The trustees of Community Church Leeds have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit when overseeing all of the activities of the charity.

The Charity’s activities of the advancement of the Christian faith and associated activities are available to the people of Leeds and the wider area to make a positive contribution to the local and wider community. These activities include Sunday services, other weekly group activities, pastoral care, community work, care for the poor, supporting asylum seekers and the support of other local charities working in deprived communities through the provision of volunteers.

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

This is the 4th report by the trustees since the Charity was formed on 2 March 2017. The first report and accounts covered the first 18 months of operation.

Over the last year (September 2020 to August 2021), Community Church Leeds has continued to achieve its charitable objectives of advancing the Christian faith through Sunday services, other group activities and work in the local community. The COVID-19 pandemic meant that, as in the previous year, the church had to continue to adapt at times with some Sunday services and other groups moved to online using Zoom. The Church has continued to grow in membership over this period.

Community is at the heart of who we are as Community Church Leeds. Our vision is to be:

A church for the whole city, helping people find friendship with God and discover real hope, life and adventure.
A church of opportunity, where everyone plays a part in the community, growing individually and together into all God has made them to be.
A church for beyond the city boundaries, as we help start similar communities of people in Yorkshire and in other nations.

During the last 12 months we have:

Provided pastoral care, support, community and opportunities to grow in the Christian faith for a growing number of adults, young people and children.
Provided opportunities to explore the Christian faith in a variety of settings including in-person and on zoom.
• Developed community groups in different parts of the city of Leeds which provide care, support and opportunities to work in and for the benefit of local communities.
• Become a church home for a growing number of students who are studying in Leeds and provided them with leadership training and ministry opportunities.
Supported individuals in need, particularly those impacted by the pandemic (both in the UK and overseas)
Developed leadership training and opportunities for spiritual growth for an increasing number of people.
Worked alongside local charities in some of the poorest areas of Leeds. Church members have been able to work with over 1000 people who have directly or indirectly been helped through these charities. We are committed to provide opportunities for people to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Planned to launch a new internship programme with another Leeds-based charity to facilitate international students exploring the Christian faith.
Supported the work of other churches in the UK and overseas particularly through providing on-going advice, coaching and support for community work.

Community Church Leeds is growing. We were encouraged with the growth in income through giving by church members and this underlined our decision to focus our staff to an increasing degree on the work within the city of Leeds rather than supporting churches in other parts of the UK. We received £87,619 in income over the year. Our expenditure was

£80,657 which was lower than expected due to savings made on the hire of premises because of school closures due to the pandemic. We had a surplus of £22,527 on 1 September 2021 which included £531 restricted funds donated to us to support those in need.

The Trustees would like to thank all the members of Community Church Leeds who have given so freely of their time and talents as well as their finances to make possible all the activities reported above and more that space doesn’t allow us to mention. Without the contribution of each of these people, Community Church Leeds would be unable to deliver all the services and activities that it does to the people of Leeds, further afield and internationally. The Trustees are delighted that Community Church Leeds is thriving, growing and able to fulfil its charitable objectives.

a) no guarantees have been given by the Community Church Leeds CIO during the accounting period and therefore there is no potential liability under any guarantee that is outstanding at the date of the statement of assets and liabilities; and

b) there are no debts outstanding at the date of the statement of assets and liabilities which are owed by the CIO and which are secured by an express charge on any of the assets of the CIO.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Community Church Leeds

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of Community Church Leeds (the Charity) for the 12 months ending 31 August 2021. Community Church Leeds is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, entered on the Register of Charities on 2 March 2017 (registered charity number: 1171861).

Responsibilities and Basis of the Report

As the charity trustees of the Charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I report in respect of my examination of the Charity's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent Examiner's Statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect: • accounting records were not kept in respect of the Charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or • the accounts do not accord with those records.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
