Trustees Annual Report 1[st] October 2023 to 30[th] September 2024
The Charity Object: to advance the education of the Public in subjects related to sustainable development and the protection, enhancement and rehabilitation of the environment by the provision of workshops, advice and support about the promotion of sustainable living using technology and good practice.
Notes to the accounts:
Receipts: Donations, product sales and courses fees were all up on the previous year, but Grants applied for were down on last year.
Payments : Water and energy costs increased but the main increase was for improvements such as the kitchen revamp and development of the garden for demonstrations. The cost of courses increased in line with the course receipts.
Achievements:
An Autumn and a 16-week summer ecotherapy course were completed for Burton & District Mind, and the results were good in giving attendees a sense of achievement and self-belief. Having run the courses since Covid it was felt the courses needed a different approach so was successfully handed to Little Trees an organisation who now run them. Forest Harvest continues helping people who have finished the formal course by running a less formal free weekly gardening group. This Wednesday group now includes a number of local people from Uttoxeter, Burton, Fradley and Lichfield who enjoy meeting up, keen on gardening and who don’t necessarily come from a course for improving mental health. Improvements have been made by the group by also volunteering in the gardens.
In January FH attended the Cathedral Volunteers Fair to raise the charities profile and are helped by Support Staffordshire at other times. Other volunteers come from the Burton Conservation Volunteers who visited twice, and Eagles Nest an organisation which helps children who do not attend school.
The site now costs less to run and has more amenities on offer so we can become more sustainable and self-reliant. Both polytunnels offer undercover all seasons working areas, and a new drying room was used in collecting flax seeds and experimenting with the fibres. The Hop-Henge creates an exciting meeting place to celebrate the pagan Festivals such as mid-summer and the equinoxes.
Getting back to the rhythms of the natural world for those that attend.
