**UK LANGA TOWNSHIP PRE-SCHOOL TRUST** Trustees Report and Financial Statements

Year ended: 31[st] March 2021

Charity no. 1172638

Trustees Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31[st] March 2021

The Trustees present their annual report and financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31[st] March 2021. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note to the accounts and comply with the charitys trust deed, the Charities Act 2011 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland published on 16 July 2014.

## **Objectives and Activities**

The purpose of LTPT is to advance education for the benefit of the public in the township of Langa, Cape Town by supporting pre-school initiatives in the township through assistance such as materials, equipment and furnishing, and direct financial assistance, the provision of professional advice and suc h assistance as deemed appropriate.

The 10[th] LTPT Anniversary Nomonde Project (2018/2021) was continued during this financial year, this to be the final year. However, the financial impact of the pandemic on the events programme led to a decision to complete the playground in two stages and the final one fifth of the work was transferred to the 2021/22 financial year. The Trustees were able to continue to fund the Nomonde Educare Office and to give regular support to 6 pre-schools and important emergency grants to the Langa Early Child Development Forum.

## **Achievements and Performance**

The Trust benefitted significantly from the continuing provision of administration and design free of charge as part of the mission of those involved and from their vision for children in Langa Township. In terms of the donations and other income all these funds were spent on the children and their pre-schools.

## **Financial Review**

The key numbers at the end of the year were Income 2020/21 £28,114 (£38,117), Expenditure 2020/21 £26,464 (£39,650), Surplus £1,651 (£ (1,533)) and bank balance at 31 March 2021 £3,152 (£2,157).

This was a significant improvement on the Pandemic scenario projected in May 2020 with Income at £12,700 and Expenditure at £12,800. Funds arose from regular and one-off, special donations. No profitable events were held. Regular donations amounted to £6,404 (£3,982: 2019/20) and other donations to £15,208 (£17,936). Gift Aid on donations made a vital contribution, the payment by HMRC being £4,078 (£3,178).

## Trustees Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 31[st] March 2021

The Trust has not established a Reserves policy to date. The context for the decision has been that all the work is undertaken by volunteers, there are no liabilities concerning overheads. When held an event makes a net contribution to funds. Moreover, careful money management has ensured that there has been no bank deficit over the ten years of operation, nor does the Trust have an overdraft facility. The Trust considered further the question of risk and, whilst knowing that it would be useful to hold a reserve sufficient to cover three months of fixed costs in Cape Town, the continuing view is that the real cost of a reserve is the opportunity lost to invest in the pre-school children. Towards the end of this financial year, to facilitate the continuation of Phase 1 work on the Nomonde playground a short-term, interest free loan was given to aid liquidity, and this was repaid by 31 March.

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

The Patrons of the UK Langa Township Pre-School Trust (LTPT) are The Right Reverend Dr Alan Smith, Bishop of St Albans and Dr Robert Parsons OBE, MBE. LTPT was registered with the Charity Commission as a Charitable Trust (number 1172638) on 19 April 2017, following a declaration of trust made by the five Trustees, dates as below. This followed a four-year period during which the Trust had been established with three founder trustees: Pam Gaddes, Sarah Pickles and Gordon Gaddes. Pam Gaddes passing away on 23 June 2015, and Sarah Pickles resigning on 16 June 2016, the Chairman Gordon Gaddes took steps to have new Trustees appointed, increasing the number to five and improving the occupational and age balance. Currently the Trustees are Aimee Luther (declaration of trust 10 April 2017), Emily Lynskey (13 April 2017), Geoff Smith (5 April 2017), Gordon Gaddes (13 April 2017) and Rosina Pocock (13 April 2017), Rosina Gaddes from 15 September 2017. The Trustees are not reimbursed, and no expenses have been claimed to date.

The first meeting of the new Board was on 12 November 2016 chaired by Gordon Gaddes (Founder Trustee 18 February 2011) and was attended by Rosina Pocock (Trustee 7 December 2015) and Geoff Smith, Aimee Luther and Emily Lynskey all three appointed on 12 November 2016. Additionally, James Keeling was appointed as a sixth Trustee and Treasurer by the Board on 30 September 2017.

The intention is to hold annually a minimum of two meetings of the Board, with more meetings dependent on needs. Meetings on ZOOM in 2020/21 were held on 20 June and 17 October in 2020 and 13 March in 2021.

There are no subscribing members in the Trust, but 150 e-mail contacts, known as Friends, receive quarterly newsletters, and more widely people can follow our work through www.langapreschooltrust.uk.

## **C haima Remak**

This charity exists to bring benefit to unprivileged children and their parents 6000 miles away. It thrives largely through people in the UK giving it their time, ideas and energy and money. In this financial year 98% of the available money was spent on pre-schooling in Langa Township. No charges for administration and expenses were claimed. COVID prevented the organisation of the hitherto profitable events programme. 2020/21 was another vital year for the Trust, the third year in which the office and the Administrator at the Nomonde Pre-School made a sustained contribution to the work of LTPT. This work and the LTPT-funded Nomonde Educare Account continued to be overviewed by the part-time LTPT Advisor in Cape Town, Nadia Petersen of Ground breakers. The year saw the completion of 80% of the Nomonde playground, less than anticipated because of the pandemic. Specially raised funds had to be diverted to purchase masks and sanitisers to support the 6 pre-schools and to make two grants to the hard-pressed Langa Early Child Development Forum, with its 36 pre-schools covering 8000 children.
