## **Dementia Matters in Powys AGM Chair’s Report for Year April 1st 2023 to March 31 2024**

Dementia Matters in Powys (DMiP) is a small, independent Charity providing support services to those living with Dementia and their Carers across the County of Powys. The people we support fall into the high risk category, so the way we operate has to have safety at the forefront of our thinking, whilst maintaining a sensitive and humanistic approach.

This year DMiP continued to run four Meeting Centres at Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, Newtown and Welshpool. Llandrindod Wells Meeting Centre venue transferred to Howey Village Hall.

DMiP has continued to deliver our mission of bringing people together to innovate, learn, share and support through involvement in dementia initiatives and a third successful Summer Games brought together members and carers from all the Meeting Centres in Powys.

It is encouraging to see that DMiP has continued to provide important input into strategic and operational work across Powys. This includes the All Wales Dementia Care Standards Community Engagement work, the Community Engagement Workstream group and the Improvement Cymru Active Listening Campaign. In addition we are represented on the Dementia Standards Programme Board, Dementia Leads Steering Group and the Powys Older People’s Forum. DMiP coordinated the well-attended and well-received Powys Dementia Conference. The Meeting Centres held Open Door sessions with varying levels of community engagement.

DMiP has continued to deliver meeting centres, support carers and provide telephone support whilst working in partnership with other support agencies such as the Alzheimer’s Society.

During the year DMiP has operated without a Finance and Admin Officer, appointing a temporary bookkeeper and using Xero, a finance software package.

Our DMiP website has continued to operate well with minimal development costs as a Wix package was used.

The majority of the DMiP Meeting Centre costs and half of the time of the existing Development Officer team were funded through a 2 year National Lottery Community Fund in Wales grant. The remainder of grants secured via the Moondance Foundation and the Shaw Foundation in the previous financial

year continued to contribute to Chief Officer and Monitoring Officer salary costs. However, funding uncertainty and the resulting constraints, led to the loss of the Development Officer team members in January. Financial assistance was provided for 3 months by the Rural Partnership Board to allow continuation of the Meeting Centres whilst a strategic replanning was undertaken.

Trustees provided invaluable assistance during the year from reviewing and updating strategic documents, attending external meetings, providing Finance support and supporting Meeting Centres and the Summer Games event.

Our volunteers continue to provide invaluable support and the BMC Volunteers won the ‘Voluntary Group of the Year’ Award at the Brecon Town Council Volunteer Awards

From feedback received, we know that the people we support and their carers have really appreciated the services offered by DMiP.

A big thank you to all the staff, wonderful volunteers and also to my fellow trustees for their most valuable support in the background.

## **Independent examiner’s report to the trustees of Dementia Matters in Powys**

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Dementia Matters in Powys for the year ended 31 March 2024.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity trustees of Dementia Matters in Powys you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the Charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

I have completed by examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Dementia Matters in Powys as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
