||Summary of the main<br>achievements of the charity,<br>identifying the difference the<br>charity’s work has made to<br>the circumstances of its<br>beneficiaries and any wider<br>benefits to society as a<br>whole.<br>Para 1.20<br>In delivering the Aphasia New Music Group,<br>the charity pioneers the use of songwriting<br>and music making as a tool for creative<br>expression for communication disabled<br>adults, as well as exploring its potential for<br>integration into speech and language<br>therapy. The charity achieves this through<br>strong links with the UCL Communication<br>Clinic.<br>The Aphasia New Music Group unites<br>people with aphasia (PWA), professional<br>musicians, and speech and language<br>therapists (SLTs). Unlike other music<br>projects, which typically involve singing<br>familiar songs or commissioning composers<br>to write on behalf of PWA, the project<br>exclusively focuses on the co-creation of<br>new music. Facilitators support individuals<br>to write lyrics, compose, use their voices<br>and play instruments, always led by the<br>interests and experiences of group<br>members. All activity is co-designed with<br>PWA, and supported by qualified SLTs.<br>When a person’s access to language<br>changes, music can offer a vital form of self-<br>expression, social cohesion and<br>empowerment. In addition, writing music<br>from scratch requires a great deal of<br>communication and collaboration, offering a<br>range of additional benefits which integrate<br>well with PWAs’ ongoing therapy in clinical<br>settings. Beneficiaries also include family<br>and friends, who see loved ones in a new<br>light; audiences, who learn about aphasia;<br>and artists, who develop new skills in<br>collaborating with PWA.<br>The charity’s partnership with the UCL<br>Communication Clinic enabled us to secure<br>funding from the UCL Co-Production<br>Collective, with which we co-produced an<br>accessible evaluation tool with PWA. This<br>allows us to assess the efficacy of our work<br>against criteria which matter most to our<br>participants.<br>In the period, the charity also co-produced a<br>professional music theatre production with<br>the Barbican. Presented at the Barbican in<br>October-November 2024,_Quiet Songs_was<br>the winner of the Oxford Samuel Beckett<br>Theatre Trust Award and starred Oscar-<br>nominated Ruth Negga. The production was<br>shortlisted for the Stage Awards in the<br>Innovation category, before transferring to<br>Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg for<br>two performances in June 2025.|

I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31 July 2025, which are set out on pages 2 to 8. 

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner** 

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. 

It is my responsibility to:- 

- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act. 

- to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act. 

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

## **Basis of independent examiner’s report** 

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosure in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to the matters set out in the next statement.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** 

## **Accounting convention** 

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (effective April 2008), the Charities Act 2011 and the requirements of the Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting Charities. 

## **Incoming resources** 

All incoming resources are included on the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity is legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. 

## **Resources expended** 

Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under the headings that aggregate all the cost relating to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings, they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. 

## **Taxation** 

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Fund accounting** 

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. 

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
