We have welcomed new members from Bere Forest
Canoe Club - Water Polo team – who are now having a
years trial with us too.|
**Sports Development - The Weights Gym –** The DIV 1 to 6 Marathon and Sprint members of the Club continue to make good use of this facility– supported by our in-house fitness Coach.
**Circuits and Ergos –** Tuesday and Thursday evenings continue to be well attended.
**Coaches –** We continue to develop younger adults as new coaches.
## **Coaching sessions -**
Our Saturday sessions remain our’ bread and butter’ with newcomers continuing to attend our monthly Tasters. We also have seen a re-surgence of new paddlers from other areas as new attendees arrive at Southampton University.
**Sprint –** The Sprint Team have built on successes last year and the group are developing well. To support the K4 sprint program a new trailer has been purchased with a grant.
**Marathon -** Our Hasler race event went well and we saw a greater return of other clubs to the event. **Welfare Officer –**
It has been a busy year for the Club Welfare Officer. She has reported that all the coaches DBS checks were complete, plus safeguarding training. All policies had been reviewed and are now on the website. The coach induction pack is now complete and the first coaches update session has been run. There is also a new Race Behaviours document which has been written this year. Finally, Spond is now being used to communicate with all under 18s following the British Gymnastics white paper. To this end we are advised that:All Coaches are compliant All Procedures and policies are up to date and visible on the website.
**Liaison with other Clubs in the Area** – We have continued to develop links with Poole Harbour Canoe Club, Hamble Canoe Club and Hamble Sea Scouts by organising local Hare and Hound race events, when possible to do so, which attract their membership to the sport of marathon kayak racing and equally promotes the presence of both their club and ours to all participants in so doing.
|||**Health and Safety**– A new parent volunteer took over
as Health and Safety officer in January.
It was reported this year that there had been
occurrences of increased levels of Ecoli in the River
Itchen. This was investigated further through speaking
to other clubs and liaising with the water board to
consider regular testing.
Paddling was deemed to be down to personal choice
and Club Members were actively encouraged to shower
immediately after paddling as usual.|

The main activities as described earlier are :-
1. We have offered 'Open to the community' FREE of
CHARGE Taster sessions
2. Provision of an Amateur Sport Development
programme supported by trained coaches for all ages
and abilities, has remained key for all those able to take
part in sessions.
3. We continue to develop new events and are looking
to organise a more local sprint regatta – this is still in
planning
4. Continuing to develop links with other clubs to offer
an outlet for the development of kayaking together with
their own activities.
All the above activities benefit all ages and abilities in
developing their self confidence and social skills, whilst
maintaining their health and mental well-being by
actively participating in a sports activity with other like-
minded participants.|

extend to maintaining our fleet of kayaks,
paddles and buoyancy aids which are used by

Although membership tends to fluctuate year
on year the volunteers continue to develop
new ideas and coaching methods which has
meant that we have been able to again extend
our membership to 100 in this last year.
We have also been able to maintain interest in
training through the winter evenings by
operating ERGO machine and Circuit Training
sessions twice a week which has been open to
all club members to attend free of charge as
part of their membership.
The development of a weight -training gym has
meant that members have been able to weight
train at our own site, and this continues to
develop.|

Nation at the Woodmill Activity centre site and
we are continuing to explore a way to have a
more permanent presence on site which we
can call our own - this remains in the early
development stage but still is an ongoing
project for the next few years.
The Service Level Agreement with Active
Nation will be coming up for renewal post 2025
and this will become an issue of greater
importance in the next year.
The main aims of the Club are to not only get
more people active but to develop those
people into talented athletes in the field of
kayaking.
In order to measure our achievement in this
area we are always keen to demonstrate this
by their singular achievements across the
year:-|
**Help to develop international paddlers – Long term aim** Continued success in this area with members of the club being selected for international races. **Sprint -** European Sprint U23 Championships One of our paddlers in the K4 500m reached the semi-final. **Marathon -** German National A 2[nd] place finisher in an U18 K2 with a team member from another club French Nationals A 2[nd] place finisher in an U16 K2 with a team member from Wey Canoe Club A 2[nd] place finisher in an U16 K2 with a team member from Richmond Canoe Club **Attendance at Hasler Finals 2022 -** We made the final at Runnymede on the River Thames. We finished in 14th place, but we could only take a small team. **Waterside Series 2022 –** A smaller number of club members took part in this Year’s series. Results from the overall series as follows: 1st Mixed K2 3rd Senior K1 4[th] Senior K2 getting ready for DW. **Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race 2022 –** A mixed age team completed the course and came 8th in a time of 18hrs 39.41minutes **Sprint Races Results –** Our faster paddler is now doing sub 1min:50 secs for 500m and sub 3mins:50secs for 1000m and making Men A F1 & racing in the ORS. Here are some highlights from this year: National Championships O44 500m K2 - 2nd U23 200m K1 - 3rd U16 500m K4 - 1st U18 200m K2 - 2nd Other highlights University Games U23 200m K1 - 3rd Girls B Mini Sprint - 2nd
Intermediate 1st series winner 7th MacGregor Inter Club Regatta one, promotion to Boy C and then Boys B. One promotion to Boys A **National Marathon Championships 2022 -** Results of note - U16 K1– 1[st] U16 K2 – 2[nd] O54 K2 – 2[nd] **Talent and Sprint Report -** All across 2022 into 2023, we have been working to provide a quality talent development and training programme for our groups of athletes. Our small team of coaches are currently delivering 6 sessions a week, with the paddlers doing up to 16 sessions a week depending on age and capacity. **Below you will find a list of the sporting achievements.** We have run a number of training camps during the School holidays and took a group of athletes to Portugal in the spring of 2023. All across the winter we have been supported by the British Canoeing Junior Talent Coach. She has provided a fantastic level of coaching delivering 2 sessions a week, and whilst not all of our paddlers are able to attend they have all benefited from the training opportunities that have been provided. We took our largest ever Sprint Team to the Macgregor Paddle Sprint Competition last September and as a club for the first time we finished in the top 10 Sprint Clubs in the country. Working with our Funding officer and Treasurer and with a grant from the Steve Bernard Foundation we now have a fantastic new trailer that will carry the club’s K4’s safely and securely. **Future Plans** Across 2023/24 we are planning to improve delivery through Coach training. We are planning to purchase a number of walkie talkies to improve coach to paddler communication during the sessions. Plus we hope to work with the club to purchase new trestles to promote the best practice of not putting your boats on the floor. We are also planning to run an entry level Sprint Regatta as part of the British Canoeing Sprint Committee initiative of Local regattas - this will need volunteers and paddlers.
We have submitted an application of our evidence towards achieving the British Canoeing Talent Champion Club and are awaiting feedback, this is linked to and dependent on the committee's work into the re-accreditation of our status as a Quality Club. **Athlete Achievements** ● One has been selected to represent the GB development Squad at the German National Championships ● One achieved a Bronze in 200m at the inaugural British University & College Sport Sprint Championships ● Great Britain Junior Talent Squad selections for three of our paddlers ● Junior Development Squad selection for three of our paddlers ● One achieved promotion to boys A ● One achieved promotion to boys B ● This year we have been joined by two elite Surf Livesaving Athletes, who have both raced domestically and internationally with fantastic results.

sterling efforts in this regard.
**Funding Aims for 2023**-
The coming year again could be trickier as grants available will be
focused on those suffering financial hardship due to the energy costs
crisis.
Our membership numbers are down so we will need to work hard at
recruiting and retaining members which will be our main source of
income, plus, as ususal, continue to spot funding opportunities for new
projects.|
