## Introduction
This annual report highlights news items from the year and gives us the opportunity to thank the many generous donors and supporters who have helped Hospice Ethiopia UK during 2021. As for so many people and charities, 2021 has been a particularly challenging year and we have had to constantly adapt to the changing regulations concerning COVID-19.
“Hospice Ethiopia UK” (HE UK, registered charity no 1171781) became a registered UK charity in February 2017. Our mission is ‘To promote the provision of palliative care in order to relieve the suffering of the terminally ill in Ethiopia by providing financial, educational and practical support.’ There were 6 Trustees during 2021: Sue Mumford (Chair), Marion Bryce (Treasurer), Wendy Smith (Secretary), Nick Garrard, Jamie Mumford, and Jan Benson. There were two associate trustees Helen Garrard and Rachel Austin. Nick Garrard has come to the end of his term of office and stood down at the end of 2021. We are enormously grateful for his hard work and commitment during the first 5 years of Hospice Ethiopia UK’s existence. The trustees work in close partnership with Ephrem Abathun, the Director of Hospice Ethiopia.
Hospice Ethiopia (HE) is an Ethiopian non-government organisation (NGO) in Addis Ababa which provides home based care for the terminally ill and provides palliative care education to a range of health care professionals in Ethiopia. It receives almost no funding from within the country. Ethiopia’s population is now estimated to be 117 million (the second most populous country in Africa) but access to health care is difficult. Consequently, symptom control for the terminally ill is extremely limited.
The trustees of HE UK held six regular meetings during the year when we reviewed our work to inform our planning for the future. Due to the pandemic most of our meetings were held online. Among the many decisions made, the trustees have agreed to reducing the use of plastic, for example our Christmas cards are no longer sold in plastic sleeves. Our AGM was held on March 11th; due to the pandemic this was via Zoom. We were delighted to welcome attendees from across the UK and abroad.
HE UK could not have achieved all that it has in 2021 without many hours of help from regular and one-off supporters who freely gave their time and expertise to raise funds for those desperately needing palliative care in Ethiopia. As a small charity we have very low costs; we do not employ anyone, rent offices or charge for our travel. This allows us to send almost all money raised to Ethiopia where it is so badly needed. Our thanks go to A J Cooper Builders for funding our administration costs. Thanks also must go to those supporters who have helped the trustees of HEUK with our website, social media, and publicity.
## Fundraising
Fundraising has again been a huge challenge in 2021 with COVID-19 restrictions and the unpredictability of the pandemic making planning difficult. However, our fundraising got off to a great start with an excellent online art lecture given by our trustee Nick Garrard about ‘Compassionate Art’, which raised over £800.
This was followed by another online event, an Ethiopian cooking evening, which introduced many of our UK supporters to some delicious Ethiopian dishes. This was organised in conjunction with other small charities working in Ethiopia; we form a group called ‘Small but Significant’ and meet regularly online to share information and support.

We were delighted that, with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, Steph Kershaw’s Open Garden (which had been postponed from 2020) was able to go ahead. Despite rather drizzly weather we were delighted that this event raised £1,700.

We welcomed a new supporter Mahlet Bejiga, from Boston, USA who gave an informative online talk about the work of Hospice Ethiopia. Events like this increase our donor audience internationally. Our long-time supporter Nina O’Brian and our trustee Jamie Mumford both completed separate sponsored runs to raise over £2,100 together.

Throughout the summer, planning for our big fundraiser of the year was going on. September 5[th] turned out to be a beautifully sunny day and the crowds flocked in to support Hospice Ethiopia at The Mannington Hall Charity Day. Over £9,000 was raised on the day; with the addition of Gift Aid on donations, the total raised was a magnificent £10,000. Our thanks go to several sponsors (Mervyn Ellis, Ivan Fisher Funeral Home, Purdy’s Garden Centre, Aldborough Farms, and A Wright & Sons Garage) who enabled us to keep our costs down for this event.
HE UK was accepted to take part again in The Big Give Christmas Challenge, a national fundraising campaign run annually at the beginning of December. Our ‘project’ was to raise £9,000 to fund the development of palliative care at St Paul’s Hospital in Addis Ababa. Staff at the Oncology and Emergency departments will be trained using the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) Training and Delegates manuals (developed with funding from The Big Give project 2020). To raise this amount, we needed our donors to give £4,500 which was then matched to raise £9,000 in total. In fact, our donors gave more and with Gift Aid the total raised was over £10,000. A fantastic result, which we could not have achieved without so many generous donors taking part.

