Annual Re ort for 2020 p
The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Christ Church Cheylesmore, Coventry , operating within the Diocese of Coventry, is a registered charity number 1172607. Our mission statement is:
Worshipping God : Bringing us into a more intimate relationship with Christ; Making Disciples : Raising up passionate disciples for Christ; and Transforming Communities: Combating loneliness, isolation, and the stress of modern life by creating Christ-centred communities.
The year 2020 was dominated by the COVID-19 pandemic that closed many aspects of society including the church. Our Annual Parochial Church Meeting was held on Sunday 15[th] March 2021 and the UK government announced the first lockdown the next day. Most church operations ceased immediately.
Worshipping God
In spite of lockdown we continued to worship, at home initially using prerecorded audio files, then by pre-recorded video files, and finally via livestreamed services with pre-recorded sections e.g. music, readings, and sermon. During the summer, easing of lockdown allowed the return to inperson attendance in church, but with many restrictions, including the banning of singing and socializing. Unsurprisingly, only the most confident attended and the majority stayed at home to watch the service. To the 16 people for whom internet access was a problem, CDs and/or DVDs were made each week and hand delivered. The effort to maintain our worship life was onerous, but it has kept our community together.
Our practice of Holy Communion changed drastically, of course, but we eventually converged on delivering a picnic bag with a miniature bottle of wine, a pack of oat cakes, and chocolates. Although we could not be together in physically, we held up our cups and found unity spiritually.
Throughout lockdown, our Wednesday morning prayers have continued, and surprisingly we have grown from 3 or 4 to 10 or 12 persons. These 15-minute meetings during the week to read a Psalm, pray through the parish prayer diary and offer prayers for the pandemic and those in need became an important time of connecting with each other and God.

Although Easter 2020
was a very subdued affair, we make a great effort for Christmas. We ran our scarecrow trail putting all materials online and many members of the public joined in. The Christmas Fair also went online and raised over £600 for foodbanks. We also initiated a light trail with 12 houses decorating windows to illustrate the true meaning of Christmas. Our Christingle service, which was modelled after the Muppet Show, was watched 200 times by 100 families and these viewing figures exceeded our expectations. For the Carol Service, we even managed a virtual choir, recording each singer separately and mixing it all together. Finally, we offered the wider community a professional Nativity Play from Saltmine theatre to be viewed over Christmas at home. Christ Church did not let the pandemic stop Christmas. We proclaimed the birth of Christ in new and imaginative ways.
Making Disciples
The pandemic ended our Pais program sadly. Jordan was finished in December 2019 and returned to Brazil in January. Rike was called back to Germany in March once the pandemic made international internships too risky. Akash, who only arrived in January struggled to find flights back to India but eventually flew home in June. Rike continued to disciple our youth from Germany and via Zoom right until her graduation in June.
Messy Church ceased during lockdown.
In spite of lockdown, some house groups continued to keep in contact and study scripture together. Inspire, a group of youth girls, also continued to meet online. Buddy groups, designed to provide mutual support, were started but these waned over time. An online study of Philippians was offered and a dozen or so people took part in this. Sunday school was also able to offer Zoom sessions that gathered 6 families weekly.

Transforming Communities
Most groups ceased operations immediately upon lockdown and did not resume meeting all year. Great efforts were maintained by phone and care packages and these were a lifeline to those most isolated, usually the elderly of Tea and Chat and Lunch Club. Christ Church started regular financial donations to the food bank and participated in school meal distributions.
During the difficult months of lockdown and enforced isolation, pastoral care of especially the elderly and vulnerable became a major focus. Cluster groups were formed and fortnightly Zoom socials (e.g. remember the Lindley’s slide show on Turkey?) were held to keep people in touch. Every week unfailing, all members of Tea and Chat and Lunch Club were called on the telephone. Every week unfailing, DVDs and CDs of the Sunday service, service sheets and paper copies of the newsletter were posted and, in many cases, hand delivered. All this represented a huge effort and was greatly appreciated.

Finance
The accounts for 2020 are a testament to God’s grace to us and a witness to the faithfulness of the Christ Church Community. In a year beset with lengthy periods of closure, remote worship and hardship experienced by many, we finished the year financially better than we started it. The plot below illustrates what happened to our income in 2020 compared with 2019. I have reported three broad groupings: Direct Giving in all its forms including tax claimed under Gift Aid; Room Rentals covering C4 rooms and offices and the church; and Other Income including The Lodge rental. I have excluded some minor streams of income, such as fees that tend to flow in and out again. You will see that Direct Giving showed an increase through the year and this reflects the outcome of the stewardship campaign at the start of the year and the fact that we carried over 8 months of tax claim from 2019. Unsurprisingly rentals and other income fell as a result of lockdown and a period in which the Lodge was unoccupied, but some of these loses were offset by reduced costs, such as cleaning. Following lockdown members moved their support for the Food Bank from physical to financial donations and so those figures are included in the plot (total £2,350). The jump in direct giving at the year-end reflects a £27,161 bequest which the PCC have designated to the Fishers Project fund. We have benefitted from a number of bequests over the years and others may wish to consider if this is something they might like to include in their own wills. If you should choose to do so, I extend my thanks on behalf of the PCC and Treasurers of the future!
On behalf of the finance team, Sarah Stringer, Jenny Scragg, Arthur and myself, thank you for making the financial aspects of last year so supportive and reassuring.
Tony Price (Treasurer)
