9. FoAL Groups. The Chair, Alison Evans also asked the organisers of each group activity within FoAL to give a report on their group.
Family History Group. Met monthly in the library until Lockdown in March 2020. They have a WhatsApp group and an Email Group and from June have met on Skype on a monthly basis. Some of the meetings are themed and the group help each other with research. There are 7-8 members at meeting. Carole Turner from Adlington Library informed the meeting that Family and Local History sites usually accessed in the library can now be accessed at home using a library card number. Details of this will be sent to members.
French Group… met weekly on a Monday before lockdown. They now meet using Skype every week and are progressing well. Numbers have gone down to 5 but it is hoped this will increase again once FoAL can use the library again.
ICT Group… this is run by Lancashire Adult Learning. Now meet using Zoom. Just Andrea Barnard from FoAL involved with this at the moment although 12 do the couse, some from Colne and Leyland.
Andrea informed the meeting that Lancashire Adult Learning are doing a number of courses on line and can be accessed on their website.
Play and Stay ….this will start up again once FoAL can use the library. Some new equipment has been purchased.
Book Club …..has not run during lockdown.
10. Future Projects and Events.
Lancashire Day. This is planned for November 2021 with a week of events, films, and displays. We have a Coop grant for this which finishes in November. The current amount for this is about £500 but goes up all the time. Some of the grant will be paid in April and the rest in November.
Postponed VE Day event. This was due to take place in May 2020. Once large groups can meet again we will have this event. The money for the evening part of the event is not included in the FoAL accounts because it is part of Adlington Mayors Charity fund. The FoAL section of the event had no charge. The refunding of this money will be discussed with Adlington Town Council. When we can have an event there will be no charge as we received a small grant for it in 2019.
11. AOB
Films for All… The screen has been put up in the library. The equipment has been paid for and is being stored by Soundsmith in Kendal until it can be delivered to the library and training can be given once lockdown restrictions are over.
Defibrilator. The ‘Ready’ button on the machine has stopped flashing. The battery and pads have been checked and are valid until Nov 2023. Mike and Andrea Barnard have looked at the machine and believe that it needs a reboot with the library WiFi. This will be done once we can use the library again.
Bookbench. We have still not had a bill for this. There will be a Bookbench/Whats My Story Chorley event in April 2021. This will be partly virtual and partly actual depending on what covid restrictions are in place. More details will be sent out once we receive them from Chorley Borough Council and Edge Hill College. FoAL’s bookbench is outside YouthZone in Chorley.
Carole Turner of Adlington Library informed the meeting that modernisation work on the heating is to be carried out in the library. The work may involve moving one of FoAL’s display cabinets but will not have much impact. Work is also to be done on the library WiFi.
12 Next AGM will be held in February 2022, Hopefully inside the library date to be confirmed.
The meeting closed at 8.15pm
Appendix 1
Chair’s Report for year ending 31 Dec 2020
Welcome to the Friends of Adlington Library AGM 2021.
A special thank you to our secretary Caroline, who, throughout lockdown has kept everyone in contact with FoAL and library news and developments. She has tirelessly maintained communication with members and organisations, including Lancashire County Council and the wider network of organisations we have links with. On 21[st] March 2020, Caroline emailed members to let them know that the library was closing the following Monday at 5pm. Since then, Caroline’s emails have provided information and kept us up to date: library opening times, changes to service, the everevolving arrangements for proposed and future events, quizzes and a range of online and remote activities to keep us active, challenged and engaged.
Thank you to all our volunteers and members for their ongoing involvement and contributions. You have all, maybe without even realising it, supported friends’ and neighbours’ in different ways – recommending a book, delivering shopping, making a phone call, sending an email, offering help - in a year where the simplest acts made the most difference.
Events and Activities:
Pokemon display, March 14[th] – a popular event which was attended by children of all ages who had opportunities to ask questions, chat with like-minded fans and play with the many Pokemon toys, cards and items brought in by Ellis Evans. Young people attended from far and wide, including Bamber Bridge!
Online activities and events - Sadly, March saw our Coffee morning, planned and wellestablished calendar events and activities suspended. Since then Caroline has emailed
regularly with book lists, video clips, Remembrance links, Friends For You notices, Lancashire Library online events and activities.
Book Bench:
Although he Book-bench painting had been completed just before last year’s AGM in February, the bench was still to be varnished and put on display. What’s Your Story Chorley 2020 was scheduled for March but as we know did not go ahead due to the nationwide lockdown. Our book bench is situated outside the Youth Zone in Chorley and can be seen from the dual carriageway. I hope that when you drive or walk past it, you’re reminded of the fun everybody had painting it and the joy of those days spent together. Looking forward to getting our hand on another one. What's Your Story Chorley will run this year, on Saturday April 24th 2021, as a hybrid event with a mixture of online and open-air events (namely the book bench trail) circumstances permitting. An assessment of all the benches has taken place and CBC are approaching Chris to carry out some cleaning and repairing ( they have actually faired pretty well).
Quizzes – thank you Wendy, the source of many of our lockdown quizzes, Caroline and everyone who sent them in. Well done to those of you who have completed them all and weller done if got any of the answers right!
Garden Meeting – FoAL members attended a socially distanced meeting held in Caroline’s garden in July,
In Bloom – members of FoAL met up with Adlington in Bloom on Monday 27th July and Thursday 30th July for some socially distanced weeding and replanting on the flower beds and wall around Adlington Library - a bit wet but worth it.
FILMS FOR ALL PROJECT – the committee approved the purchase of the screen and projection equipment in August. The screen has been installed and we’re just waiting for lockdown to end, vaccines for everyone and immunity to increase so we can get back into the library and watch some films together.
Caring Cards: We once again made Christmas cards for the residents of Grove House and Marley Court. Caroline arranged for safe distribution of card making equipment and collection of cards then dropped them off. Although we didn’t get to hand deliver them as we have in the past, it was the next best way to let them know we were thinking about them.
Steering Group:
Caroline and Margaret have been active in communicating with LCC on the following:
-
Films for All – continued negotiations with LCC over price of equipment stalled and eventually the steering group recommended the committee approve the purchase to avoid further delay
-
Further improvements to the library - the film screen has been installed and is fixed to the ceiling of the main library near the children’s area
-
Requests for the outside of the building to be cleaned
-
Request for Christmas tree bracket to be fixed to the front of the library – after an extended email exchange, a little Christmas cheer went up, quote literally, as we received permission to fix a lit tree on the front of the library
-
Co-op funding – funds will be used to fund Lancashire Day events and displays
Thoughts and condolences:
Before I finish, I’d like, on behalf of FoAL, to offer our thoughts to those whose health has been affected by the virus this year and to those who have lost loved ones.
We’d also like to offer our condolences to Richard Cornes, a founder member and supporter of FoAL who lost his daughter Sally to cancer last week. We were deeply saddened by the news and our heartfelt thoughts go to Richard, Jo and Milly.
What’s next?
Finally, thank you for continuing to support FoAL. We hope that over the year we will see the gradual lifting of restrictions and the resumption of activities and events at our library - Saturday mornings, Lancashire day events and displays , talks, crafts, learning and Films for All.