Other fundraising events and sales have also contributed to a fantastic £60,983 being raised in 2021.
A special mention must go to our generous donors who give a monthly donation via a Standing Order. This really helps with our financial planning and ensures we have regular money to support the work of HE in these difficult times (Covid, political conflict and an inflation rate of 30%) which is hugely important. We wish to extend many thanks to all our supporters who gave their time to help with organising and running events as well as making generous donations. Without your help Hospice Ethiopia would not be able to continue its vital work.
## Education Fund
Nurse Kalkidan Eshetu completed her online ‘Initiators’ course run by Hospice Africa Uganda. She comments "I really enjoyed the online course. I thought it was well planned and laid out, easy for me to follow. The workload was just enough, so I could finish everything with enough time, learn about the topics and not feel overloaded and rushed. Overall, I really like this class because all lectures, assignments, and tests are straight forward. And it really helps my work as a palliative nurse."
Following a donation from Aylsham Rotary Club of £1,600 in 2020, Nurse Filagot Tadele has started her Diploma in Palliative Care with Nairobi Hospice. The remaining cost is being paid for by a generous donation from one of our supporters. Nurse Filagot says "This diploma education in palliative care means a lot to me; it helps me care for my patients with better knowledge and skill, it becomes a turning point in understanding palliative and hospice care much better, and it is a starting point for my future vision to develop my educational career."
## Reserves
The Trustees have agreed to allocate £15,000 to the Reserve Fund, which equates to six month’s funding of Hospice Ethiopia by HEUK as a general reserve for emergency funding for Hospice Ethiopia.
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in notes to the accounts and comply with the charity’s governing document, the Charities Act 2011, and the Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Small Entities, published July 2014.
## Transfer of funds
During 2021, £43,881 was transferred in two instalments to HE. £30,000 will go towards the running costs of HE. This included £4,500 from a restricted fund for the running costs of the Toyota Land Cruiser funded by the Diocese of Norwich in 2017 and £150 collected by donors in coin jars which is a restricted fund for the Comfort Fund; this money is used by HE to support their very poorest patients. Palliative care does not require many items of
equipment, therefore the money we transfer is rarely ring-fenced, allowing the Director and Accountant to spend the money as they think best for providing palliative care. Next year we again plan to transfer two payments, thus minimising bank transfer fees. However, with inflation running at approximately 30% and the value of the Ethiopian Birr dropping against pound Stirling (see graphs below), careful planning with Hospice Ethiopia will be needed as to the best time to transfer the funds.

The project to supply solar power panels to Abaroba Health Centre has continued to be held up due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The equipment has now arrived on site but, due to the political situation, experts have been unable to travel from the UK to supervise the installation. Helping to support a vital health centre in rural Ethiopia will enable Hospice Ethiopia to roll out palliative care to remote areas, where access to care is so difficult.
The budget for this project is on track.
## Trustee visit and The Big Give Project 2020
Jamie and Sue Mumford had hoped to visit Hospice Ethiopia in Addis Ababa in December 2021, but this has had to be postponed until 2022.
The money raised from our Big Give Christmas Challenge 2020 is being used to develop palliative care teaching in Ethiopia. We started our project early in January 2021 but have not been able to complete the project due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the difficult political situation in Ethiopia.
In January Ephrem Abathun (Director of Hospice Ethiopia) worked with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and other stakeholders to design a Palliative Care training manual and 6- day training course to be used across Ethiopia. Trustees from Palliative Care Works provided advice/support for Ephrem in designing accompanying course material. This has been formally approved by the FMOH. A Training manual and Delegates’ manual have been printed.
Jamie and Sue Mumford were to have helped deliver a pilot palliative care training course using the new manuals to the staff of the Simien Mountain Mobile Medical Service in Debark in December 2021. Sadly, this has been postponed due to the political situation and COVID-19 pandemic in Ethiopia. This is the first year since the charity was formed that trustees have not been able to visit in person. We very much hope that two trustees will be able to visit early in 2022.
## National and International Links
Jamie and Sue Mumford attended the Palliative Care Works (PCW) annual conference via Zoom. HE UK has worked closely with some of their trustees during 2021 devising the trainers’ and delegates’ manuals to be used during 6-day palliative care courses that can be delivered in any setting in Ethiopia.
Jamie and Sue Mumford attended the Hospice Africa annual conference by Zoom on 26th September. It was useful to keep in touch with the work of Hospice Africa, although we were sad not to be able to be there in person.
HE UK has also continued our link with another UK charity, Ethiopiaid, which has provided financial support to a range of projects in Ethiopia for more than 30 years and has recently made substantial donations to HE. With their support it is hoped that Hospice Ethiopia will expand its provision of palliative care to Jimma in Southern Ethiopia in 2022.
HE UK has maintained links with a group of small UK charities working in Ethiopia via three weekly Zoom meetings. Our group, called ‘Small but Significant’, enables mutual support and information sharing about Ethiopia, charity regulations and working with nongovernmental organisations.
Trustees have joined two international Zoom meetings which have been held with three pharmacists in Addis Ababa, who are working towards setting up a morphine production unit at The Black Lion Hospital. This will enormously improve access to this essential pain relief medicine for terminally ill people across Ethiopia.
The trustees of HE UK have continued holding international video calls with supporters of HE across the world, particularly Uganda, Sweden, and the USA.
**2021 has been another difficult year for our charity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we have adapted, refocused our efforts, and, due to the generosity of our many supporters, we have been able to continue to support the work of Hospice Ethiopia.**
