Christ Church Cheylesmore

Christ Church Annual Report for 2022 The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Christ Church Cheylesmore, Coventry , operating within the Diocese of Coventry, is a registered charity number 1172607. Our mission statement is:

Worshipping God : Bringing us into a more intimate relationship with Christ; Making Disciples : Raising up passionate disciples for Christ; and Transforming Communities: Combatting loneliness, isolation, and the stress of modern life by creating Christ-centred communities.

Christ Church continued to progress its mission in spite of declining membership, dramatic cost rises due to the war in Ukraine, and the increasing threat of climate change.

Worshipping God

Our worship pattern has shifted since the pandemic with more emphasis on building community and children. Our monthly pattern is:

The breakfast service has grown and attracts the greatest number of children.

Sunday school continues most Sundays although numbers have yet to recover. Excel, now renames Space2, has one person usually, Explorers and Seekers often combining to make one group of 4 or 5 children. Those who attend do appreciate what is offered and we are very grateful to our teacher who persevere under difficult circumstances.

For some months we ran SES, Sunday Evening Session, a youth group with games, pizza and worship. We worked together with City Church who not could provide inspiring worship, but who had youth of their own to bring. Sadly, personal circumstances (i.e. youth leaders having babies) meant SES stopped for the summer and never restarted.

Special services were held at Christ Church to mark the HM Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee, then sadly to mark her death. Admired by many and a pillar of faith and strength to the Church of England, she will be sadly missed.

Making Disciples

Fishers, our initiative to create a 2 year discipleship program with provision for 4 young adults to live at the Lodge, progressed from fundraising to renovation of the Lodge. This was a major undertaking that that began with negotiations with architects and builders. The unexpected rise in construction costs due to the war in Ukraine meant compromises were made. By the end of the year, the lodge was just completing kitchen install and white goods

were on order. The near completion of the Lodge was a major step forward. We will always remember God’s provision for this phase of the project, that included:

The Pub group continued to meet as well, focused on various topics and open to those especially on the exploring faith issues.

Transforming Communities

Tea and Chat

Tea and Chat restarted again in March 2022 and it was wonderful to see the joy on people’s faces at seeing each other after all the stops and starts of covid and not being able to meet up. We are sad that not everyone has been able to return after covid but it has at the same time been a delight to welcome a few new faces to the group.

The group meets every Thursday between 2pm and 3,30pm with tea and cake enjoyed whilst chatting with others. Some of the group like to play scrabble or dominoes and an occasional quiz can also challenge us.

A cream tea was enjoyed in the vicarage garden in August when we were blessed with perfect weather for the occasion and the group was invited to an amazing Christmas lunch in the hall in December.

Noah’s Ark

Noah’s Ark is a stay-and-play baby and toddler group which runs weekly during term-time in the church hall.

It continues to thrive with up to 40 babies and toddlers attending each week. Families prebook each week which helps us to make sure the hall doesn’t get too busy.

Noah’s Ark is more than just a stay-and-play session, we are a community where people can share stories and make friends. We also are able to share information about events that are happening at church.

We are very grateful for all those who help at Noah’s Ark, either setting up and clearing away, serving refreshments, or being there as a friendly face for people to chat to, and would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their support.

Summer Celebration

The Summer Celebration in June 2022 was inspired by the Queen's Jubilee, the Commonwealth Games and a desire to have some in-person fun together. It involved many of the groups that meet in C4 and was a great celebration of our ‘common wealth’. It was very well supported by the local community.

Christmas Celebration

The Christmas Celebration in December was a development of our previous Christmas Fairs with a Christmas Tree Festival and carols. This again involved many of the C4 community groups and was a great success raising over £900 for our church charity, African Pastors Fellowship.

Governance and the Parochial Church Council

The PCC, although small in number, continued to meet throughout 2022. As well as receiving regular finance updates, which included discussions over the allocation of various funds, GDPR and Safeguarding compliance was monitored and building renovation, rental and repair plans were made, with special consideration of the need to respond to climate change and how we might reduce the carbon footprint of our activities and buildings. Discussions were also held regarding youth work and the challenges of dwindling numbers of both children and of volunteers, often leading back to the need to attract young adults and families to our congregation and how we might do this.

In addition to all of this, the PCC sought to support volunteers in community work, from providing storage for Ukrainian aid supplies, to hosting the Summer Celebration and Christmas Fair, and to committing to a planned calendar of events for 2023. A successful Away Day was also held in September, at which the PCC hosted group leaders from within the church, with activities and discussions to highlight any challenges or opportunities.

The PCC has again been greatly encouraged by the support of those attending the prayer meetings that are held at the same time as the PCC meetings and we hope to continue faithfully and prayerfully in 2023.

Electoral Roll

The number on the Electoral Roll stood at 83 at the 2022 APCM. At the time of writing, it now stands at 74.

Fabric

We continue to address issues which were highlighted in the Quinquennial Report of 2021.

One of the most pressing issues, that of the door leading from the tower on to the church roof, was resolved with the fitment of a new door in April 2022. Also, more attention has been paid to the maintenance of rainwater goods and gardens around the church.

Many outstanding issues with our fabric are as a legacy of the original design and construction of the buildings. Foremost amongst these is the poor environmental performance. This is caused by such factors as the large, single-glazed windows, particularly in the church, and the roof of the hall, which appears to be comprised of a single layer of plywood, covered with roofing felt.

The fluorescent strip light tubes in the hall were replaced with LED tubes in October 2022. There are 33 in total, and the change has reduced electricity consumption from 1.9 kW to around 600 W when the hall is lit.

19/4/2023

Christ Church Cheylesmore

An application was made in November 2022 for a faculty to replace the external doors and windows to the hall. If granted, this will improve safety and security for hall users, as well as improve the environmental footprint for this space.

We would like to carry out further major projects on our church and hall. However, we are severely restricted by the low availability of funds for such projects.

Safeguarding

Our safeguarding representative on the PCC is Pam Price and our Parish Safeguarding Officer is Sarah Neville who has made regular reports to the PCC and maintained the Safeguarding Dashboard. The PCC are not aware of any major incidents that require reporting to the Charity Commission.

Finance

Our end of year position is satisfactory. With an unrestricted balance of £36,750 we have entered 2023 with an acceptable reserve.

However, we cannot avoid the challenges before us that suggest our finances will be less confident going forward:

  1. We continue to offer rental space at a discount. It seems likely that some renters will themselves be impacted by the increased cost of living for their members.

  2. Energy cost increases will impact, especially as we heat these buildings through the winter.

  3. We have numerous structural challenges that will be very costly. It is not obvious how these will be funded, nor is it obvious to me how we can meet the Church of England’s pledge to become carbon neutral.

We have agreed to a modest increase in the parish share from £64,200 to £65,805.

VERDICT: We have much to give thanks for in 2022 with the state of our finances and the work undertaken on Fishers.

Conclusion

We are encouraged by the stability of our finances and many of our ministries continuing, and in many cases growing in spite of challenges. We are cautiously optimistic about growth opportunities going forward.
