Governing document: Constitution as approved at the first AGM 7 February 2019 and amended at the AGM 4 February 2020

The charity is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)

Trustees are recruited by personal contact of existing Trustees and elected by the members of the Society at the AGM in accordance with the constitution.

The object of the charity is to educate the public in the history of Newhaven and the surrounding area.

The Society’s was fully active during 2024. The object was achieved by opening the Newhaven Museum located at Paradise Park, Newhaven from April to October; holding 5 lectures on local history open to both members and the public; maintaining a website focused on the Society’s activities and the history of Newhaven; working with local artists and others in support of projects related to the history of Newhaven; hosting a local artist for the Lewes District Council supported ArtWave festival; taking part in Heritage Open Days and responding to numerous enquiries about local history, from members of the public. Arts Council for Heritage Lottery funding was used for: a consultation to make the museum more engaging, accessible and relevant; a collection review and enhanced interpretation; an inclusive space where people and artists can participate; a new website to make it more accessible and rebranding to present a professional image. The trustees also committed £5,000 of the Society’s funds to this project. The funded project will continue through 2025. The trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit throughout. A project to catalogue, conserve and protect artefacts, documents and photographs in the museum was begun by volunteers and will continue for some time..

The charity is entirely run by volunteers as trustees and stewards at the museum.

The charity’s principal sources of funds are members subscriptions, museum and lecture admission fees, sales of books etc and donations from individuals and local organisations.

The trustees declare that they approved the trustees’ report above.

Signed on behalf of the Trustees

Graham Amy (chair)

Treasurerfs Report- Financial Year 2024
From a financial perspective 2024 proved to be a successful year. The society was able to provide a full
programme of tasks, including support for 'Blazing Saddles, at the Hillcrest Centre, the Newhaven Museum
opened early in April closing at the end of Ortober for the winter period and the society was represented
at the Denton Challenge and the RNLI fete. These activities including the sale of the Newhaven fimes
generated a profit for the year.
Income from museum admissions and sales, Hillcrest talks and a small profit from the sale of the
Newhaven Times have helped to offset the cost of continuing museum maintenance and refurbishment
and the expensive and time-consuming museum artifact preservation work which is ongoing.
In general, 2024 proved financially to better 2023. Membership to the society and subscriptions to the
Newhaven Times both increased, museum admissions and sales increased (see Curators report) and we
received considerably more interest from our bank HSBC (see attached accounts). Expenses were lower
than 2023, this was due in part to less spend on the museum artefacts preservation.
We spent 3,525.12 from the National Lottery grant in 2024. there will be a far greater spend in 2025 as
work increases in the museum and purchases are made as part of the renovation of the museum.
Current Flnanclal Posltlon General Fund: (Financial accountsfor year attached)
The Newhaven Historical Society accounts for 2024 has been signed off by our examiner.
Excess of income over expenditure for the financial year was 5,725.88.
As stated, spend on the preservation of the museum artefacts was down on the previous year. It
should be noted that this is a long-term project which will require further investment in the future.
The society is still subject to bank charges, which are offset favourably by the increase in the
interest rate we received on our deposit account. Of course, interest rates fall as well as rise so this
may not remain in our favour in the future.
Extraordlnary Expenses:
These include the purchase of two wreaths laid by the society in memory of the Dieppe raid and
Remembrance Day. There was also a small cost forthe D-Day memorial event at the museum.
c)
Newhaven Tlmes:
Revenue from the sale of our journal the Newhaven Times, after printing costs, was 352.87. This is
partly due to Dees News selling the journal on our behalf.
Speclal mentlon:
A thank you to Dees News for their continued support in selling the Newhaven Times.
Special thanks to Bryan Berry for his donation of £500.
Thank you to the Vietnamese Embassy for the donation of £500 to help with decorating.
Many thanks to our Accounts Examiner, Mr Tony Richardson, who again completed the
examination of the society's accounts.
Stefan Storoszko- Honorary Treasurer Newhaven Historical Society.
