TRENT MEMORIAL HALL – ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2020
1. As a result of Covid-19, 2020 turned out to be a very different year from that which we had previously envisaged. We reported last time on the progress – both in terms of fundraising and building works - made since April 2019 with our project to extend and modernise the hall. Fitting out of the extension and improvements to the existing building took place during both 2019 and the early months of 2020. By the early summer of 2020 the Hall improvement
project was almost complete and the new building ready to welcome visitors. Unfortunately, of course, we were instead hugely frustrated by the Covid pandemic, which put a temporary stop to those ideas. Having focussed during the first three months of the year on finishing the building work, we then went into lockdown. This basically ended all social events and only allowed some small classes, covering yoga, quilting, etc, to take place when they were allowed later in the year.
2. Nevertheless, the Hall Committee would like to record their thanks and gratitude to a number of people who voluntarily gave up significant time during the year to ensure that the Hall was ready to be used. They are Ron Jones, Max Snow, Simon Crozier, Paul Dart, Ian Matthews, and David and Janet Walden.
3. As far as social activities were concerned, the Coffee Morning held on 22 February sadly turned out to be the only such event in 2020, with even the Annual Village Fete falling victim to Covid-19. Fortunately, the Government offered grants to village halls forced to close and, to date, we had received
some £13,800 from that source, via Dorset Council, in 2020 and 2021. This has been a vitally important source of funds at a time of closures and very limited income.
4. The 100 Club lottery had another good year, again being fairly fully subscribed. It had been a particularly important source of funds during this pandemic year.

5. Finally, the issue of a new playground had been raised at the 2020 AGM. In many ways this was the most exciting development of the latter part of 2020 and start of 2021. Following that AGM a small group drew up ideas and consulted widely on them, including villagers and both parents and children at the school. Jen Barron researched companies and secured quotes for the work and, as he had done for the Hall, David Walden started applying for grants, armed with many letters of support from across the people and organisations in Trent. Tina Harris and the Friends of Trent School were also very helpful here. By the time of the April AGM in 2021 we were able to report that, so far, we had raised around £36,000 in grants and donations, including nearly £25,000 from Viridor Credits.
The Hall Accounts for 2020
6. The Hall Chairman thanked the Treasurer, Jen Barron, for her excellent work in maintaining our accounts, assisted by bookkeeper, Nick Dyer. He also thanked Max Snow, Treasurer of the Queen Thorne Benefice, who has kindly reviewed our accounts once again this year and approved them. His observations are also available.
7. The headlines from the accounts are that:
• Income from hall hire and events, not surprisingly, was significantly down, even from 2019 when we had the building works going on. However, several classes of up to 6 people were held in the period of 2020 when they were allowed. This bodes well for the future.
• Our total assets stood at around £12,900 at the end of
- This is pretty good given the expenditure in the previous two years on the improvement project and gives us a reasonable cushion for the future.
Election of the committee for 2021/22
8. There had been a stable committee during 2020/21. The current committee were all willing to stand again for the coming year. As well as Paul Harris (Chairman), and David Walden (Secretary), they are Jen Barron (Treasurer), Peter Phillips, Nicola Harris, Wendy Phillips, Neil Carpenter, Marie
2
Negus, Mike Herrmann and Mike Hayton, representing the Parish Council. The Chairman thanked everyone on the current Committee for all their help and support, as well as Amelia Capewell, our ex-officio Bookings Secretary. No other candidates offered themselves for election. Accordingly those listed above were all reappointed.
