Chairn)an's Report 2021
It can truly be said that this was a year without precedentfor Wearside Bridge
Club. Despite a full year without face to face bridge the club has continued to
adaptand thrive. Withoutlockdown l am sure fewof uswould have discovered
online bridge. Through our online bridgesessions we have attracted a number of
new members. There is now no geographic restrictions to membership and we
have players from as far apartas Airdrie and the Isle of Wightl While it has many
advantages nothing can replace the social 2spert ofplaying with friends in a real
club and I hope it will not be too longbefore we can share thatexperience again.
My thanks go to my predecessor, TonyWatson, for his tireless efforts
representing and promotingthe club.
Graham Cox deserves special mention for organising the Lockdown League
which has been a godsend for many of us.And of course this would not have
happened without theWhatsApp group setup by George Farnan.
Chris Patrick has notonlyprovided us with information and entertainrnent
through the quarterlynewsletter, but has organised a number of online team
matches which have attracted popular support.
I would be in trouble if I don'tmention the hardworkofour treasurer Rosemary
Wallace, Rosemaryand Chris were also the driving forces behind the successful
Thursday evening virtual club nighL
And of course special thanks to our secretary, Allan Davies. As well as the
numerous and time consumingduties involved in the dayto dayrunning of the
club he continues to provide weekly online teaching sessions.
Although the opportunities to excel in competiton have been unavoidably
curtsiled, there have nevertheless been some outstaT]dingsuccesses for the club.
There was a superb resultfor Beverley Basquil and Colin Porch who won the
EBU championship pairs (Guardian Trophy) earlierthis year.
In the online NEBA team matches Wearside Blue came a close second In the top
division, tAking the notsble scalp of the even￿21 winners, Brunton Blue in their
match. Wearside Red also performed creditably and contributed to a Wearside
double bybeating Brunton Red in their match.
The team of Anne Urwin, Chris Patrick ]une Ainslie and Michael Wainwright
came second in Session 2 of the Blue-pointed Progressive Congress Swiss Teams
Uack High) at the EBU Annual Congress played online in AugusL
I lookforward to meeting you all again soon.
Alan Wallace

**Secretary’s Report 2021**

- The membership stands at 139 members but there are a few subscriptions still outstanding.

- 7 to 10 trustees/committee members are needed. This includes three officers (see attached sheet).

- A massive thank you is to be extended to Alan Wallace for his efforts in directing the online Thursday bridge sesssions and Graham Cox for organising the online league.

- Thanks are also due to Rosemary Wallace for her efforts in balancing the club’s accounts.

- Teaching lessons continue on Tuesday and Friday mornings and I would encourage all members to advertise these as much as possible. Lessons bring in new members and are important for the continuing existence of the club.

- Thanks to Richard Spargo for his unceasing help with many repairs and in tending the garden. His continues to be an important and vital contribution.

- Christopher Patrick has helped enormously with many aspects of the club (eg. newsletter).

- I must not forget our long-serving committee member, Eleanor Foley, who still helps with various jobs around the club.

- Most competitions have been cancelled due to the closure of the club during the coronavirus pandemic. However the Bergson trophy was played online.

- The club has had a new boiler installed and hopefully will be in use once the club reopens.

- The club will be opened as soon as it is safe to do so and government guidelines must be followed. Members will be informed in advance via e-mail or letter about possible opening dates.

Allan Davies.
