TRENT MEMORIAL HALL ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2025

Chairman’s report

The Chairman – Christopher Wilkinson - reported that 2025 was another good year for the Hall. The new solar panels have significantly reduced energy costs, partly through selling excess power to the grid. And we have continued to update the facilities and fabric of this important community asset. Examples from both last year and early this include redecorating the hall and meeting room, putting in wider doors to the storeroom (making it easier to get tables in and out), buying roving mikes and two outside tables and umbrellas. We will continue to invest in these facilities as our finances allow but we will also be prudent in case of unforeseen expenses.

Turning to social activities, we are very pleased that the hall hosts a series of regular groups and classes, including yoga, dog training and quilting groups, the Queen Thorne Garden Club and a weekly Post Office. We appreciate all these groups.

In addition, in 2025 we held:

• 8 Film Nights, with films chosen through a survey of 100 Club members

• 4 coffee mornings;

• a number of great events, including another delicious Syrian meal and the terrific Picnic in the Park; and

• a Christmas Drinks evening.

2025 also saw another Pancake Mardi Gras, much enjoyed by children from the school, a series of Spring Lunches in Lent and a Harvest Lunch. Thanks are due to everyone who worked so hard on our social activities, as well as to everyone who came and helped make the events such successes.

The biggest event of the year, in terms of the organisation required, is undoubtedly the annual village fete. 2025 saw our traditional village fete raise

nearly £4,000 for the hall and the church, a really important sum for both organisations. After ten years David and Janet Walden have decided to stand down from leading the organisation of the fete. I would like to thank both of them, on behalf of the Hall and the Church, for their efforts. We and the Church are therefore anxious to seek new leadership for the fete.

To help keep the hall viable we also value one-off hall hirings. Bookings in 2025 continued to be very positive, with a record 26 birthday parties – for both children and adults.

The accounts also show that the 100 Club lottery had another pretty good year, although there are a few vacant numbers. Can I therefore encourage you to join or rejoin the 100 Club for the next season starting this autumn.

Treasurer’s Report and the Hall Accounts for 2025

Can I thank Nicola Matthews for all her hard work as our Treasurer. She has done a great job in improving and modernising our accounts. Can I also thank Nick Dyer, our bookkeeper, and Max Snow, Treasurer of the Queen Thorne Benefice, who has kindly reviewed our accounts again this year. Our bookkeeper reported that “In my opinion, Nicola's bookkeeping has been to a very high standard.”

Max has indicated that he wishes to stand down from this examiner role after some ten years. We thank him for his work; we really appreciate his independent view.

The headlines from the accounts are that:

• Income from hall hire was a bit lower last year than in 2024 - £6,807 compared with £7,260 – but still represented a strong result, showing how popular the Hall has become.

• Our total assets stood at some £31,500 at the end of 2025, compared with just over £30,000 at the end of 2024. This is despite, in January 2025, paying

off £10,000 of our £25,000 loan from the Ernest Cook Trust. We are now paying off the rest each month for the next 4 ½ years.

Electon of the commitee for 2026/27

In the autumn Gene Stoddart resigned from the Parish Council and his replacement on the Committee is Councillor Sam Negus. Alistair Morgan has also now stood down from the Committee. I would like formally to thank both Alistair and Gene for their help and support to the Committee.

The following committee members are willing to stand again for the coming year. They are Chris Wilkinson, David Walden, Peter Phillips, Nicola Matthews, Ray Thomson, Wendy Phillips, Mike Herrmann and Christina Durnan-White. Sam Negus remains an ex officio member. Can I thank everyone on the current Committee for all their help and support.
