Section C Objectives and activities
| Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit) |
1: The advancement of the Christian religion for the benefit of the public by supporting the reordering, improvement, enhancement, restoration, maintenance and repair of St. Osmund's church, in the Diocese of Salisbury, its monuments, fixtures, fittings, furniture, stained glass, ornaments, other chattels and its churchyard and access. 2. To advance the education of the public in the heritage of St. Osmund’s Church and Osmington Parish, by providing information on its history and architecture. |
|---|---|
| The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. The church is an essential element of the small village community but lacks basic facilities such as toilets, catering, lighting and flexibility in its lay out. It also suffers from poor access having a steep approach which is difficult for old residents to access. The aim is to improve facilities for the parishioners and local residents of the village and to provide a more flexible, useable and relevant centre which can be used to stage community events, heritage displays, concerts and plays, working alongside the nearby village hall. All of these modifications require funds. A series of small events has been staged to raise an initial fighting fund to commence the projects. We will now move onto seeking larger grants and donations from institutions and other philanthropic organisations that support such causes across the church community. |

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main The fund-raising environment remains difficult against the background achievements of the charity cost-of-living challenges and inflation. The Charity must fish for funds in during the year a very small pond where lots of others also float their hooks in search of cash. We have offered a wide variety of events over the past year hoping to attract residents who want ‘something different’ within this small, rural Dorset community. Such a programme is ‘people power’ intense and the trustees work hard setting up the village hall for events, preparing food and delivering variety. We have changed our tactics in response. A series of informed lectures have been developed, charging no direct entry fees and relying on attendee donations into specially constructed boxes. This has also provided an export opportunity – delivering the presentations to other villages and organisations around the local area. We shall continue to grow this new angle and more titles are now being developed. As explained above, St Osmund’s church lacks basic infrastructure which limits its flexibility and use. It has excellent harmonics and could be used much more for musical events – choir concerts, organ recitals, singers etc if we can provide its missing albeit basic facilities. At the same time, we are aware of the high maintenance and sustainment costs of such an aged building which are themselves a challenge for the Parochial Church Council (PCC) with a tiny congregation and a Padre who covers 4 other churches and is also a reservist in the army. Our plan is to exploit the history of Saint Osmund himself (he is the Patron Saint of boils, ruptures, toothache and insanity}, the painter John Constable who lived in the village for 6 months and another leading artist, one Mr Talbot Hughes, who is buried in the Church grounds, will be developed in the near future. We will continue to aim to stage at least 4 fundraising events during the coming years. Progress, however, will not be rapid and this will be de facto a most lengthy campaign demanding ever more innovative ways of achieving income. There appear to be no immediate ‘quick fixes and thus steady progress to build towards the sums required demands patience and gradual growth whilst also maintaining community support. Efforts to work with other fund-raising elements within the community have not been successful to date, however, we live in the hope that joint, combined efforts alongside other organisations and societies may increase the pace in the future. the importance of Public Benefit remains to the fore – the closure of the one village pub has had a visibly detrimental effect on community cohesion and along with our fund-raising efforts we aim to fill a gap in the social life and times of this small, diverse Parish.

Section E Financial review
The value of funds as of 31 December 2023 was £14,163 (2022: Brief statement of the £11,515). All of these funds come from local fundraising activities held charity’s policy on reserves since June 2016, when the re-ordering project was launched. It is our intention to build up these immediately available funds to cover the upfront project costs required to achieve the necessary design, approvals and permissions needed prior to the 2-phase re-ordering exercise. In addition, the PCC have agreed to release church funds to help create the conditions necessary for construction activity to commence. Details of any funds materially We realise the need to apply for and obtain larger grants for the main in deficit construction activities of the re-ordering exercise.
