**Oxford Bach Soloists**

**Charitable Incorporated Organisation Trustees’ Annual Report Year ended 31st August 2023**

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

The CIO was established to promote, maintain, improve and advance the education of the public in the arts, culture, and heritage, and in particular (but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing), the arts of orchestral, choral and other music.

Since the previous Annual Report (and since our founding) there has been no change to the CIO’s principal charitable objectives and activities, which are:

1. the organisation and/or presentation of concerts of high educational and artistic merit, conferences, lectures and recordings;

2. the organisation and presentation of concerts and collaborations with schools and other places of education; and

3. by such other means as the Board of Directors shall from time to time determine.

This includes the organisation and promotion of concerts and the facilitation and organisation of other engagements such as workshops, lectures, and recordings in the United Kingdom and abroad. Alongside the core performances, the CIO is committed to providing additional opportunities for professional development and education through complementary projects and mentoring. In furtherance of these objectives the CIO engages international singers and instrumentalists, artists, performers and repetiteurs; additionally, the CIO engages skilled professional and technical advisers such as language and vocal coaches, musicologists, historians, and keyboard technicians.

The Trustees have reviewed the Charity’s objectives and activities and acknowledged that they have paid due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission as noted in Section 4 of the Charities Act 2011. The CIO fulfilled its objectives by presenting 37 concerts and other performances. The Choral Scholarship scheme was in place for this period, and ten scholarships were offered between September 2022 and August 2023. The Trustees express the objectives in a ‘Mission Statement’ and monitor its activities/initiatives against this.

## **ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE**

From 1st September 2022 to 31st August 2023, the Oxford Bach Soloists gave 22 concerts to a total of 5470 audience members (4110 in person, 1360 online). They also took part in 12 workshops and masterclasses.

This series was designed: to provide a platform for the choral scholars to perform together; and to ensure that the charity had regular monthly concerts between October 2022 and March 2023.

- 1 live concert in New College Chapel, performing the yearly J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. (December 2022).

**Oxford Bach Soloists Charitable Incorporated Organisation Trustees’ Annual Report Year ended 31st August 2023**

## Workshops and Masterclasses

- 9 workshops with Dr Pegram Harrison, as part of his teaching for the Saïd Business School, demonstrating Collaboration and Leadership skills needed in successful music-making. (September 2022 - June 2023)

- 1 masterclass with tenor Nick Pritchard for the choral scholars in St Peter’s College Chapel. This event was not open to the public. (February 2023)

- 1 masterclass with bass Alex Ashworth for the choral scholars in St Peter’s College Chapel. This event was not open to the public. (June 2023)

- 1 masterclass with German coach Gerhard Gall for the choral scholars in Clore Music Studios. This event was not open to the public. (July 2023)

Private Events

- 1 live performance at the charity’s annual Friends Day, consisting of a private recital from the choral scholars to the Friends and supporters.

In July 2022, the Board of Trustees decided to cancel 3 live concerts of cantatas by J.S. Bach in New College Chapel, due to a delay in major sponsorship funds arriving. This meant that, although the regular concert series restarted in April 2022, it was paused again in July 2022. These delayed funds arrived in September 2022, allowing the charity’s musical activity to resume in October 2022. Therefore, the decision was taken to embark on another bespoke 6 concert series, this time focussing on Bach’s choral motets. It was decided that this type of series would be the cornerstone of the organisation’s artistic output until appropriate funds were raised to ensure that the regular concert series could be continued over a sustained period.

During this period, the Oxford Bach Soloists’ network of Friends and sponsors continued to support the organisation. Many continued to renew their memberships despite the two cancelled concerts in the previous period. Within this reporting period, the organisation managed to acquire 23 new Friends and supporters, increasing the active base of ongoing memberships to 133.

Continuing to create and distribute content online in this period, and in particular collaborating with other groups online, has been an excellent way of ensuring that we

## **Oxford Bach Soloists Charitable Incorporated Organisation Trustees’ Annual Report Year ended 31st August 2023**

are connecting with our network of sponsors. In May 2022, the group trialled an online platform named ‘Digital Concerts’, allowing current Friends to access any own-promoted concerts in New College Chapel online. This was continued throughout the 2022-23 period, with all of the organisation’s own promoted concerts being streamed onto the platform. The scheme attracted 33 subscribers during this period.

The Choral Scholarship scheme, which was launched in 2018, was continued for the academic year 2022-23, following its relaunch for the 2021-22 academic year, after its cancellation in 2020-21 due to the lack of activity during the pandemic. There were ten scholarships for 2022-23 and these scholarships provide a unique opportunity for young aspiring singers to develop their solo singing within the musical programme of the Oxford Bach Soloists. Choral Scholars are appointed for a single academic year (September to August) and make up the core of the chorus, helping to maintain its musical integrity. Choral Scholars develop their skills by taking on the challenges of step-out solos during concerts and receive one-to-one expert German language coaching as part of their training, as well as extensive one-to-one mentoring from the Artistic Director of Oxford Bach Soloists.

The recruitment cycle for a fifth cohort of Choral Scholars was activated in May 2023, and another cohort of ten Choral Scholars were engaged for the academic year starting in September 2023.

