## **Background**

AIH Support became a registered charity (charity number 1171952) under a CIO Foundation Constitution on 8 March 2017. It is a volunteer led and run charity with no employees. All decisions are made by the trustees.

## **Objectives and Activities**

The objectives of AIH Support are the relief of sickness and the promotion of good health among those suffering from the liver condition known as autoimmune hepatitis (AIH).

This will be achieved by providing information, advice and support to patients, carers, health professionals and the public generally. In addition, AIH Support supports and encourages research into AIH.

## **Summary of Achievements**

During this year we have continued to support those affected by autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) despite remaining a very small charity with minimal income. Like many other organisations the impact of the covid-19 pandemic on our activities has been substantial.

Prior to the start of the pandemic, we were able to hold one face to face Patient information Day in conjunction with PSC Support – another charity for people with a rare autoimmune liver disease. We were grateful for the support of Dr Falk Pharma UK Ltd in facilitating and supporting this event. For the first time such an event was held in Wales, in Newport and there was a great turnout to hear presentations from and ask questions to Dr Andrew Yeoman, consultant hepatologist at the Royal Gwent hospital supported by other colleagues. We then shared the information more widely via our Facebook group. Feedback from attendees was excellent.

The covid-19 pandemic has had a major impact on our work. In March 2020 most AIH patients were identified as extremely vulnerable to the virus owing to the medication they are prescribed to control their condition. As a result they were advised to ‘shield’. Detailed information from official sources was initially very sparse. The workload via our Facebook online support group, helping people understand the implications and navigate the situation, increased hugely with over 20,000 interactions in just the first month – a fourfold increase from normal activity. As at 30 September 2020 the group remained very active with over 2,500 members.

There were no further face to face events due to covid regulations.

Fund raising has been hit by the pandemic but we have been able to manage expenditure to cope. Our planned review of medium term expenditure and activity was put on hold given the uncertainties created by covid-19. But is now a key priority as we consider how covid-19 will change our activities going forward.

Gift Aid has been claimed on relevant donations.

The charity continues to represent AIH patients including involvement with UK-AIH the main research ongoing in AIH. In addition, we represent patients on the group looking at re drafting the clinical guidelines for the treatment of AIH and supported researchers in putting together bids for research into AIH. All of these activities have of course been impacted by the covid-19 pandemic but are now picking up.

## **Reserves Policy**

Reserves of 6 months expenditure will be maintained going forward and this policy will be assessed on an annual basis.

In accordance with the Charitable Incorporated Organisation (General) Regulations 2012 the two following points are made:

## **Guarantees**

No guarantees have been given by AIH Support where any potential liability under the guarantee is outstanding at 30 September 2020.

## **Debts**

There are no debts outstanding at 30 September 2020 which is owed by AIH Support and which is secured by an express charge on any of the assets of the CIO.

## **Public benefit**

The trustees confirm that they have had due regard to the published Charity Commission guidance on public benefit in exercising their powers or duties.

## **Future Plans**

We will continue to develop the support to patients via the online group and will continue to explore options to expand the information about AIH available to people affected by it. All against the backdrop of the ongoing covid-19 pandemic.

We will continue to encourage research by providing the patient perspective to researchers and clinicians.

The trustees approved this report on 19 March 2021.
