**All Trustees give their time voluntarily and can receive reasonable expenses incurred in the course of their duties but do not receive any remuneration. Trustees generally do not to claim expenses. Or, if they do, they donate back all or part of the amounts claimed. There have been no related party transactions in the year.** 

**During the year we lost the services of Shail Patel who stepped down as a Trustee. He was a founder member of DMS and an invaluable part of the board team. We are glad that he remains a Member of the Society. Subsequently the Board welcomed Chiyoko Szlavnics and James Mills as new Trustees.** 

**The Dhrupad Music Society (DMS) is a member of Making Music through which it has access to training resources, policies, and various insurances.** 

**DMS has a membership of 127 as at 31/3/24. Members elect the Board of Trustees each year at the AGM. Any adult can become a member on application so long as they are committed to upholding the constitution and values of DMS and have a genuine interest in Dhrupad music.** 

**During the year, two of our Trustees stepped down due to personal reasons. We are most grateful to Chiyoko and James for their service on the Board, and very pleased that they continue as active members and volunteers for DMS.**

- (a) **To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals.** 

- (b) **To advance the education of the general public in the history, heritage, theory and performance of Dhrupad Music and Indian Classical Music in general.**

**DMS has no staff or premises but relies on the voluntary effort of Trustees and, where relevant, any resources from partnerships with other established organisations. In devising our programme of activities, we have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit. Our events are open to the general public, and some are free. Our main activity is to hold a week-long Dhrupad workshop or residential summer school once a year. When possible, this is supplemented with other events such as short workshops, lecture demonstrations and concerts. We also assist younger performers to hold workshops and chamber concerts.** 

## Section D                      Achievements and performance 

**We were pleased to reinstate a full residen1al summer school a5er the Summary of the main achievements of the charity pandemic and its a5ermath. Whilst costs had risen sharply in the during the year intervening years that had to be reflected in increased fees, we are pleased to report that we added two more events to our schedule – a lecture demonstra1on in Cambridge, and a full concert in North London, including a Pakhawaj solo. Between the three events, we attracted 171 par1cipants/audience of which 40% approx. were first-t1me attendees. Summer School par1cipants included people from USA, Finland, Germany, Austria, and Hungary; and from six English Regions. The Cambridge event was educa1onal in nature providing a hosted lecture and demonstra1on. We were also pleased to be working in partnership with a range of community organisa1ons. Trustees are therefore sa1sfied that the society’s ac1vi1es are inclusive and meet the public benefit requirements of being a charity. We are grateful to the University of Hertfordshire, Downing Place URC Cambridge, and the Church of St Mary The Virgin Primrose Hill for being great venue hosts, and to Sama Arts and the Sitar Music Society for helping to promote our events. Most of all our grateful thanks to our dedicated band of volunteers and well-wishers without whose selfless efforts we would not be able to con1nue our work.**

Our aim is to grow that to between £5-10k for these purposes, and to be able to provide match funding in grant**

**We aim to maintain high standards of financial prudence and ethics. The Treasurer has some financial qualifications and experience. We also have a qualified Management Accountant, and a Financial Analyst & Internal Auditor, amongst the Trustees.** 

**Our turnover is below the threshold for external Examination or Audit. Income is sourced from charges for events, which are kept reasonable and affordable; and donations from companies and individuals. Some donations qualify for Gift Aid. DMS is registered with the HMRC for this purpose.** 

**We have a prudent financial strategy to ensure each event covers its costs and makes a small contribution to the overall surplus.**
