Healthy Abingdon: Charity Number 1172245

Annual Report

Trustees’ Annual Report for 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2023

Governance

Healthy Abingdon is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Foundation model) registered in England and Wales on 24 March 2017. We are governed by our constitution which came into force on our registration date, along with our policies and procedures adopted by the trustees after formation. Our charity number is 1172245.

Our purpose is to bring together community groups, statutory groups, and individuals to find ways to improve health and wellbeing in the town of Abingdon including neighbouring small communities for which Abingdon is the centre. Our beneficiaries are people in this area.

Our trustees during the year were,

David Butterworth FREng (chair) Tim Hayes (elected 3 July 2023)) Olga Kozlowska PhD (resigned 12 September 2022) Catherine McNeill Cllr Helen Pighills

We have a procedure for appointing trustees which includes an application form, references from two referees and a meeting of the potential trustee with the existing trustees.

To facilitate good interaction between community groups and other service providers, we invite these groups to become Health Abingdon Associates. These Associate are invited to our public meetings and in order to discuss ideas with us and to network with other groups. Each Associate also has an information page on our web site in to tell the public what it does.

The registered address for the charity is

29 Clevelands Abingdon Oxfordshire, OX14 2EQ

Progress during the year

Our main event for the year was an event we called Abingdon Healthfest 2022. This is the second year we ran the event. We set up gazebos in Abingdon Marketplace on Saturday 3 September to enable groups which encouraged and help people to improve their health and well-being to engage with the public. Twentythree groups were present. The event was opened by the Town Crier and the Mayor attended to talk to the stallholders and public.

The groups attending found it a useful way of telling people about what they do.

One area of Abingdon is amongst 20 per cent of the most deprived in England. We have continued work with the Oxfordshire County Council Steering Group which is finding ways to improve people’s lives in this area. As our contribution to this, we have proposed that Healthy Abingdon should set up a Junior Parkrun in the area and have started the process of setting this up.

We had a stall at the Abingdon Clubs and Societies Day in the Abingdon Guildhall on 28 March and use this to promote our activities and to seek people who might help us with the Junior Parkrun. We found considerable interest in the Junior Parkrun from people with children.

Our future plans

In view of the success of Abingdon Healthfest in 2022, we have decided to make this an annual event.

Following the long period of Zoom meetings, we are looking at reintroducing live events which enable community groups, statutory groups and the public to listen to one another and to network. Such meetings were popular and effective before the Pandemic.

Finances

As a charity with turnover below £25k, trustees have agreed that we keep receipts/payments accounts and that we do not need an independent assessment. These accounts are shown in the Appendix.

As we have no paid staff or other ongoing financial commitments, trustees have agreed that we only need to hold a small reserve of £200 to cover basic expenses were we to lose our current funding. This will give us about a year to find new funding or close the charity without any debts.

Most of our income comes from charitable trusts and in small grants from local councils.

We estimate that trustees for the charity gave about 740 hours of their time during the year to the charity which at the National Living Wage would equate to over £7700.

Declaration

The trustees declare that they have approved the above report and the following accounts.