The Oxford Bach Soloists’ newsletter captures the experiences of the musicians as they journey through the complete vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach, and is sent out to over 1000 followers every month.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

This was the sixth operating period of the charity. The proceeds from concerts were £77,207 in the 12-month period, compared with costs of £201,603. Some of the shortfall has been covered by general fundraising from Friends (£9,879), and from general donations (£130,512). The charity also received a restricted donation (£20,000) to complete a particular artistic project. There is a surplus of £35,997 calculated on a cash basis. The Charity secured funding from an individual donor which started in 2020-21, and which allowed significant growth and secured funds to pay musicians. This funding

**Oxford Bach Soloists**

**Charitable Incorporated Organisation Trustees’ Annual Report Year ended 31st August 2023**

was terminated in December 2023, and the charity is now searching for funds to replace this potential shortfall for 2024-25.

Proceeds from concerts and general fundraising are lower than the previous period, as the activity had been reduced in order to ensure the organisation’s longevity. General fundraising per month has increased since the previous period, as the organisation seeks for more funding to restart the regular monthly cantata concerts.

Fees paid to musicians decreased over the period, as well as the general administration costs. The musicians’ fees decreased due to fewer engagements across the period, and also due to the smaller forces required for the Motets series. Though the spend on salaries was slightly higher during this period, the general administration costs decreased. This is due to fewer administration staff being employed on a freelance basis by the charity, and fewer funds being spent on both marketing and PR consultancy. £4,130 of the spend this year was the repayment of a short term loan from 2021-22.

At the end of the financial period, the Charity held assets of £82,217. These assets are adequate to provide the charity with working capital and the Trustees do not believe them to be excessive. Work continues to build a strong base of regular donors through the Friends programme and to sponsor the appointment of choral scholars. The charity does not break even on all the concerts which it performs, though it aims to be sustainable over a full 12-month period.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**

are recognised as income earned from the provision of goods and services as income from charitable activities.

**Settlement of insurance** Insurance claims are only included in the SoFA when the general income recognition criteria **claims** are met (5.10 to 5.12 FRS102 SORP) and are included as an item of other income in the SoFA.

**Investment gains and losses** This includes any realised or unrealised gains or losses on the sale of investments and any gain or loss resulting from revaluing investments to market value at the end of the year.

## **2.3 EXPENDITURE AND LIABILITIES**

**Liability recognition** Liabilities are recognised where it is more likely than not that there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources and the amount of the obligation can be measured with reasonable certainty.

Support costs have been allocated between governance costs and other support. **Governance and support costs** Governance costs comprise all costs involving public accountability of the charity and its compliance with regulation and good practice.

Support costs include central functions and have been allocated to activity cost categories on a basis consistent with the use of resources, eg allocating property costs by floor areas, or per capita, staff costs by the time spent and other costs by their usage.

Where the charity gives a grant with conditions for its payment being a specific level of **Grants with performance conditions** service or output to be provided, such grants are only recognised in the SoFA once the recipient of the grant has provided the specified service or output.

Where there are no conditions attaching to the grant that enables the donor charity to **Grants payable without** realistically avoid the commitment, a liability for the full funding obligation must be **performance conditions** recognised.

**Redundancy cost** The charity made no redundancy payments during the reporting period.

**Deferred income** No material item of deferred income has been included in the accounts.

The charity has creditors which are measured at settlement amounts less any trade discounts

**Creditors**

A liability is measured on recognition at its historical cost and then subsequently measured **Provisions for liabilities** at the best estimate of the amount required to settle the obligation at the reporting date

The charity accounts for basic financial instruments on initial recognition as per paragraph **Basic financial instruments** 11.7 FRS102 SORP. Subsequent measurement is as per paragraphs 11.17 to 11.19, FRS102 SORP. **2.4 ASSETS Tangible fixed assets for** These are capitalised if they can be used for more than one year, and cost at least **use by charity**

They are valued at cost.

The depreciation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.2. **Intangible fixed assets** The charity has intangible fixed assets, that is, non-monetary assets that do not have physical substance but are identifiable and are controlled by the charity through custody or legal rights. The amortisation rates and methods used are disclosed in note 9.5

They are valued at cost.

**Heritage assets** The charity has heritage assets, that is, non-monetary assets with historic, artistic, scientific, technological, geophysical or environmental qualities that are held and maintained principally for their contribution to knowledge and culture. The depreciation rates and methods used as disclosed in note 9.6.1.4. They are valued at cost. **Investments** Fixed asset investments in quoted shares, traded bonds and similar investments are valued at initially at cost and subsequently at fair value (their market value) at the year end. The same treatment is applied to unlisted investments unless fair value cannot be measured reliably in which case it is measured at cost less impairment.

Investments held for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash equivalents with a maturity date of less than 1 year are treated as current asset investments

**Stocks and work in** Stocks held for sale as part of non-charitable trade are measured at the lower or cost or net **progress** realisable value.

Goods or services provided as part of a charitable activity are measured at net realisable value based on the service potential provided by items of stock.

Work in progress is valued at cost less any foreseeable loss that is likely to occur on the contract.

|**Debtors**
Debtors (including trade debtors and loans receivable) are measured on initial recognition at
settlement amount after any trade discounts or amount advanced by the charity. Subsequently,
they are measured at the cash or other consideration expected to be received.
**Current asset investments**
The charity has has investments which it holds for resale or pending their sale and cash and cash
equivalents with a maturity date less than one year. These include cash on deposit and cash
equivalents with a maturity date of less than one year held for investment purposes rather than to
meet short term cash commitments as they fall due.
They are valued at fair value except where they qualify as basic financial instruments.|Yes
No
N/a|Yes
No
N/a|Yes
No
N/a|
