Introduction
This annual report highlights some news items from the year and gives us the opportunity to thank the many generous donors and supporters who have helped Hospice Ethiopia UK during 2020. As for so many people and charities, 2020 has been a very challenging year. We had spent the winter months of 2019/20 planning a variety of fundraising events which one by one had to be cancelled or postponed until 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, with help from the tech-savvy we have managed to hold some online events and even managed to hold a very successful cake stall before restrictions resumed in the autumn. It felt good to see many of our supporters face-to-face again.
“Hospice Ethiopia UK” (HE UK, registered charity no 1171781) became a registered UK charity in February 2017. Our mission is ‘To promote the provision of palliative care in order to relieve the suffering of the terminally ill in Ethiopia by providing financial, educational and practical support’. There are 6 Trustees: Sue Mumford (Chair), Marion Bryce (Treasurer), Wendy Smith (Secretary), Nick Garrard, Jamie Mumford, and Jan Benson. There are 2 associate trustees Helen Garrard and Rachel Austin. We work in close partnership with Ephrem Abathun, the Director of Hospice Ethiopia.
Hospice Ethiopia (HE) is an Ethiopian non-government organisation (NGO) in Addis Ababa which provides home based care for the terminally ill and provides palliative care education to a range of health care professionals in Ethiopia. It receives almost no funding from within the country. Ethiopia’s population is now estimated to be 109 million (the second most populous country in Africa) but access to health care is limited consequently symptom control for the terminally ill is extremely limited.
The trustees of HE UK held 6 regular meetings during the year when we reviewed our work to inform our planning for the future. Due to the pandemic we moved our meetings online, so that the last 4 meetings were held via Zoom; the advantage of this has been that Ephrem (director of HE in Ethiopia) has been able to join us for part of a meeting. Our AGM was held on March 5[th] 2020 and we also had a strategic planning afternoon in October. As part of our strategy plan for 2020-2021 we are very grateful to Matt Roberts for updating and refreshing our website www.hospiceethiopia.org.uk
HE UK could not have achieved all that it has in 2020 without many hours of help from regular supporters who freely gave their time and expertise to raise funds for those desperately needing palliative care in Ethiopia. As a small charity we have very low costs; we

do not employ anyone, rent offices or charge for our travel. This allows us to send almost all money raised to Ethiopia where it is so badly needed. Our thanks go to A J Cooper Builders for funding our administration costs.
Fund Raising
We wish to extend many thanks to all our donors and those who give their time to help with running our charity. We held our first online fundraiser in April when we joined the national 2.6 challenge which was established to help charities who had cancelled events due to the UK Coronavirus lockdown. HE UK co-ordinated 26 brave volunteers who allowed their lockdown comrades to cut their hair with pre- and post-photographic evidence of their endeavours. An amazing £2,155 was raised.
HE UK was accepted to take part again in a national fundraising campaign at the beginning of December organised by The Big Give Christmas Challenge. Our ‘project’ was to raise £8,000 to fund the development of 3- and 5-day palliative care courses that can be delivered

in any setting in Ethiopia. With approval for the courses from the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), this will be a good step forward in increasing palliative care skills across the country. To raise this amount, we needed our donors to give £4,000 which was then matched to raise £8,000. In fact, our 42 donors gave more and with Gift Aid the total raised was over £9,000. A fantastic result, which we could not have achieved without so many generous donors taking part.
Education Fund
We are grateful to Aylsham Rotary Club for their donation of £1,600 which will go towards the cost of Nurse Filagot undertaking her palliative care diploma. The remaining cost will be paid for by a generous donation from one of our supporters. We’re hoping that she will be able to start later in 2021. Nurse Kalkidan will be undertaking an online ‘Initiators’ course run by Hospice Africa Uganda, also in 2021.
Reserves
The Trustees have agreed to allocate 15% of the previous year’s monies raised as a general reserve for emergency funding for Hospice Ethiopia.
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in notes to the accounts and comply with the charity’s governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and Accounts and reporting by Charities: Statement of recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Small Entities published July 2014.
Transfer of funds
During 2020, £34,600 has been transferred in two instalments to HE. £4,500 of this is from a restricted fund for the running costs of the Toyota Land Cruiser funded by the Diocese of Norwich in 2017. £230 was collected by donors in coin jars and is a restricted fund for the Comfort Fund; this money is used by HE to support their very poorest patients. Palliative care does not require many items of equipment therefore the money we transfer is rarely ring-fenced, allowing the Director and Accountant to spend the money as they think best for providing palliative care. Next year we will again transfer two payments.
We were also delighted to partner with Catherine Royce and fund solar power panels to Abaroba Health Centre. Unfortunately, this project has been held up by the Coronavirus pandemic but we hope that it will be completed in 2021. Helping to support a vital health centre in rural Ethiopia will enable Hospice Ethiopia to roll out palliative care to remote areas, where access to care is so difficult.

