for the Shoscombe Climate &
Nature Group

Many hedgehog boxes, hanging bird feeders and
nest boxes

Four specialised tripod mounted bird feeders for a
flming project

Completion of refurbishment of garden tables, and
chairs for the local Hospital

A coal bunker for a local resident

Many planters for local residents and groups

Small gauge railway signal (work in progress)

Refurbishment of an electric lawn mower and a
manual push mower

Repair of cat cabin for local Cats Protection group

Erection of a washing line for a local resident

Refurbishment of cofee tables and bedside
cabinets

There were five “Shed Shows” broadcast on a

shows included content on allotments, walking, rock
and roll, resilience & dealing with lockdown, pets,
continued learning for older adults and
Grandparenting.
In addition to the presenters, over forty people took
part in these shows, from a range of local charities,
other Sheds in Somerset and other organisations.
A further nine “Shed Happens” Shows were produced
during the two lockdowns across the year.
The purpose of these shows was to soften the blow of
self-isolating for Shedders and keep people more in
touch with the Sheds they belong to. The theme was
“Keeping Sheds connected”. The subject areas
included:
 Features on the Frome Make:Shed and Tech Shed
 Interviews with International Sheds in New
Zealand, Denmark, USA, Canada & Australia

part in these nine “Shed Happens” Shows. (Including 20 Frome Shedders)

These Shed Shows received a special mention in the Men and Boys Coalition Special Crisis Award that was awarded to the UK Men’s Sheds Association.

The Covid Safety Team (Convened in May 2020) continued to meet throughout the period, ensuring ongoing Covid safety, both in terms of equipment, supplies, procedures, communication and training sessions for Duty Managers. This was recognised in the Somerset wide “Covid Confident Communities” Leaflet, with the Frome Shed listed as a good example on “how to re-open safely.”
