Chairmans Report 2025
Yet another busy year, firstly a big thanks to the trustees, steering group members and all the volunteers who have helped over the past 12 months. Geraldine and I are standing down as trustees as we have both served three terms however, we will still both be on the steering group. We have recruited Nick and Jo Jarvis as new trustees, and Ann Edwards has agreed to be chair for the next 12 months.
Sadly, Serena Inskip one of our founder members died earlier this year and a bench is being installed in Grove Piece in her memory. Crispin Chalker kindly donated some oak slab for its construction.
We held the annual bioblitz in July and Dorothy Casey educated us all in identifying grasses amongst other things.
We had a stand at the village show and Christmas bazaar
There were the usual work parties maintaining the trees in Grove Woods and sessions in Vicarage Grove clearing holly and felling a couple of dead ash beside the footpaths. The Coasts and Heaths volunteer team also helped with holly clearance.
We organised a first aid course and were joined by members of the Commons Group and Rob from Ecotherapy at Bramfield.
On the wildlife side the barn owls raised two chicks, a chick we had ringed in 2022 was found dead at Theberton in September 24. The 35 tit nest boxes in Grove Woods produced 135 blue tits (some 50 less than 2022) and 11 great tits (21 in 2022) an significant decrease on previous year’s most likely due to the poor spring weather, several broods died just before fledging presumably because of a lack in food supply. As the scrub starts to establish the numbers of robins, wrens and long tailed tits are increasing.
John has continued improving the web site and it has details of our latest project.
A Friends evening was held and as promised at last years meeting, we were able to announce the acquisition of an additional 4.5 acres of land. The basic plan was presented and further ideas sought as to how it was to develop including from the primary school.
Now known as St Peters Pightle the field belonging to the Church Charity at the end of Church Lane is being leased for 25 years by which time it should be a small wood.
Some 3200 native hardwood trees were planted over the winter by 36 volunteers and several classes from the primary school. Two ponds were dug and the perimeter ditch restored which should reduce flooding in the main street.
A 2.5 acre plot has been sown with a grass/wildflower mix funded by our local district councillors, we’re still waiting for rain!
The entrance gate, pedestrian gate and fence were paid for by a grant from the AONB Community and Conservation Fund.
We are in the process of setting up a tree nursey in conjunction with the primary school funded by the Parish Council.
Further planting will take place next winter and will include a number of fruit trees to create a community orchard.
