Objectlves and ac15vities
The Introduction of the Welsh Govemrnent Community First Initiative was lo combat povety and
deprivation in Welsh communities. Its development transpired the working partnership between Church,
Volunteer Sector, Local Government and people of those Communities, that were arguably of high
deprivats'on, with Minority Ethnic people enjoying little or no benefrts.
People over 50 years of age were greatly affected. Having made their contribution lo the econofflic
wealth of our society, they were more likety to succumb lo some kind of disability. Their need for some
form of recognition and fair representstion did not bring satisfying results.
Age Alive was created lo address those shortfalls, in giving people the opportunity lo get their voices
heard, more so those of ethnic minority communities.
Age Alive's objective is lo develop the capacity and skills of members of BME Over 50s of the socialty
di$advanlaged community of Newport and District in such a way that they are better able to identify and
help to meet their needs.. In Creative Vvriling. Performing Art, story-telling, Choir singing, Handcraft,
Walking, Swimming, Healthy eating, Exercise. enabling them to participate more fully in society-

Achievements and performance
The year 2023 began in an atmosphere of celebration, both personal and the group as a whole. The
hair was awarded the BEM and the group was given notice of becoming a recipient of the St David's
Awards for Wales.
In the ten-year written documenlary"IT Will Never Work. and 'Silent V0￿es., Asian embers telling their
stories were progressing well.
Unfortunately, the warni hub project had to be Shelved due to the workload of interviewing sessions.
However, people were too busy telling their stories and haring their experiences there wasn't a moment
lost lo loneliness_
With the fast-approaching ending to the tsuenty, ￿enty-three funding stream, in a matter of months, it
was lime to look ahead and make plans for a new project that could meet the group's demands over the
coming years. "Supporting Needs" was new idea that would have at its core a support worker created
as a Ihree-year project. This would be a medium-sized gran thatwould maintain the position of a SUPF)Ort
wother and the activities the group undertakes over the year.
Thanks lo David Berry of GAVO who was a tremendous help in navigating the application and the
guidance of Honey Hambley, the lottery community funding Officer in reaching a successful ¢onclusion.
Age Alive can look ft)rward with pride knowing that they are lunded for anotherthree years and a support
worker to tske lo maintain the technical aspe¢t of the organization.
As the unfolding pages ol dete￿in￿ attitudes ignite the resolute spirits championing diversity reach
out into the wider communities, discharging all traces of despondency hearts and minds come alive,
eyes scanned the sceptical words, 'It Will Never Work.. Eighteen months of planning slipped by though
the was the group is well and truty rooted. Their len-year celebration for the tenth of July ￿enty ￿enty-
four articulates the kind of achievements that makes everyone proud. it was the kind of success that
gives the most sceptic difficulty retracting their opinions.
The group was created to allow everyone to get their voices heard, they believe in making changes and
the group's achievement of twenty hventy-three is no reason to avoid progress changes. Plans for the
next three years from tsventy-four lo ￿enty-Seven would provide the funds for a Support Worker, and
routine activities. like day trips, exercise, walkin9, workshops, and swimming sessions. There's no
reason to think tWenty-￿enty-fourW0U1d beco￿ another successful year ofgrowth. monetary, meeting
the needs of a wider community and inspiring the interest of younger people.
Sitting in the cinema seat I became transfixed by a screen displaying the words. Vmndrush 75, with me
playing an important role makes me feel proud, and in some ways appears lo become my greatest
achievement.
