Section C Objectives and activities

Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document

Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

1) the care and protection of Dobermanns which are in need of care and attention by reason of homelessness, maltreatment, poor circumstances, ill-usage or similar causes, and the prevention of cruelty to and suffering among the Dobermann breed.

2) the education of the public as to humane principles and correct treatment of the Dobermann breed.

Travel : following contact with their owner, to collect or receive into the care of the Charity the dogs which no longer have a safe and secure environment

Provision of a safe environment : by means of care within a secure and safe foster home or kennel location

Rehabilitation : to work with the dogs in our care to enable them to recover their trust in people and to become able to adapt to their new lifestyle, this includes training and other specific areas of support

Veterinary care: including but not limited to veterinary checks when they arrive in our care, medication as required, neutering, veterinary advice as required.

Rehoming : Undertaking home checks to ensure the suitability of the adopter, travel to the home with the dog or alternatively undertake a Meet & Greet with all family members and other dogs in the home at a secure field at the kennel location which we rent. The rehoming process may take more than one visit, the dogs are able to be returned to the Charity if the rehoming doesn’t go according to plan.

Fundraising : through dog shows, events, auctions, number boards, merchandise sales, raffles in order to raise awareness of the Rescue and to raise funds to cover running costs

Public Benefit : by educating the public about the needs and correct and responsible behaviours towards the Dobermann breed, we are able to assist adopting families as well as the families who surrender their dogs into our care. We provide a resource to support families who need advice and guidance in

relation to elements of training for their Dobermann. Much of this information is provided to a potential adopter prior to them having a Meet & Greet with the dog. Wherever possible, our Trustees will visit families and their dogs in their home in order to see if the dog can stay in the current home.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

The period of this report has seen the Charity take in and rehome 94 dogs with 8 remaining in kennels or foster. Our reputation is growing as we put time and effort into the assessment and rehabilitation of our dogs and as a result, we find ourselves contacted more and more to take dogs into our care. There seems to be an increase in our being asked to take young dogs which may have been purchased during lockdown. When the family circumstances change and the dog is left alone, behavioural issues can often occur.

Two of our Trustees are studying to qualify as trainers so that we are better placed to work with the dogs which come into our care, as well as the adopters prior to or following rehoming. When the dog is ready for rehoming our Rehoming Trustee/Trainer completes a full and detailed assessment of what we know, thus enabling us to provide sufficient information to the potential adopter to enable them to understand what training they will need to carry on with/undertake when they take the dog into their home. She provides ongoing support to the adopter until the dog is settled in the home. Additionally, the adopter gets training resources both via email and on our Rehoming Group to ensure that they have access to the correct information to support the dogs Rehoming journey.

We have the use of a Registered Kennel facility when our foster homes are not available; we do try to ensure that dogs in need of additional support have the benefit of a foster home rather than a kennel environment. For the older dogs, those that come to us malnourished or have specific medical needs or behavioural requirements, we would always endeavour to find a foster home.

The dogs in kennels are assessed prior to rehoming and a home check is undertaken. We use a Charity who have home checkers throughout the UK as logistically it isn’t possible for us to homecheck without their support. A member of the team is allocated to be the contact with each adoption to ensure that the adopter has a point of contact for any eventuality. We also provide training support to families which adopt / foster any of our dogs on request so that they can understand how to help the dog to enjoy a safe and secure forever home.

Our former Chair resigned her role due to ill health in May of 2021, we have strengthened the Trustee structure as our reputation has grown. We have appointed a new Chair and other Trustees with the skills required to continue to take the Charity forward.

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

It is our policy to hold free, non- restricted funds that can be utilised in order to achieve our aims and objectives.
