Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

  1. During the whole of the period, it was only possible to open Dymchurch’s Martello Tower 24 to the Public on one day. The reasons for this were:

  2. a. a second season of seagulls nesting on the gun deck, which is one of the Tower’s main attractions, and,

  3. b. English Heritage’s failure to clean the inside of the building to the standard necessary for public admission.

  4. Our Trustees continued regular maintenance checks of the tower, reporting same to English Heritage.

  5. Many concerns about the physical condition of the Tower have also been reported to English Heritage. As last year, we still await their proposals for making good these defects.

  6. Due to the efforts of our Trustees, we have managed to avoid seagull nesting in 2024 by a combination of vigilance and netting, which we purchased. English Heritage have recently (August 2024) supplied new netting that should be easier to remove and refit on the days that we open.
