2024 was a quiet year for Holsworthy Day Companions with the cost of living impacting the extra activities we could supply and the clients who could attend. Since access to the Ring & Ride bus was withdrawn by DCC / SS in 2017, clients have found it increasing hard to come into Holsworthy as there is now no regular, suitable transport available, the cost of a taxi from outlying villages is, for many, prohibitive and many are reliant on family members to bring them in, which is not always possible.

Clients attending are still between 7 to 9 every Wednesday and it is disappointing that more people do not make use of our service. We still try to supply the same service as always, taking them out to Christmas dinner etc. This year we went to the Golf Club and I wish to compliment the staff with the way they were so very helpful to my less able members. We also put on ‘special’ lunches throughout the year. The usual soup and a roll was replaced many times during the year with fish and chips, much enjoyed, by the members and at their request, eaten straight out of the paper! I am sure they would like fish & chips every week if I let them!! The Folk group from Bude came and entertained us a couple of times. They give us a lovely afternoon but although we advertised for outsiders to join us free of charge, as usual, it’s only our members who enjoyed them. Pre Covid, we would have had a room full. One of our Volunteers does Karaoke once a month with an option for those that don’t like singing, to play games instead. Everyone wishes we could have as many trips out as we used to do pre Covid. Unfortunately, I need to fill a coach to make the trip financially viable and trips out etc are dependent on ‘outsiders’ joining us to help with the costs. We used to have lots of locals pre Covid come on our outings, but they have not joined us since.

Our fees have stayed at £5. We are all volunteers, so no wages to pay, and the increasing numbers of clients does now cover the hall rent but not the other unavoidable expenses which are currently being covered by pre Covid fundraising. We knew this would happen and hoped to attract someone to help with a grant application but that hasn’t happened yet.

The fall out from Covid continues to have an impact on us, not only with client members but also with committee and volunteer numbers.

It is clear that the transport .. a mini bus with escort .. that we had the use of for many years and was withdrawn from us by Social Services in 2017 together with the lack of referrals from them and the Covid reluctance, is having a very detrimental effect on the numbers attending..
