Additional governance issues (Optional information)

You may choose to include additional information, where relevant, about:

All Trustees give their time voluntarily and can receive reasonable expenses incurred in the course of their duties but do not receive any remuneration. Trustees generally do not to claim expenses. Or, if they do, they donate back all or part of the amounts claimed. There have been no related party transactions in the year.

During the year we lost the services of Shail Patel who stepped down as a Trustee. He was a founder member of DMS and an invaluable part of the board team. We are glad that he remains a Member of the Society. Subsequently the Board welcomed Chiyoko Szlavnics and James Mills as new Trustees.

The Dhrupad Music Society (DMS) is a member of Making Music through which it has access to training resources, policies, and various insurances.

DMS has a membership of 84. Members elect the Board of Trustees each year at the AGM. Any adult can become a member on application so long as they are committed to upholding the constitution and values of DMS and have a genuine interest in Dhrupad music.

Section C Objectives and activities

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main
achievements of the charity
during the year
The Society’s main activity of holding a Dhrupad vocal residential
summer school could not be held due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, we were in a good position to pilot, and then roll-out, a
series of online Dhrupad courses led by Pt. Uday Bhawalkar,
variously assisted by his senior students, Kirit Singh, Chintan
Upadhyay, Prassanna Vishwanathan and Meghana Sardar.
The pilot was followed by four courses held during the financial
year. Over 100 participants attended. The online format allowed for
more people to participate from all over the world at an affordable
cost. And we were able to provide more support to the artists thereby.
Online teaching has its advantages but nothing can replace the
traditional in-person transmission of musical teaching to which we
look forward to re-instating when circumstances allow. To keep it
accessible and affordable, we may consider a ‘hybrid’ event with live
teaching sessions being available on video for others to follow.

Section E Financial review DMS currently has £7,039 in unrestricted reserves. Reserves are Brief statement of the presently maintained as a risk-buffer and for cash-flow charity’s policy on reserves management. Our aim is to grow that to between £5-10k for these purposes, and to be able to provide match funding in grant applications that we may choose to make in future.
