Christ Church Cheylesmore
Annual Report 2021
The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Christ Church Cheylesmore, Coventry , operating within the Diocese of Coventry, is a registered charity number 1172607. Our mission statement is:
Worshipping God : Bringing us into a more intimate relationship with Christ; Making Disciples : Raising up passionate disciples for Christ; and
Transforming Communities: Combatting loneliness, isolation, and the stress of modern life by creating Christ-centred communities.
The year 2021 was overshadowed by the coronavirus pandemic still. Nevertheless, when we stopped to review the year and count our blessings, we realised the extent to which God was active. Hence, our report this year is a counting of our blessings.
Worshipping God
-
Our services moved from pre-recorded audio to live video streaming online. This provision has proven invaluable for maintaining links with the community on Sunday, and also for providing the option for remote attendance at funerals. We also have a library of songs developed and recorded at home studios that we still use today.
-
On Palm Sunday, we re-opened the church for in-person attendance.
-
Later in the year we were able to bring back live music into the service.
-
Our practice of Holy Communion was restarted as well. The pandemic has changed our practice drastically, but positively.
-
Wednesday morning prayers using Zoom have become rich spiritually as well as convenient.
-
We introduced new leaders into the worship service.
-
We introduced a breakfast service on the 3[rd] Sunday of each month and this has proven very popular.
Making Disciples
-
Sunday school restarted in the garden and then moved indoors when restrictions allowed.
-
Inspire has maintained a link with our teens.
-
A gift day for Fishers raised £36k from the congregation, and with an additional grant of £30k from the diocese, the Fishers project hit its target fundraising.
-
Bible study groups have restarted.
-
We held a light party too.
Transforming Communities
-
We began renting rooms to The Music Room Coventry who offer music tuition. It was a great joy to see their founders realise their dream of their own music school. Their generosity returned means now we are renting offices to their church and partnering to offer youth worship. God has truly blessed this relationship.
-
Tea&Chat restarted with a garden party at the vicarage.
11/4/2022
Christ Church Cheylesmore
-
Noah’s Ark restarted on Thursday mornings.
-
An online Christmas fair was held again.
-
A smashing Christmas lunch was served that included many of our lunch guests.
-
We continue to support the Willenhall Foodbank with regular money donations.
Fabric
- The DAC granted faculty for the removal of the partition behind the pulpit.
People
-
Mary and Roger Lindley become wardens of Christ Church.
-
Arthur and Lynn took a sabbatical September to November.
-
We said farewell to Doris Savage, Mark Taylor, Doreen Malier, Lynn Dolby, Jayne Crommer, Earnest Dorman, Sylvia Turley, Joan Davis, and Rosemary Osborn.
-
We celebrated the marriages of Michelle Stokes and Garry Cheshire, Sharon Kennedy and Ian Coleman, Shiv and John Pithouse.
-
We note that in the 2 years of the pandemic, we have not lost anyone to COVID sickness, for which we are very grateful.
-
Most importantly, we want to acknowledge all our hard working volunteers who have been helping us recover from the pandemic – THANK YOU!
Treasurer’s Report
The Independent Examiner’s report on our 2021 accounts is presented to the APCM and we thank Gavin Kibble for his work and advice. In what was another challenging year for everybody we give thanks that our finances have been resilient once again and thank everybody for their faithful stewardship. The accounts show that our unrestricted funds grew from £30,934 to £35,180 and restricted funds increased by almost £10,000, notably through the Palm Sunday Gift Day for the Fisher’s Project and C4 works. A further appeal for Fisher’s elicited further pledges of financial support, as reported above under “Making Disciples”. The bank account also holds PCC designated funds of £32,286 as detailed in the report.
We acknowledge with thanks a £2,500 grant from the All Churches Trust towards the roof security system. We also acknowledge the benefit gained by Wave Utilities writing off much of the water charges that had accumulated over the several years it has taken to resolve our registration, this has saved us in excess of £3000. The financial support for the Food Bank from members of this church have been received with thanks and continues to provide much needed support to the wider community.
In 2021 the PCC approved a reserves policy, which was increased at the start of 2022 in the light of escalating inflation and thus a sum of £30,000 is considered to be a prudent level to ensure the smooth financial management of the church cash flow.
As we look forward to 2022 it is clear that the challenges will continue and we trust that God will continue to bless us financially. Thank you for all you do, in whatever capacity, to financially underpin His work in this community. A special thanks to the finance team,
11/4/2022

especially Jenny & Sarah. If anybody has any questions or wishes to adjust their financial commitment please feel free to contact me. Tony Price.
Safeguarding
Our safeguarding representative on the PCC is Pam Price and our Parish Safeguarding Officer is Sarah Neville who has made regular reports to the PCC and maintained the Safeguarding Dashboard. The PCC are not aware of any major incidents that require reporting to the Charity Commission.
Electoral Roll
The Electoral Roll stood at 88 at the 2021 APCM. At the time of writing, it now stands at 82.
Conclusion
There is no doubt that 2021 was a difficult year in terms of ministry. Sunday attendance has not recovered and we struggle to find volunteers to run many ministries. However, Christ Church has kept going, making changes as necessary. What is clear from counting our blessings is that God is still leading us forward.