Trustee visit
Sue Mumford and Marion Bryce visited Ethiopia in February 2020 to visit Hospice Ethiopia in Addis Ababa and assist with delivering a 3-day Palliative care training course in Bahir Dar. They received a warm welcome and it is was a good opportunity to share in the successes and challenges of HE, especially for Marion who had last visited in 2012. We were able to see HE’s accounts and ensure that the money transferred to Hospice Ethiopia was being wisely spent so that donors can have continued confidence that their donations provide essential palliative care in Ethiopia. As always it was inspiring to see the work of the nurses of Hospice Ethiopia, knowing that without the funds raised by HE UK, their care would be much more limited.
Sue & Marion were also able to deliver a number of small items donated in the UK for patients of Hospice Ethiopia, for example colostomy bags (otherwise unobtainable for HE’s colostomy patients).
It was exciting to see first-hand the establishment of Hospice Ethiopia Bahir Dar. Bahir Dar is the capital of the Amhara region, 555 km north west of Addis Ababa and is situated on the huge inland lake: Lake Tana (source of the Blue Nile). It takes an hour to fly there from Addis Ababa but for most Ethiopians it would take considerably longer by road to get there. It is the third biggest city in Ethiopia after Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa and has a population of about 800,000.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between HE in Addis Ababa and the Tibebe Ghion hospital in Bahir Dar to set up the new palliative care service. This a new government hospital with a medical school attached.

Sue and Marion joined Director Ephrem, Doctor Yoseph Mamo, Clinical Nurse Yohanna and a young British Psychologist, Rose Curl to deliver the palliative care course. A representative from the FMOH attended some of the training on the first day. The Medical Director and Director of Nursing of the Tibebe Ghion Hospital also visited the course and added their support.
2 qualified doctors and 22 qualified nurses, including Nurse Filagot (HE Addis Ababa) and Nurse Ashenafi (HE Bahir Dar) attended. It was a busy schedule with many of the delegates having had no palliative care training previously. Pre- and post-course tests were carried out which showed a marked improvement in palliative care knowledge at the end of the course. Feedback forms were also completed that demonstrated the delegates truly appreciated the opportunity to gain some palliative care knowledge.
A proposed visit to Bahir Dar in November 2020 by Sue & Jamie Mumford to follow up this teaching has had to be postponed to 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
National and International Links
Jamie Mumford attended the Palliative Care Works (PCW) annual conference via Zoom. Following the success of The Big Give Christmas challenge HE UK will be working closely with trustees of PCW to devise 3- and 5-day palliative care courses that can be delivered in any setting in Ethiopia.

Jan Benson attended the Hospice Africa annual conference by Zoom on 27 September. Hospice Africa gives a small donation each year to HE. A new Board is in place being run, temporarily, by Anne Merriman’s nephew, and seems to be taking a new approach to website, fundraising and attracting a younger following.
HE UK has also continued our link with another UK charity, Ethiopiaid, which has provided financial support to a range of projects in Ethiopia for more than 30 years and has recently made substantial donations to HE.
HE UK has maintained links with a group of small UK charities working in Ethiopia via 3 weekly Zoom meetings. Our group, called Small but Significant, enables mutual support and information sharing about Ethiopia, charity regulations and working with non-governmental organisations.
The trustees of HE UK have also continued to have international skype calls with supporters of HE across the world in particular Uganda, Sweden and USA. A fundraising golf tournament that was planned in Las Vagas in 2020, organised by Stephanie Council, an American supporter, had to be cancelled. We hope this will be re scheduled once the pandemic is over.
2020 has been a difficult year for our charity in so many ways. However, we have adapted, refocused our efforts and due to the generosity of our many supporters we have be able to continue to support the work of Hospice Ethiopia.
