## Objectives and activities 

To advance the education of the public by assisting in the preservation and restoration of Dawes Twine Works, West Coker, Somerset. This is achieved by recreating the working environment through restoration of machinery and explanatory exhibits. We collect collate, Summary of the objects of the | research, and store material relating to the growing of flax and hemp and charity set out in its how this was used in the rope, sail, and netting industry of West, East and governing document North Coker. 

The research and exhibits focus on the industry in the South Somerset and Dorset area, and also how it affected the global trade and markets. This work is carried out under the auspices of West Coker Parish Council, and Somerset Council. Exhibits are open to the public.

|Trust|(Charity|no.|1120031),|the|primary|aim|being|to|protect|trustees|
|from|potentially|large|personal|liabilities.|Our trustees|are|local|people|
|who|are|closely|involved|with|the|project.|The|CIO|holds|all|the|leases|-|
|the|main|factory|site,|the|visitor|centre|site,|and|the|strip|of|land|to|the|
|north|owned|by|the|neighbouring|Windsor|family.|All|three|leases|are|
|registered.|The|accounts|of the|older Trust were|closed|and|the|funds|
|transferred|to|the|ClO.|The|CIO|also|now|claims|Gift|Aid|instead|of the|
|Trust.|In|early|2025|the|original|trust was|closed|completely.|
|After the|easing|of|Covid|restrictions,|2022|saw the|resumption|of|
|‘normal’|opening,|including|many|group|visits|by|U3As,|Probus,|local|
|history|societies|and|car|clubs.|These|continue.|A|series|of talks was|well|
|received|and|has|been|run|again|for the|third|year.|As|restoration|of the|
|Victorian|works|began|about|16|years|ago,|we|now|find|areas|where|
|repairs|have|to|be|redone,|and|there|is|ongoing|maintenance|of the|
|machinery|and|buildings.|
|A|main|priority|is|to|secure|the|project’s|future.|When|the|CIO was|
|created|during|the|main|restoration|period,|only|3|trustees|were|
|appointed|so|that we|had|a|small|and|effective|set|of|decision|makers.|
|We|have|now|appointed|two|more|trustees|to|reduce|vulnerability.|
|We|played|a|major|part|in|OSR|Projects’|2023|Od|Arts|festivals.|We|have|
|had|some|success|recruit|more|volunteers|from|this|large|wider — and|
|younger —|audience.|
|Our|income|-|which|is|now|almost|entirely|donations|-|continues|to|meet|
|all|our|outgoings,|despite|the|large|increase|in|electricity|costs.|The|
|decisions we made6|years|ago|for the|new|visitor|centre|-|a|heat|pump|
|and|underfloor|heating,|plus|LED|lighting|and|good|insulation|everywhere|
|have|been|proved|correct.|We|are|awaiting|planning|permission|to|install|
|15|solar|panels|on|the|south|facing|roof of you|visitor|centre.|With|these,|
|we|can|restrict|heating|to|the|middle|of the|day.|
