TRENT MEMORIAL HALL – ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2023

1. 2023 was a good year for the Hall but without the dramatic developments of recent years, such as pandemics and major building projects. It gave everyone a chance to enjoy the refurbished hall. In terms of social activities, we held:

2. 7 Film Nights, with films chosen through a survey of 100 Club members;

3. 4 coffee mornings; and

4. 6 Early Doors drinks evenings.

5. All of these activities provided a great way to catch up with friends as well as to meet new people. They also generate very welcome income for the hall.

6. In addition, 2023 saw a Pancake Mardi Gras, much enjoyed by children from Trent School, a series of Spring Lunches in Lent and a Harvest Lunch. The major events which were probably the highlight of last year were the Progressive Supper in February, the Turkish meal in May in aid of earthquake relief and the Quiz Night in November. There are too many people to thank individually but huge thanks to everyone who has contributed to our social activities over the year. Thanks as well to everyone who came to these events and helped make them the successes they were.

7. The great work has continued into this year, notably with the wonderful Syrian meal in February, enjoyed by nearly 50 people.

8. The biggest event of the year, in terms of the organisation required, is undoubtedly the annual village fete. 2023 saw much better weather than the previous year and our traditional village fete raised some £3,000 for the hall and the church, a really important sum for both organisations. The fete is always a great way of bringing people together to support the village.

6.. Financially, we rely on both the events already mentioned and hall hirings to keep the hall sustainable. Hirings in 2023 were up and we had a very successful year, with some 23 birthday parties – for both children and adults – as well as a wedding. Income from hall hire grew significantly between 2022 and 2023. This is most encouraging, reflecting the excellent facilities which we can now offer.

1. On the issue of facilities, we installed an induction loop hearing system to help those with hearing difficulties access films more easily and are well advanced in planning a storage shed. Another improvement we want to make is

to install a suspended ceiling in the meeting room, to reduce the ambient noise. Finally, our major current plan concerns the installation of solar panels on the roof, along with storage batteries to provide power at night and when the sun is not shining. As well as being a positive, green, step, this should help reduce further our energy costs at a time of continuing high prices.

1. The 100 Club lottery had another good year, with more members than in 2022.

2. On the Hall Accounts for 2023 , our new Treasurer, Nicola Matthews, explained that the headlines are that:

• Income from hall hire rose further in 2023, up to some £7,800, which was an increase of 26% over 2022. This is a very pleasing result. Getting close to that performance in 2024 would be very good.

• Our total assets stood at just under £29,000 at the end of 2023, compared with just under £23,000 at the end of 2022. This gives us the opportunity for some careful investments for the future, as mentioned earlier, whilst still maintaining a sensible reserve for unexpected events.

Election of the committee for 2024/25

1. During the last year Jen Barron and Neil Carpenter stepped down from the Committee. Grateful thanks to them both for their years of service. The following committee members are willing to stand again for the coming year. As well as Paul Harris, Chairman, they are David Walden, Peter Phillips, Nicola Matthews, Wendy Phillips, Mike Herrmann, Ray Thomson and Alistair Morgan. The Parish Council will also nominate a member in due course. Thanks to everyone on the current Committee for all their help and support.

Observations: There were no anomalies in the above checks. A professionally qualified and experienced book-keeper has prepared the financial statements. The Hall Committee should be reassured that the Trent Memorial Hall Accounts continue to be run in a professional and business-like manner.
